I can't believe how many of you are willing to switch to the next camera they just rumored about. It's not even officially announced. I mean you are looking for at least a year of waiting. You have already waited 8 months for scarlet. You must really enjoy waiting.

Maybe that's how Red plans on catching up on Scarlet-W and Raven preorders... tempt people with a new camera and make the queue for the current one smaller ;)

What are you talking about? Terra is no rumor but real. Question is if they can deliver on time. Basically same game as Red. But I have big hope they do.
And nope, I am not enjoying waiting. This is why I am looking for alternatives. Terra is just one option.

Fairly certain he's talking about the Epic-W.

and 6 months in, they come out with another one

If the Terra stars shipping this month as they say it will (the 6K version, anyway -- they're saying that the 5K version is due in September) they could end up absorbing a lot of 4.6K and Scarlet-W and Raven depositors... and probably end up in the same situation of being unable to keep up with the pent-up demand that the constant and seemingly growing delays are creating.

and free up our queue a bit, so it will actually help us to move up. Com'on Terra, start shipping!

As a side-note on that, I'm wondering what people really use totally uncompressed RAW for? Obviously it's the best handling of the data, but it's like if every image on the internet were uncompressed TIFFs, on normal screens you wouldn't see any difference, but it would clog the entire connection just scrolling a normal webpage, filling up hard drive space after a couple of hours surfing. The same thing applies to shooting R3D. I don't think many productions at all manage to shoot an entire film in uncompressed RAW and those who tried have said they'd never do it again and that's with cameras shooting 3K, not 6 or 8K.

I'm trying to understand how people relate to cameras and productions because, based on how some people talk about all this, it seems like everyone have their own large post production facility in their backyard. The demands of 6 or 8K uncompressed RAW is enough for even the biggest companies to break their workflow. Only few productions have done it, like Gone Girl with their 6K DPX editing, but have people actually looked at the specs of the tech behind making that shit run? Most people can't tell the difference between 5:1 compressed RAW and uncompressed RAW, especially when it's downscaled and processed into something else like DPX. So why are so many screaming for uncompressed RAW?

Anyone with any production or production planning experience knows that on one hand you have the highest quality images possible and on the other you have the damn budget. Maybe only 0.5% of everyone in here might come close to doing a large project with uncompressed RAW and have the budget to handle it.

This is one of the most important things I'm considering thinking ahead at a possible 8K Helium upgrade. Yes, any small project could be handled, but doing episodic or feature film stuff or even short films will become a great pain to handle and fund. People barely handles 6K and many times I'm considering dropping to 5K just to handle larger portions of material.

8K is great, but we are far ahead of it's time as an end format. For downscaling, Phil has proven 8K downscale to 4K adds a lot of improvements to the image. But how many will be able to handle a real production with 8K files at 2:1?

1+

Side note, we have been shooting R1Mx as B-Cam along with Epic Dragon a lot. In 90% of the shots you don't see any difference - I mean without pixel peeping. Thus, I really don't understand this pixel war and more Ks.

Go Terra go!
If I get my Terra by August, I am the first to jump off the Red bandwagon. Better to have a working kit than waiting.

You'll be second ^^
Just received that today (despite a S-W order within the 2 first hours).

Congrats!
Have thought about Varicam too. Unfortunately too big and heavy for drone work. But definitely a valuable choice.

Ugo, congrats on your purchase ! Is that true that Panasonic is giving a 5 year warranty on this Varicam LT in Europe ?

Their US distributor tells me that they're shipping at the end of this month... I guess we'll see.

That would be awesome!

Side note, Kinefinity has quite a broad distribution network within Europe. I am not sure if this is strategic or because it is harder to find a distributor in the US with Red dominancy. Nevertheless, it clearly shows their market penetration in the western hemisphere is growing.

Probably a bit of both. It was most likely fairly easy for AJA to get distributors to give them a chance with the Cion since so many already carried AJA products, and AJA service has a great reputation. Kinefinity on the other hand is a newcomer and therefore pretty much unproven, while at the same time entering a pretty crowded market, priced to compete with Black Magic, but the camera's design and specs make it pretty clear that their target really is the Scarlet-W...

You could have said the same to people switching from Raven to Scarlet-W, yet they are the only ones to have received the camera so far.

If you look back at the "June Update" Brent said this....

See above, ha.

Ok, would EXPECT all of Dec 10 to be allocated in July. But like Jarred said, we just don’t know exact units until they are in hand. These are “current expectations”, not “guarantees.”

But I guess whatever problems they have run into are significant because i was essentially told tonight by my Bomb Dood "No way...."

Alas: We'll get there.

Remember when we used to laugh at the people who were still waiting for their Ursa Minis...
