The Update Thread

I guess the main thing for current Epic owners to wonder is just how much the data/frame rates difference will be and whether or not that's worth an extra upgrade cost/step...since we have to make that call before the announcement on Oct. 11th. Hoping for 8k@48fps at least. And then 7K@96fps. Would be close enough performance to the 6K options on Epic-D though a little smaller FOV, but worth the trade-off for new sensor and 8K. Ideally the Weapon Helium just takes it to a new level of performance rather than downgrading the standard of Epic performance too much.

I don't know if I'll be able to afford it yet or not, but leaning towards Epic-W and giving up the MG upgrade option. The accessory package didn't fit what I'd need anyway.

But honestly I was talking to a buddy about it. The SW at that price IS "disruptive" and is sooooooo attractive for producers. basically the perfect camera for today. Its soo hard choosing to have the camera of future now, or the baddest camera on the block for todays needs (IMHO SCARLET-W).

edit: i think its should be said. even if you do not take THIS offer from red. I THINK the SCARLET-W will continue to be future proof for the DSMC2 line

You're right on with the Scarlet-W being the perfect camera for right now. That's my struggle (and I'm sure many others) about possibly upgrading to 8K. I've been kind of testing the waters and asking different directors/producers/clients about the prospect of 8K acquisition and it's been a mixed bag. I'm not shooting projects that want future-proofed footage that they can re-finish at higher resolutions later (like TV shows, movies, etc), so the file sizes and even sticker-shock of 8K (not price--just the image size--to producers or post-houses) could be a hindrance to some of my shoots. And the Scarlet-W being the perfect "right now" camera makes it a tough decision!

Jarred if we've paid our $5K upgrade deposit are we safe? We just haven't sent in our Epic Dragon to be upgraded cuz we're shooting a lot and informed by our bomb rep the wait could be considerable (a month, etc).

Id love to avoid spending too much on rentals while down a body...

However we do have a second Epic D that is currently not on any path...Putting its Magnesium deposit down before Oct 11th would put it safely in a line yes?

I just wouldnt be able to send them both in before Oct 11th...as both cams may be working pretty solid till then.

Thx!!

Good question, Nick. Hope you are doing well...!

The EPIC/SCARLET DRAGON to WEAPON Mg or CF path has been around since April 2015. And as Jarred has said countless times, "all good things come to an end." Come Oct 11, we will cease upgrades to WEAPON Mg. If you are not in WIP by then, you can apply your deposit to what other offers are out there for your camera class.

IMHO, the two best deals we had were the old RED ONE trade in where you got full credit for your RED ONE against en EPIC-M package. And the WEAPON Mg upgrade... If I were a WEAPON Mg upgrader, I would be pretty happy where I sit regardless of what any one else's paths are.

Put yourself in our shoes for a second. Come Oct 11, here EVERY. SINGLE. CAMERA. OWNER. has something at the table for them*. SCARLET-W paid deposit folks as well. And RAVEN folks have had opportunity to go to SCARLET-W for awhile. Just about every darn person with skin the game has something for them to ponder. We have spent months and months discussing what seemed "fair" to each faction. "If we do x, that is great for the y group, but sucks for the z. Ok, let's start over..." This is why this will be the final net we cast. If you are not in a DSMC2 brain, this is your last chance to parley your existing camera to get into DSMC2 for a special price.

And while we are fully aware we won't please everyone.... Before you type that "you are screwing me" post, focus on what you have been offered to date and what is on the table on Oct 11 and I think you will see we have been pretty generous along the way. And with Oct 11 offers, Jarred is being extremely so. I lost a few arguments along the way the past few months, and you have Jarred to thank for where things netted out.

Whoops, sorry, Nick. My reply to you meandered into a mini-rant rabbit hole!

* If you never did a formal transfer of ownership, folks, do it now. On Oct 11, you don't want to log on to RED.com and not be eligible for an upgrade for a camera you have in your possession....

I get there is special pricing, but I was wanting to know if it is the $10K confirmed.

Also, on that sensor, where is it listed that it is 29.9mm x 15.77mm? If that is the case, it is bigger than S35 then. Being that the S-W sensor is 25.6mm x 13.5mm , if this is true, dang it, I'm now leaning towards the E-W.

If you can afford it, bite. In the long run it's always better. And remember, the real deal was setup for the SW orders implying that's where the greatest savings lay and Jarred has mentioned this over, every other deal right now is Red trying to extend the smiles to other customer segments.
For me, the realization that my MG+15k gets me thesame cam some good folks just bought at $59k a few weeks ago is too good to pass by.

just wondering if the size of the olpf will be the same as the Scarlet W? I own all 3 olpf so I suppose they will change those too sending me the Epic W??

Brent, I have a Scarlet MX that fell in the ocean while shooting the NY Jets Cheerleading team that i'm using as a paperweight. Can I upgrade it to a Weapon Helium? lol

Understood!

So to be clear, I'd need to send in my Epic-D brain by Oct 11th yes?

Just want to be clear on what qualifies sa WIP - paying deposit, or having Epic-D at RED HQ!

thanks!

No, but you could get into EPIC-W….

This part is making me super happy, but also super scared, lol.

I'm still the "official owner" of a Scarlet Dragon, but I sold the body (under the pretense that the upgrade is used, as I have used it for Scarlet-W upgrade). So no transfer of ownership took place. However, if I have to trade the body in... That sucks for me, but then I wouldn't have had the funds for the Epic-W anyway, so there's that.

Hey,

How long will the opportunity to upgrade from Dragon be on offer and will the pricing change?, I was planning to upgrade right on Oct 11 but just found out that my knee is blown and I need to go in for surgery therefore no shooting for 4 months making it tough for me to upgrade right away. Hoping that the pricing will stand for a little bit as I definitely want to get on board. As well will there be any different pricing for Dragon-M vs X?

Super stoked to see what you've got coming!

Jay

Jay, there will be different upgrade paths for EPIC/SCARLEt DRAGON owners come Oct 11 that currently exist today. Both are great, yet different, options. The Oct 11 path will shut down EOY.

Sounds like the Mg will be EOL come October then.

Great thanks Brent guess Ill need to hustle before surgery hehe. By that do you mean different between Dragon-M and Dragon-X? Just wondering if owning a pre NAB 2015 Epic-M Dragon will hold any weight anymore like it does in the current upgrade path.

Cheers

Good. Never liked that option. Lovin' the EPIC-W option for EPIC Dragon folks. Long time coming. Can't wait to hear more. But please, please give us more time than EOY... it's not easy to come up w funds for indie filmmakers like me who are NOT into the rental business. Please consider that. Thanks!!

DJ, not EOL, per se. Will still be supported via firmware upgrades and such. But, yes, as part of our lineup simplification, we will no longer be making new ones after Oct 11.

I wonder if Scarlet-W will make it past the Oct 11 day, or it will be sharing the same fate with WMg :)
