  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wow - glance away for just a minute and the whole world changes! For a variety of reasons related to personal activities and priorities, I haven't spent much time on RU lately. Looking back in, it appears the whole world of RED is upside down. I have looked back through 100 or so pages of this thread, jumping from RED Team post to RED Team post, but I am not sure it helps. :-( Maybe some kind REDuser could answer just a couple of simple questions... (or point me to answers)

1) I have a Scarlet Dragon (DSMC1) and my only real plan has been to eventually move into DSMC2 in the most attractive/affordable way possible. Looks like that pathway is closing. Yes? The question is: Can I still order a Scarlet-W package for the Scarlet Dragon owners discount price. Seems like it is still available in the RED store but there is a lot of discussion here... (If so, do I want to?)

2) Is the major change to the camera line "just" the introduction of the Epic-W? (And is there somewhere where specs are listed - our at least hinted at? Is it 8K? Is everything moving to 8K?)

3) Jarred has been talking about the October 11th announcement but I haven't come across his post with any info. What changes might I incur on 10/11 that will change my paths for my Scarlet Dragon? Will I lose something on the date? What might I gain by waiting for the announcement?

It's all so confusing. LOL

Sorta been reading it, but other may chime in... as I could be wrong

still get the discount and if you put down the deposit by the 11th of next month you can get an Upgrade to the Epic-W for $10,000... and from what what people say, the Epic-W will cost $30,000, so it's a pretty good deal... things about Jarred being great and others about owning a Weapon and transferring to Epic-W and not being fair.

Guess Epic-W is kinda badass and some like it better than the dragon sensor, some don't... long discussion on threads

other things like the naming conventions and why it's called the Epic-W...

I think thats kinda the idea. They're great at building hype and interest in their product and they don't have to go far to do it.

The product and end result really speaks for itself, and thats what i'm here for.

The nit picking, and everything else is generated from a hint or a tease. And it drives a ton of users on here bonkers and gets them hitting refresh all day for more. It clearly works. It has for years. I'm not saying its a model, but it's a smart one if it is!

all aboard the hype train Even though it feels like you're waiting on Scarlet-Ws... you are really already on the ride too guys. Lucky its a high speed bullet train. 8k here we come!

OK - so I am trying to be a responsible forum user and do some of my own homework. :-) And I'll throw my thinking out here in case someone else is in my boat...

Reviewing some more, it looks like I should probably put in a deposit for my special Scarlet-W package (available to Dragon owners) before 10/11. That means I could either (eventually) take delivery of a Scarlet-W which is DSMC2 and keeps me in the world of contemporary RED products. It would also seem to mean that I could choose - if I win the lottery - to move my reservation to Epic-W (forfeiting my accessories) some time between 10/11/16 and 12/31/16, for about $10K more. Does this seem right?

The only remaining question... there seems to be some indication that even Scarlet Dragon owners will have some new options after 10/11 so I guess I could sit tight and wait - but then I would lose the Scarlet-W purchase option. To me, the best option seems to be to put down the deposit on Scarlet-W and review the announcement on 10/11 for a possible alternative path.

The only question that doesn't seem to have an answer is probably one for Jarred/Brent: If I put in my Scarlet-W deposit, my current Scarlet Dragon will be considered "executed." Does that mean that I would be cut off from any new options that would otherwise be available to a Scarlet Dragon owner?

Whew -this gets intricate.

But thanks for listening... and for any clarifications.
 
Terry, put down the deposit. Its a win-win-situation for you. If you decide, that no options on 10/11 is good for you, you get your money back...
 
I don't see why you couldnt make the SW deposit and transfer that money for a SD upgrade if you choose that. the thing to remember is that SW orders placed today are in a long long line. Jarred HAS said that the cluster of original dsmc cameras will be getting "pole position" in the helium upgrade process.

long story short, it can't hurt Terry.

Edit: it may be a good idea to go over your plans with your rep. One thing that gets annoying is someone who wants t change their order every other day

I am really not much of a position to part with the $12K just yet so I don't mind waiting in a long Scarlet-W line if that is what it comes to. I will probably just do the Scarlet-W package deposit before 10/11 and wait to see what happens.

just to clarify slightly changed language
'bundle' vs 'brain' order - if we have Raven/Scarllet-W 'brain' on preorder we can switch to 'Epic-W' brain (and it will be 8K sensor with frame rates yet to be announced).

Are we seeing a DSMC CANON MOUNT 2.0 to work with WH like we have DSMC MG PL MOUNT 2.0 or the current DSMC CANON MOUNT will work straight with WH?

The existing canon mount works with helium.

I believe Phil posted a picture of a different Canon mount he was using for his VV brain.

Helium 8K S35 "should" be fine with current PL and EF mounts for RED Dragon 6K cameras.

The Canon Mount I have (as well as the PL mount) are for the Dragon 8K VV cameras.

Have you tested the Motion Mounts (both PL & EF) with 8K sensors?

If not you (being on the road), anyone else?
