does anyone have any experience with the canon 17-55 2.8? it is listed as an EF-S lens but i know that some lenses (like the tokina 11-16) can be used at 5K without problems...i know that this is more or less a "L" lens and generally performs great....just not sure if it covers the whole sensor at 5K...especially at the wide end....any input welcome...

it is a good lens and I like it , but it does vignette at 5K even @ 55mm
it is fine at 4k? correct?
is the vignetting just fall off (darker edges) or actual cut off (hitting the edge of the circle of illumination?)
i really like the 24-105 but it is a little long at 4k and the 16-35 is not my fav.....the 17-55 would be perfect....
how is the CA?

at 4K is fine, and it's not just a fall off, just a fall off is on Tokina 11-16 at 11mm 5K, on 17-55mm it's pretty bad vignetting,
it is dark already, I'll post some pics for you tomorrow;

thanks no need to post....makes sense...i will stick with what i have and look into the rokinons for primes...

Rokinons are great, have 85 and 35 - very sharp, very low ca,
my 24 cine is still on the way, can't wait to shoot some dark with it :)

Canon 17-55mm

Hi there,

I've used the 17-55mm Canon EF-S on a red scarlet and it's fine at 4k. At 5k it will vignette. The lens itself is actually very decent and I never truly understood why some are suppose to be better quality with the L model and others were meant to be less as good without the L. Don't get me started with this EF-S branding.

Anyhow, I wouldn't buy it if you plan to shoot 5k to get photos but other then that, it is usable.

Wil

The Rokinons are great.
35, sharp as hell, heavy breather.
24, great, little soft wide open.
85, just a gem.

thanks everybody...yes, i am definitely getting the rokinon(s)...looking at the 14, 35 and 85...was just hoping to have a "one zoom" option instead of 2...

The 17-55 is the lens we use most on our Scarlet. Fantastic, but not entirely full frame at 5k. A minor crop will get rid of the vignette.
