The Update Thread

I am in line to upgrade from Epic Dragon to Weapon CF

I have paid my deposit, but would now like to hang on till October to decide what to do.

If I change my mind and want to go to Epic W or Helium is this cool? Will my deposit still be honoured on a new upgrade path?

Cheers,

Paul

Jarred,
I have one question about Epic Dragon --> Epic-W upgrades.

Will these be actual upgrades (like in taking some of the parts that are in the previous camera and putting them into the new one"), or just a simple camera swap where we send in our old camera and you send us a brand new one ?

Because I have a feeling most of the components have changed between Epic Dragon and Epic-W : the body is obviously 100% different, the sensor changes, and I was under the impression that most of the internal boards had also been upgraded to new and more powerful ones. So what is there left to "upgrade" ? I have the feeling that even the Redmag module is different...

Anyway, I'm asking because a simple swap would mean a much faster turn around time. I've actually been meaning to send my Epic Dragon back to LA to have it upgraded to the swapable OLPF system (mine has to go back apparently to have it done...) for at least a year, but never found the time to do it because I'm using my camera too often... I mean, it's a good problem to have, but if you were able to make the turn-around times as short as possible for these upgrades, that would indeed be amazing :)

Thanks !

This thread is getting strenuous to read. Everyone needs to relax a bit, not everyone is going to be as happy as the next person thats life deal with it. Wait until October 11th to see what deal you've been blessed with by RED.:attention9ha:

rant over...:chillpill:

:sarcasm: Jared will red rocket x work with helium footage?

I honestly see a lot more excitement. and for some I'm sure its more of a "what is going on?" sort of feeling. I mean with new hints every couple days, new upgrade paths we never thought possible, and more to be disclosed it definitely gets the heart pumping!

Some will trip and nit pick, and over think. Bottom line is.. October 11th (Judgement Day) will be "Epic"

=)

c'mon man, don't try and make people feel bad for the reality that 1. their computers may not handle 8K, 2. They may need thousands of more dollars in mini mags and hard drives, 3. clients may push back on receiving 8K footage, 4. it's more money (even though it's a great deal), 5. shooting at lower resolutions complicates their lens options...

We are all very excited but I don't think it's constructive to dismiss people's realistic concerns. Some people are asking these questions because no matter how incredible the Epic-W is (price + specs), the fact is that the Scarlet-W might still be a better fit for some.

Well is you're super, duper, freaky picky with Helium 7K HD nets you a near identical crop factor to Super 35mm:

http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/formatCompare.cgi?formatOne_typeTech=RED%7CHelium&formatOne_format=7K+HD&formatTwo_typeTech=Kodak%7CFilm&formatTwo_format=Super+35mm+4-Perf&focalLengths=

Or you know. Just shoot 7K FF as well.

In general the 8K FF image circle is within the expected tolerance of many Super 35mm lenses.

this is super helpful Phil. that image looks great also.. where is that?

Your welcome. But Austin was actually right and you are also actually right.... well right enough....

I think what is confusing you is crop factors are usually listed in relation to Full Frame 35mm, And Austin gave you his answer in relation to Super 35mm.

I am still trying to figure out which camera in 4kHD is the closest to s35mm format size on the sensor.
is it the Raven or scarlet actually?

At 4KHD, Dragon is much closer to S35 than Helium (which would be closer to s16), though still smaller than true S35 (Dragon S35 is around 5.5KHD). To really get full S35 at 4KHD, you'd need to go back to the MX.

Raven and Scarlet-W utilize the same Dragon sensor and are the same sized image plane at 4K HD for both.

This shows the maximum frame sizes of Dragon and Helium in relationship to common motion picture formats if that helps:

actually kevin answers this a little better, i know the sizes with the max resolution, thanks to your chart, but im saying if every camera available was set to 4khd, which would closest to s35.

Except you specifically asked which was closer between the Raven and the Scarlet... which means Phils answer is literally exactly what you asked for...

I am error!

I was once overheard talking shop by an uninitiated, "Should we shoot blackmagic or red dragon?" and was complimented, "I really love the nicknames you have given your cameras".

I really like the names 'Mysterium' 'Red One' 'Red Dragon' and 'Red Raven' and I think those names were generally well received. Raven is great because as the only camera with that name, you know exactly what it is. Helium is maybe less evocative but fits in well and is distinctive and original as a product line.

Scarlet, Weapon, Epic, Bomb, for whatever reason these don't really carry any positive or attractive connotations.

When your camera is officially named 'Red Weapon Dragon Vista Vision Woven Carbon Fiber 8k' you might as well go the route most japanese cameras have gone and name it R75d mkIII or the like.

Weapon Dragon 8K VV... To be exact.

Which my self and every one I know in the business referring to it called: 8k Vista Vision... No other camera to be confused with...

If they further enquire as what camera it is, I say it's RED's flagship camera... :)

I find "Weapon", "Bomb Squad", etc really offputting - like you need to add a "brah" onto the end of it, while wearing a backwards baseball cap and cargo shorts, and making "jokes" that end in "...women, am I right?!"

Raven and Scarlet are way cool names, though.

I've always joked about having to fly with RED gear:

"I brought my Weapon, the Bomb, the W.M.D., and the T.H.C.!"

but yeah, I like the names Raven and Scarlet more than the military stuff.
