  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

if you can manufacturer custom asic etc why not real time interpolation so you can get full frame (whatever that is) and clean pixel bin / interpolate to 4K (or whatever) for high speed - that would resolve two issues - aliasing since you would be oversampling and data rates since only the 4K (or whatever) would have to be written to storage
But having said that it would probably add a lot to price, heat management, etc.

You have to consider the camera as a system, not just a sensor. If you want to get a full-frame image at a high frame rate, you have to be able to read the data off of the sensor, convert it to raw data and extract the noise profile, and then encode the data into Redcode.

Though you'd save less data than if you saved the full frame image, you'd be processing just as much plus interpolating it down to a smaller size. That's probably why the Scarlet-W is capped at 2K and 422 for ProRes recording.

I think Jarred is already smoking a blunt for high FPS in the near future... After HELIUM, I think the moment came for that challenge to accomplish.... I hope Brent is not mad about that thought from Jarred... LOL

What about the engineers who have to implement this stuff? :)

How can I make a formal update of informal hints? Haha. I would tell you the same thing I tell Jarred - "Wait till October!"

The RED TEAM jump button next to the post number in my and Jarred's headers is your best friend. Takes only to the next post of a RED team member. When you see the RED coin logo, it is the last post by a RED person...

I meant a "formal" September update thread...where Jarred would go and post more hints as he can't wait for October as much as we do....:) but the RED TEAM button is a great tip.

An observation

Wayne, don't take this the wrong way! :)

Wayne sure does post a lot.

I am sure Wayne knows what Wayne is posting about....

But, I never do....
That's OK, get into science technology, engineering and philosophy, instead of Bikes, and you will Scot. :)

I am a daily reader for many years and not a poster but the way I cut through the cheese and get my fix of the good stuff is to bookmark all of Jarred recent posts as my first REDUSER bookmark page. This link shows only his posts and I can scan and see if there is interesting info very fast:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=2&contenttype=vBForum_Post&showposts=1

And also his Facebook Page as he seems to post there more good things there now first : https://www.facebook.com/jarred.land

I mean, just new updates in different threads, or by month, so you can just say, that's interesting while passing by occasionally, and read it. I don't think I'm going be stalking every post of Jarred. However, flights to fiji are cheap :) (joking. But pity Jim is unlikely to come across here from Fijj with the new draconianly expensive border laws to get a super yacht into here, which somebody was telling me about).

I don't know much about how sensors are installed in cameras so forgive my ignorance, but I've noticed RED lists the older Dragon models, Red Epic Dragon, Red Scarlet Dragon, as being in stock. If these lines were to be retired in October (nothing has been said for sure), could those sensors be used in Scarlet-W cameras? Just wondering if that could be another source of sensors, if they are the same.

Same Pixel design but the sensor boards and sensors are a generation ahead and very different, that is why a Dragon sensor in a Weapon / Scarlet-W performs better than a Dragon in a Epic / Scarlet.

Helium is the thing helping the que tremendously... You've likely seen an increase in Scarlet-W allocations over social media very recently. That is because we didn't just shut down Dragon lines to make room for the Helium sensors like a normal cost sensitive production plan would entail , instead we opened up completely new lines for Helium and that will continue to pay dividends in terms of allocation. Not going to catch up overnight... there still is going to be some waiting to be had, but that waiting is much shorter than if Helium didn't exist.

I know its hard not to hate on the Stormtrooper guys and those other Helium customers that we can't talk about that are running around with cameras in hand while you continue to wait but you should be giving them some love because they are making things better for everyone.

As a "Stormtrooper guy" I still cannot say good enough things about my time with the DSMC2 Dragon combo. Yes, helium is totally game-changing... it's mind-blowing good. But, I worked with a Weapon/Dragon last weekend (thanks to Kevin and Colin at Red) and it reminded me just how good DSMC2 Dragon is... and will be for a very long time. Anyone feeling bummed about waiting for a DSMC2 Dragon (because of Helium) shouldn't be. Go shoot with any DSMC2 Dragon camera and you will be blown away. Its sooo clean, light and easy to use, Blackshading simplified, and it will impress anyone on the fence about Red. It's really a big step-up from DSMC1 Dragon, even though the sensor specs are basically the same. There is magic in the new box, I've seen it. In my time with Weapon/Dragon I made at least a dozen "Alexa people" take a second look at Red after they were on set with my Weapon, especially with ProRes (as crazy as it is not to utilize .R3D).

Sure, if there is a path to Helium and it fits your budget, go for it. Just do not be sad about DSMC2 Dragon. It sill blows away everything else out there, not counting the unofficially announced ones ;) [helium]

Thanks for the info, Jarred. I knew the body internals were different, but I didn't know the sensors themselves were diiferent too. I know my Scarlet-W will be worth the wait. I don't mind waiting. I've also been seeing on Instagram that people are posting pictures of their new Scarlet-Ws. That's awesome. And here's some love to the Helium guys. I'm actually enjoying seeing all the white accessories that go with it and the frames coming out of it. And who knows, I may be one of the people helping the queue by jumping over to Helium in October. (My wife just told me not to get my hopes up. She does the budget.)

Are there any ungraded helium frames around? Im interested in how colorful it is naturally.

Damn, I'm very excited that I could eventually upgrade my Epic-MX to Epic-W, on the other hand I'm panicking this will ruin me, haha!
Besides the upgrade price what concerns me a bit is that "same sized S35 Helium sensor inside Epic-W" but I guess with lower than 8K resolution (smaller active area of sensor) would mean a significant crop. As I do a lot of slowmotion that could be an issue for shooting wide @ 2-4K

I'd love to see an upgrade path open up from Epic-MX to Weapon Mg with the regular 6K Dragon sensor, that would make me very very happy!

Is it October yet?

I love September. It is a great month for many reasons. But for some REASON this year, I CANNOT WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER TO BE OVER!

Its not another day of posts yet is it? :)

The footie from Helium is ridiculous. Even while shooting with it, looking at the RED Touch, your jaw drops to the floor. Throw that up on a big monitor/projector in post and your nuts hit the floor. Take a look at the list of all the special/fortunate people who currently own a Helium sensor...that list should speak for itself.
