The Update Thread

Sorry if that has already been answered...

Is there a way to order an Epic-W with a 6k Dragon sensor?
Is there a way to swap out the S35 Dragon for a FF Dragon in the future?

Thanks
Pat

Paid sensor swapping (Helium to Dragon and Dragon to Helium) done AT RED will be possible with the Epic-W, but it will start life as an 8K Helium. If you want a Dragon 6K NOW, you'd just have to get a higher end Weapon. The Weapon Mg is going away...

Sounds like the wait time from the Dragon sensor production line makes getting a Dragon sensor in the Epic-W not possible for the near future.

I was pretty sure the Epic-w was not for me, but as the day draws near, and as I think about drunken financing, I'm seriously contemplating getting an e-w just to rent out. I think I could easily pay it off within a year on sharegrid.... someone talk me out of it!!!

That's what motivated me to tell my reply that I'd go for it. Rentals alone should be enough to recoup the cost of the camera in a year, but I was also thinking about my Himalayas trip next fall...

While I won't be upgrading, it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement of this thread. So excited for everyone moving up. Looking forward to the craziness on the 11th. I'll have my eye out for some of your DSMC1 accessories on the marketplace when you decide to put them up for sale.
Anything in particular you're looking for?
I have quite some in need to get out there for sale:

hey guys i keep losing track of this thread...can anyone confirm how the VV deposit holders take the helium sensor instead deal works? or is there a sign up? one of my reds has a VV deposit so ideally i figured it could just be a helium sensor for now, particularly if VV guys get any sort of priority on it? Thanks!
Us "VV NAB15 guys" are in the following scenario: "Don't call us, we'll call you"...
Your rep will contact you once it's your turn in the VV-queue.
They will do the same for the generous Helium Loaner program, easing our endless waiting time for VV.
The "VV Helium Loaners" will have priority over the other Helium-sales so, my guess is: keep your phone close to you and fully charged tomorrow ;-)

EDIT: I interpreted something wrong down the line as VV-Depositors are not in front of the line for the Helium sensor-swap. My bad, sorry folks...

There is no "sign up", no "reservation", no... whatever for the "Helium Loaner program".

BTW: Thank you JARRED for having created this intermediate solution. It does ease the "pain" :-) Let's hope RED tackles the production hurdles on this difficult VV sensor soon so the lines can throttle up to cruising speed :-))

Trying to decipher this massive thread and if someone could clarify for me that would be awesome.

I own a Epic MX, upgraded from a red one bought in 2008. On the 11th will there be an upgrade path for me to some new sensor/ body? If so what?... and what sort of price am I looking at?

Thanks Cinema Friends!

Dear Jarred Land,

converted to Scarlet W IO package in Dec 2015 from Raven deposit, mine is an Educational Account. Now looking forward to Epic W upgrade path, curious over the educational pricing. any good news for me? Thank you.

I mean come on guy... its a once in a lifetime ten thousand dollar discount and you're literally asking for even more of a discount. This question is almost as bad as the "unfair, left behind" comments. Please use a little better judgement.

Everybody who wants to trade-in to Epic-W is going to be kicking themselves for not taking advantage of the $20K Epic-W deal in the next 2 days.

D-Day (or H-Day) is fast approaching and I think I finally made up my mind - looking for any thoughts or something I'm over looking. It seems like shooting Epic-W 8K at 14:1 is fine for compressing to 4K or 2K delivery. At 14:1 at 8K is 326GB. 80% of what I shoot I can do with 2K ProRes 4444 - I'm used to Arri. When I want to shoot RAW, I could easily shoot 6K or 7k raw.

For ProRes, I could shoot 120GB Mags all day, however for renting I can't count of that. For the 275mb/s for lowest compression, I'd need 512GB mags. I will be taking part of the "drunken financing" so I can go with 2x 512GBs for now.

There have been shoots where I could have used a camera, instead we had to rent. If I order the Epic-W quickly on release day, I'm sure I can get it much quicker than I could get my Scarlet-W.

As for computing power, I'm a DIT so I already have a MacPro and always keeping up with that tech.

Any thoughts, or anything I'm overlooking? Thanks!!

I think that's not so nice to say.

For me and others here it feels as cheating to order trough the loophole.
I bought RED because I could upgrade, when I get that chance I will do that.
So feel free to order trough the loophole.
For me it doesn't feel right.

Hi Ash,

Thanks for that, what page on this thread is that stated (curious for my own reference)

Also what are the specs of Epic - W? Is it helium or dragon?

Cheers

Since this thread has transformed over the weeks from amazement, to wonder, to inquisitiveness, to a 1-800-Flowers commercial full of "bromance", to journalistic reporting, to "funeralesque" reminiscing, and now to ultimatums, I thought I would throw in my two cents in case it helps at all.

I am a former Scarlet-W owner. Yes, former. I was among the early ones to receive the camera. In fact, it was the first Red I owned. I loved it. It felt like an actual extension of myself. A "real camera", with the power to push the boundaries. Then I fell into a big post-production crush in my schedule. That meant more time in the office, less out in the field. So, I thought I would make a "good economical decision" and sell the Scarlet-W and pick up something capable, but maybe not quite as big an investment. I grabbed a BlackMagic URSA Mini 4.6k that came on the market.

Truth be told, the URSA 4.6 can make some nice, creamy images. And, truth be told, the clients liked the imagery coming out of it. It records to ProRes in 4K, up to 60fps. And RAW. And it's cheaper. But boy... it's just not as satisfying. And the same can be said for any non-RED camera I've owned. I missed that feeling that this was a camera designed by an engineer who was also a cinematic craftsman. I missed a build quality that felt like the guy you'd want next to you in a bar fight, instead of the guy from the book club. I missed a menu structure that was robust and with real options. I missed the unique capability to take an organic beam of light, convert it into a bunch of 1's and 0's, and have it come out looking just as organic. And I also missed the community and support that you find right here in RedUser - big time.

So, to keep it short... I've now paid the price of my mistake - going from first in line with a Scarlet-W in my hands, now to the back of the line with no camera. That pretty much sucks. But whatever the wait, it's going to feel good in a couple of days to try and get in line for the Epic-W. And I sure as heck am going to hold on to that sucker this time! Carpe diem!

Jarred and Brent are well aware that people would do that and they could easily have said "$20K if you have ALREADY ordered" but they said "$20K if you order before Oct 11th."
That is not cheating. That is a temporary discount.

I'm unlikely to do it, because of the added cost that I don't want right now, but it's a great deal that I can't fault somebody for taking.

I can't blame someone either, for me it's just a simple thing. I have a MX and I like to upgrade that.
I missed the dragon, my fault. Now I get a new chance to follow the path and I like to do that.
Some will say it doesn't make sense, you can have 2 camera's for the same price.
I just want to follow the "obsolescence obsolete" path. And hopefully helping RED by sending them my old camera. I hope it will be used for something cool.

!

If this thread doesn't become a Lifetime Movie of the Week or a Netflix Docudrama I'll be very disappointed.

And welcome back Kevin :)

That's cool. I understand your perspective.
