  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

wow... handbags on the update thread....

Is anyone maintaining a Scarlet-W queue like the Raven one? Should we start one?

I don't believe anyone is keeping track of a Scarlet-W queue, having one would be nice.

Going back to Jarred's update... there are a few things I found interesting that I didn't hear much discussion on:

...Helium's first sensor is the 8K s35 build on a completely new sensor line and will be available to Weapon customers in the coming months. (Or the coming weeks for those that know where to look)

Helium will take pressure off our Dragon sensor lines and allow those lines to completely focus on Raven and Scarlet-W sensors.

O... and Epic-W will be Helium.

1. "(Or the coming weeks for those that know where to look)"

I'd like to find out where to look. Does anyone know?

2. "Helium will take pressure off our Dragon sensor lines..."

This seems really interesting because how does adding a new sensor help production of the current sensor? ...unless Jarred is anticipating a lot of switchers to the new sensor.

3. "Epic-W will be Helium."

This was the first time I heard of Epic-W. Wouldn't it make sense from a naming convention/marketing point of view if Epic-W and Scarlet-W shared the same sensors? Maybe Scarlet-Ws will get the new sensor as well?

1. - I think a lot of us would also like to know!

2. - Since it's a new sensor, producing it doesn't effect the current production rate. Since 8k S35 will be available for Weapon, it's safe to assume new Weapon orders will choose the Helium sensor. Since Weapon's won't be using a 6k cut of Dragon, even more smaller 4.5k & 5k cuts will be ready for S-W & Raven.

3. - Nobody really knows yet, I think we all are waiting for Jarred's adult supervision to go on vacation.

This is all speculation on my part, but Jarred mentioned RED has bought new ovens to bake the sensors in... and it takes about 2 weeks to do a batch if I remember correctly. I can only assume some of these new ovens will be dedicated to the Helium sensor since it has different sized pixels and will work only in Helium spec'd cameras.

That leaves the old ovens (and perhaps some new ones) to cook up the Dragon sensor silicon. My hope is they have added new equipment to the Dragon sensor lines and they are coming out of the oven soon.

They can get a more efficient sensor yield by cutting the silicon into RAVEN and Scarlet W sensors, so I would expect those two to take priority. Maybe they are going to offer some sort of path to Helium to balance out the remaining RAVEN and Scarlet orders... I don't know... just thinking out loud.

Internally, I'm screaming very loud because if I'm right that means the 8k VV sensor is for the most part going to be "sucking hind teat" in the pecking order.

Is it safe to assume that Scarlet-W wont' be getting a helium sensor anytime soon? I guess even if it did, it likely wouldn't be the full 8K and would thus be less than S35?

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. I feel like they would cut it down to 5-6K, but that'd be a pretty small sensor.

Here's a comparison of 5K HD on Helium vs 5K HD on Dragon... pretty big difference. Courtesy of Phil Holland's online tools:

Bought ovens Elsie, that's interesting. There has been small run manufacturers that used to do sensors before. But when you buy too much, you have to keep it going. I wonder if he meant booked the ovens, or are they actually running their own sensor plant and owning it? Jarred?

Probably the latter. Starting up a modern fab costs billions.

I got a call from a Red BS rep(not my normal rep) in February who told me I should switch my Scarlet-W February order from Red.com to an authorized vendor near me. He put me in contact with the vendor then promptly cancelled my Red order before I could decide if I wanted to do it. I didn't complain, because he assured me that I will receive my SW package sooner than if I stayed with Red.com. Seemed like solid advice, I'm sure he was right.

But I am still waiting, which is no big deal, it's expected. Now I am searching the internet for Atlantas so I can preorder Helium for a switch from my SW order..oh wait. Switching from Red to a vendor now feels very wrong.

Any leads on Helium? I'll cancel my SW vendor order in a second and transfer my deposit if I can get in the Helium line.

Yeah, seems like a 5K Helium Scarlet would be a strange sensor size. Not to mention the problem of the 140 MB/s data limit. To shoot 120 fps or so, it would be an even smaller cut of the sensor at like 4K. It makes me wonder if the Scarlet-W is staying as is until they upgrade the whole camera later to run at higher than 140 MB/s. So from this perspective, I feel like Scarlet-W is a safe buy with the dragon sensor for now without not much risk of it being upgraded very soon. But from the wording in his original post, Jarred says the 'first' helium sensor is 8K S35. So I assume that means other Helium sensors are coming eventually.

I don't know about anyone else but this update has only made me frustrated and confused.

I feel like I'm in line at a store waiting to buy a brand new highly demanded product but just then there's someone yelling from across the store about something even better and newer .... From the same company. So confused. Do I get out of line and go over? Do I stay?

There is no other line to go over to.
And chances are you will need to get what you are in line for before getting into the new thing line - or have to wait much, much longer and pay much, much more to buy it outright. By that time, there will be another one yelling about a new and better product.

:hurray:

Truer words...damn.

I really hope that is the case. But based on the verbiage about helping sensor production lines, my take is this is an entirely new product line with an entirely new set of atributes.

I guess it it would be nice to have a little more information on this epic-w before I have to finalize payment on my new dsmc2 investment.

I think your absolutely right. Announcing a hint of a new sensor, and camera in limited detail only makes people more anxious. And after the major delay issues going on with not only brains but a bunch of accessories too, you would think would show Red not to prematurely announce anymore. My guess would be Red needs to stop announcing until products are almost ready to go out, and don't announce before they are prepared to announce all the specs and details about the product.

Oh, bad news :( My UK rep told me we might be looking at another month of waiting until I get my MgW upgraded. That would be a perfect wait for me if there is any chance that the Helium upgrade is done in the same time frame :) Any news on this?
