RE: Sending in Scarlet Dragon for Epic-W upgrade:

No - not only was that explains and discussed later but it really would make no sense. Bear with me...

If you order a Scarlet-W before the 11th, you can wait in line (apparently a very loooooong line) and eventually take delivery of a Scarlet-W, (Side note, if you happen to be a Scarlet Dragon owner with your camera purchased prior to NAB 2015, you can order the package which gives you discount on accessories). Simple, right? Now, however, if the information looks good for Epic-W on the 11th, you can switch your Scarlet-W order to an Epic-W for an additional $10K (the price that has been thrown about). You keep your time stamp from your Scarlet-W order so, if you were early to that game you'll probably get your Epic-W fairly soon (depending on the 10/11 mad rush). If you decide not to switch to Epic-W but proceed with your Scarlet-W order, you also keep your timestamp but the Scarlet-W queue is likely to be shorter because of the Epic-W switchers. Per RED's plan, everybody is better off.

Now -where is the logic in having to send in a Scarlet Dragon in all of this? You'd get nothing more than the guy who just ordered Scarlet-W outright, correct? So, having to send in your old camera would simply be a penalty move on RED's part and just plain arbitrary and unfair. That is not how RED rolls so I am pretty sure from reading this thread that it is NOT what will happen.

My thoughts exactly--HOWEVER:

Trading in the camera, per Jarred's comment, makes total sense *after Oct 11* if you never placed an order on the Scarlet-W. Because in that scenario, a Scarlet-D owner ignored the upgrade path to Weapon and the upgrade path to Scarlet-W, and they are being offered a $10k discount on the Epic-W for trading in their camera. I think that makes sense and is fair. But if you were Scarlet-D owner who had placed a Scarlet-W order, I think it makes sense to honor the same discount given to non-owners (i.e. not trading in the camera)

Those that adopt the newest technology first will always be rewarded more in the end in the waiting game. That's how it's always panned out. Can't wait to upgrade the MG Weapon to Weapon Helium come Oct. 11th. :-)

Agree completely. After 10/11 all bets are off as to what is available to DSMC1 owners.

Remember - the advantage the long time Scarlet-W "waiters" are getting is that they well now get their camera very, very soon. Anyone coming into this now is at the back of the line.

Any post Oct. 11th upgrades from Scarlet Dragon to Scarlet-W will need to send it their cameras as trade-ins. That seems completely fair and reasonable when taken by itself.

If someone is looking for a different path that allows you to keep you Scarlet Dragon then they better place a Scarlet-W order OR Call their REP and ask them about switching their existing Scarlet Dragon -> Scarlet-W upgrade timestamp to just a plain old Scarlet-W order.

So here's the question (sure it's been answered a hundred times BUT 420 paged thread...):

If I were to purchase Scarlet-W tomorrow for $10k, can I still upgrade to Epic-W for another $10K on Oct 11th on Announcement Day?

Cheers!

Yes, as long as your order is in before the 11th.

Thanks Louis for the quick reply!

I think I'll go this route then & keep my Scarlet MX as it's still a great cam!

Just keep in mind that you will be at or near the end of what might still be a very long queue. All Scarlet-W time stamps flow through to Epic-W and those of us who are just ordering recently will be waiting awhile. And, of course, that's fair since many early Scarlet-W (and Raven) customers have been waiting many, many months for a camera.

Haha - this is getting to be like the gold rush. Or, the stock market just before the 1929 crash. Are we creating a "bubble" in RED cameras? I joke but it does beg the question of whether there will be an excess of REDs out there shooting. LOL

Haha I've wondered the same thing, or if a lot of people will buy them who can't afford it and flood the used market a few months down the road. But then again, RED has said that REDuser posters like us make up a very small percentage of RED owners.

I feel better already. ;-)

Yeah. I talked to two long time RED Shooters, who did not know anything about the hype.

I've said this before. but Red is like totally dominating. the fact that Raven and Scarlet-w are out there will make a lot more people aware of how to work with the cameras. makes for more informed crew and production staff to get everyone on the same page. pretty exciting

When did 30 fps trump 24 fps? That's video standards but professional cameras come with a 24 fps standard correct? Epic-W 8K 30 fps only?

Up here, it has always paid off to have the camera "everyone else have". At least in the broadcast world. You are more likely to be able to Bring along your own camera on a production if that's the camera
thd producers are used to.
I had a hard time with my Epic, but the Raven with its prores has been an easier sell. And as more DSMC2 cameras floats arou ethics will get even easier. That's why I want to get an Epic-W

no, 30fps max. You can chose any frame rate from 1 to 30.

Thanks Terry. I'm in no rush as I have two other REDs to shoot with whilst waiting so this is perfect for me.

I'm sure RED wouldn't offer the deal if delivering it was beyond them. They've matured into a great company (yet still fun with it) & the way they look after us redusers is unreal.

But also possibly a problem,
Today I had a producer over who shat on RED. Due to one dude that didn't have a clue how to shoot with it. That's a problem. At the invoice there need to be a link to this forum for people to read more about how to use these beast. Because if you don't treat them right they will eat you.
