So buried in the RAVEN ANNOUNCEMENT thread, Jarred said this, buried in a much longer post:

Epic has a path forward into the new form factor, Scarlet will see a path forward to the new form factor, then there will be a new sensor in a few years, and then a few years after that the cycle repeats all over again.

There were some quotes of people, but no follow up.

What do we think he meant by that? A Trade-In program?

you should put this in the scarlet section, this is the raven section

This definitely pertains to the Raven as he was speaking in the Raven thread, and I imagine there's a number of us Scarlet owners unsure if we should sell or wait for an official announcement for the upgrade path.

There is a lot that is not known yet. It calls for patience. No one knows what RED will introduce but we can be sure they will continue to innovate and offer products that we want. He said what he said. Take it at face value and enjoy the ride while you wait.

Yes MX has a closed road path except from Scarlet to Epic $9500

I'd prefer Epic MX over Scarlet Dragon but thats me. Larger Sensor at Speed and better 5K Compression Ratios plus HiSpeed. No Mid-Tonal Value or Hi-Light protection that Dragon offer =(

Still I'm willing to bet a more expensive Raven with PL Mount and 4.5k-5K Resolution

Really only thing holding me back is an Interchangeable Mount I can live with the Crop Factor, 3:1 plus ProRes is really nice

So shocked after I read this article that they would have gone Fixed

Or this could the beginning of Red cameras with Fixed Lens Mounts on their lowerend cameras

Probably sell more cameras but I'd say the mounts have better margins; hard to say which would make more money.

I've had to do Surgery on two C300 EOS camera to PL lol so stupid

I'm hopeful will allow a trade in for the value of the Epic Dragon X on whatever this camera ends up being. I simply can't afford the Weapon, and while I think i'm getting a Raven. Would also love to move over my Epic Dragon to a smaller body with similar benefits of Raven/Weapon. And at this point Spec wise based on Raven, one would have to assume it would atleast shoot maybe 5K 60-96?

Any other Epic X Dragon users hopeful of this option?

Yeah I too would be interested in seeing what's offered from a Epic Dragon trade-in into the new form factor. Be honest that I probably can't afford it since the modules to regain all my current built-in features (like HDMI and SDI and audio) will cost so much to regain. I do like the new form factor and weight.

Scarlet-Weapon is kind of what I'm waiting for, somewhere between the Weapon (too expensive for me) and the Raven.

In the meantime, I put down my pre-order for the Raven, going to shoot a ton with it and when the Scarlet Weapon comes out, probably just sell the Raven (only $6K so no losing) and buy the next one up. I think that's going to be the sweet spot for a lot of people if it's between $16K to $20K for the body. Still pricey, but you won't go stupid broke and risk too much monetarily.

I want a Weapon because it's cool and new and I'm obsessed with new tech, lol. But I don't want it enough to buy it now because it's not worth the investment for me just for the new body and better compression over Epic Dragon. I do like the built in wi-fi and smaller build. The hype over ProRes just makes producers who are scared of R3Ds think they're justified in their fear. Unless 4K ProRes 444, straight from the 6K sensor is looking better than 6K compressed R3D transcoded to ProRes 444, the ProRes feature wouldn't cross my mind even if I had Weapon.

So for me, it'll be Epic Dragon until there is a new sensor after Dragon. But I say that all the time and I haven't kept a camera for more than a year for like the past 5 years, lol. I wouldn't be too surprised if I said fuck it and got a Weapon though. But I have lots of stuff to shoot on this Epic Dragon before then.

Haha I've been the same up until now. I love my Epic Dragon. But I couldn't resist the Raven for the size and what it offers. And for what I do weight or lack their of is king.

Curious to see whats in store. The Weapon while amazing, is just so far beyond my reach. But who knows in a few months just like you said haha.

I'm hoping to go to Epic Dragon when I upgrade from Scarlet Dragon and that won't be for probably a year. Getting a slightly smaller body only means buying a lot of new accessories, not all new, but enough to hope that Epic Dragon is around for a long time. In fact I hope they upgrade the sensor when that's coming without insisting on going to the Weapon body. I kind of feel that the old body is small enough. ProRes is OK but it is a compromise compared to r3d.

I honestly wouldn't count on a sensor upgrade from Epic Dragon to something new without going through Weapon. My guess is all new sensors will demand the ASICs inside the Weapon/Raven body in order to work. Kind of like the Dragon sensor was never offered for the RED One.

RED, being the generous souls that they are, may offer an opportunity to jump both levels at once - body and sensor - but then, of course, it will cost more than just the sensor upgrade only.

Not sure why there is so much speculation the boards when so much has been clearly stated. Upgrades go body then sensor then body then sensor. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Dragon is the last upgrade for the scarlet body form factor. Whether or not RED makes a body inbetween Raven and Weapon, or just makes a cheaper weapon (w/ slightly limited specs) remains to be seen.

Im not sure if i imagined this ot it was actually mentioned somewhere. But back when all the debate was going on right before and/or just after the NAB weapon announcement... didn't someone "official' say that the dragon sensor was capable of much more...but that the old DSMC body form factor was limiting it in some way?? Or something to that effect?

Is the mg weapon already it though vs a different model n what further limitations would it have over MG to segment it better than raven but lesser than MG? for owner ops something in that price range might very well make sense for red to fill... it will be interesting to see if rental houses stock MGs and Ravens, along with if there is a middle tier product? traditionally i think scarlets have not been great rental cameras other than to those who understand its feature set technically and knew at 24p 4k it was fine. Hardly anywhere I know locally even stocks the scarlets so it will be an interesting thing when red has so many options on the market

It wasn't 'much' more, but yes. The DSMC² body unleashed the full potential of the Dragon sensor, which opens the dynamic range of the darks a bit more, thus cleaner when raising ISO.

Lower REDCODE RAW Compression Ratios.

This is a big deal for some both for normal speed shooting and high frame rate work.

I'm now on the fence about selling my S Dragon. Theres talks of something good happening to it.

Could theses be the upgrades on a S Dragon or is it just a misprint?
