  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Welcome to the family Jim. you are in an unique position so just let your rep know which way you would like to go as soon as you can. your rep is prepared to make that process easy for you either way.

Jarred, how do you do this? Keeping up with the thread, having time to sup the R&D, marketing, meeting with board etc, even GDU, and still shoot, have time for friends, and family? do you sleep at all? Thanks for doing all this

I know right!! I think the new product that RED Leader, Jim Jannard has been working on has been perfecting Cloning. I don't think I met the real Jarred. It may have been his counter part! Hmmmmmmm...?

:'-D Good one! That explains it all! hahaha

Can the new USB-C MiniMag Reader be powered from a notebook from USB?

Yes... One of the great things about USB-C.. It has a very healthy power supply. No more wall warts for USB devices.

Can't manage going through this thread....

Can someone please tell me how the data file size (not internal processing) compares between a Weapon Dragon (6K FF 6:1 compression) and a Weapon Helium (8K FF 6:1 compression)? Let's say for 1 minute of footage. What's the percentage increase in data storage requirement?

I'm trying to determine what my post workflow is going to look like if I upgrade. Can the latest version of DaVinci Resolve running on a linux box with Titan Blacks process Helium 8K R3D's in real time with 4-5 nodes? Or will it choke?

My guess is that we'll need to rely on ProRes proxies for most jobs and use the ProRes 2K output for lower end, HD end deliveries.

Any practical, useful information from those with Heliums welcome.

Thanks!
Mark

8K FF is 8192 x 4320 pixels. 6K FF is 6144 × 3160 pixels. Since redcode compression ratios are based off of raw, file size will scale directly with resolution. ((8192 x 4320)/(6144 × 3160) -1) * 100 = 82.3% larger.

According to Red's Recording Time Tool 6K FF at 6:1 and 24 FPS will be 119 MB/s or 7.14 GB/min.

There's two things going on here Mark. One is just the pure data, which is what you're dealing with for transfers, copies, offloading, etc....

The other thing is the Data Rate and how it relates to various software packages.

So first open this:
Weapon 8K Helium S35
http://phfx.com/tools/REDCamAssist/REDCamAssist.cgi?camera=REDWeapon8KHeliumS35&resolution=8K&format=FF&ana=none&fps=24&HDRx=no

and this:
Weapon 6K Dragon S35
http://phfx.com/tools/REDCamAssist/REDCamAssist.cgi?camera=REDWeapon6KCFDragon&resolution=6K&format=FF&ana=none&fps=24&HDRx=no

Into two tabs. You can compare the REDCODE RAW Data Rates there.

There is some additional chaos however and that comes in the form of what software you are using and how it utilizes things like GPU RAM. When a full debayer occurs on say a full 8K frame, it is very ideal to have more RAM within your GPU. It will also depend a bit on your system setup in other areas, like your processor and how it's utilized by the software as well.

I've been working from the road with 8K .R3Ds for a while with a dual 8GB GPU setup and bigger at home. Resolve works but it also depends on how you want Resolve to work for instance. Are you looking for 1:1 debayer/resolution during playback or say 1/4 (4K). That's where you'll need to figure out how the workflow is for you.

Thanks Phil!

Do you think in 8K WS a 6GB GPU would be enough with 2-3 nodes of Resolve?

Wait so it is a USB-C connector? I thought it was type A with 3.1 implementation. That's is sweet! So we're talking 3.1 gen 2 - 10 Gbit/s?

It's a USB Type-C port on the rear of the RED Station. Type-C is typically USB 3.1 w/ power, but it doesn't need to be. This thing is however. And it sounds like Jarred is saying there's a Type-C to Type-A adapter cable in the box to work with USB 3.0 or whatever.

USB 3.1 protocol allows for up to 10Gb/s (or simply 1.25GB/s). This is faster than what current generation MINI-MAGs support, but you will indeed see a notable speed increase during offloads.

Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 ports are going to be and often are also USB-C friendly. Thunderbolt 3 supports up to 40Gb/s (5GB/s) and that's why Jarred thinks a TB3 USB Type-C hub would be a rather sexy thing to offload multiple mags, similar to what I showed in the picture I posted with 3 mag readers.

So I finally took delivery of my Raven five weeks ago, the day before flying off on a five week European vacation (not that I'm asking you to feel sorry for me!) Home in a few days' time, so I can finally see what my baby can do!

I haven't shot a frame with my Raven yet, but is my best option to offload it and make a Scarlet-W deposit if I aim to take advantage of this generous upgrade to Epic-W path, or do I have other options?

Epic MX will do 100fps at 5k, I do it all the time. Actually I shoot 95.9fps which is 4x 23.98, but that is pretty close. Unless 6k/5k is important to you Epic-W does not look like that much of a step forward in frame rate.

Did you mean it does 100fps at 5k or just close. 96fps it have ben able to shoot since its release.

Phil, I don't post that often but am on the forum daily. Thanks for those charts and so many others! They have been extremely helpful - seems like you have been crazy busy lately and still contribute over the forum & constantly have updated charts. Thank you!
