The Update Thread

I mean, it always made sense to me that producers have too many things to worry about to learn the details on things like this, but the part I haven't really figured out is why then they're not leaving the camera decision to someone who does.

So many decisions, specially in our field, are made by persons with absolute no knowledge whatsoever of the craft. Specially Marketing types. It makes complete sense for Red going with the 8K, 6K, 4K separation. Even the sensor names of Dragon or Helium is confusing to them. The not so bad ones will ask about references or examples of films shot on each. The general ones will just say "The Red camera" . If you work in the Commercial field over here, the good thing is that they know what Red is. They know it means quality. They just don't know anything about MX, Dragon, Scarlet, Epic, Helium, etc.

35 MPX photos with super 35 sensor (APS-C) with 16bit color.

It's much better than Canon 5D MK4 still photography lol

Seriously, when it becomes 10k... it will kill the photography industry like nothing. I am already contacting my client about this news. No more DSLR. Just bring one Plasma light, I can get 30fps 8K raw images (Unfortunately, it will be a bit compressed lol, but why not!?)

This may be too big of a question to ask especially after all of todays excitement, but could somebody confirm (cough cough Jarred or Brent), that Helium is indeed better in low light than Dragon? I've been hearing from a few shooters this past week that Helium is clean up to 3200. Thanks in advance.

A lot of the bigger Producers don't have time to learn the details. Usually they will say to "rent a RED", or " EPIC " and more recently " Weapon " Or they will say 4K or 6K or 8K... kinda like they would of said 8mm or 16mm or 35mm. Dragon or Helium to them will be more like choosing a film stock, after they choose the path, and remember they pay you to know and to help them with that so we are trying to make it easier for everyone.

This is so true! And yeah, the film stock analogy is spot on. And as far as producers... the naming thing really has helped already. For example I own/op a Scarlet-W and people tell me "We want to shoot 4k" or they say "5k"....but they also want it to be "Weapon"
or they say it has to match the image of their "Dragon" or "Epic" they have access to.

This is when we get to have the talk about how the Scarlet-W is the same Dragon sensor... it just throttles out at 5k.

What I've also seen is that, in my limited experience, the Scarlet-W does not carry the same stigma that the original Scarlet had... whereas the original Scarlet came across to many as "inferior"... especially as compared to the Epic.
This is changing though... where now the Scarlet-W (being in the WEAPON family) is seen as just as solid of a choice for any acquisition 5k and below. This perception change is huge! That little "W" makes a world of difference!

Plus, I like it because S-W is my initials ;)

Looks significantly cleaner in lowlight, yes.

well, normally they are just relaying the specs, either from the network or the post producers.

Cannot double dip. But you have some creative thinking there..!

Addressed deposit questions many times…

If you are RAVEN deposit guy, same price as SCARLET-W deposit guy top get into EPIC-W. If you have a RAVEN, you are, obviously, paying more for an EPIC-W than a guy with a SCARLET-W….

Im not a Raven deposit guy. I would be a Epic mx deposit guy...
Yep, seen it once in this deep thread but I did not understand if were the same for epic mx as for epic dragon. There should really be a sticky with the important info. I shot a mail to the red bomb squad.

Don't want to sound like a party-pooper.

I know this Epic-W is all that and a bag of chips, I do, truly. And, even though it's going to be an incredible deal the RED team is offering me for my wait, and I am truly THANKFUL for that, I'm still heavily leaning on keeping in line for the Scarlet-W. It's just a better buy for me at this point in time and my career.

With that being said, are Scarlet-Ws being shipped out as we speak? Or have you guys stopped shipping any cameras and just been making a bunch, stocking up on the purge out the bay doors from RED to keep too much of a mess from the the Scarlet to Epic switchers?

If this is the case, I think that is most efficient, especially for you guys to have to deal with recently shipped out Scarlets that will be shipped back just to get the Epic.
From Jarred's pic of all the Epic-Ws getting made and lined up for the October 11th news, is there a similar picture of Scarlet-Ws getting stacked up as well to be purged out? So that both "switchers" and "stayers" of Scarlet-W orders get filled at a quicker pace?

Would love any light on this. I've been patiently waiting and will continue to be patient since putting my order in January 1st. Just want to know if us that will stay in the Scarlet-W camp will get our cams sooner.

Excited to see frame rate options on the epic-w, only concern for me with helium is high frame rate (I shoot a lot of action sports)... unless these new sensors don`t need to crop for over cranking... after reading the past 100 pages it seems like everything is on the table.

If your end game is WEAPON 6K CF, Terry, I would seriously look at the existing WEAPON 6K upgrade package.

Hmmmm.... But that's a $45K bump, isn't it? While the net into the new Epic-W will be on the order of $32K +/- ($12k for Scarlet-W pricing + around $20K upgrade)?? Do I have that wrong?

The Epic-W is supposed to be the equivalent of Weapon MG, and the Helium Weapon the equivalent of Weapon CF from my understanding, so when you go to CF or Weapon Helium your jumping past Epic-W in price. Hence that heftier price tag.

I guess there will be a lot of upgrade paths from October 11. I wonder if any upgrade path stays available after the New Year? For example Scarlet-W to Epic-W but or course It will cost more money?
