ACCEPTABLE: (note the ample distance between the hands, thus reducing overall douchebaggery)

Sorry, I'm guilty...

I've used my hands to frame geometry I want in and out of frame often on scouts to see what problems can be solved in camera. Had a good funny chat on set with an academy award winning DP about "ghost framing" a few years ago. Both coming to the conclusion.... "Whatever it takes."

They make Director's Viewfinders for a similar reason.....

Oh. And on that note. There's a useful app called "Artemis" on iPhone and Droid that you can actually save approximate focal lengths and still images for those who enjoy planning their shooting days.

Hand-framing is for those filmmakers that don't know what lens to use or to show the rest of us how to see the world. Although I have seen David Fincher do this a few times, and that dude knows exactly what lens to use.

Artemis iPhone app? Fine. Director's viewfinder? Great. Fingers? Come on. It's like a foreman holding out his arms and saying "Build it this wide." You look silly. Stop it.

I'm on Droid, but the director who put me on to it was an iPhone guy. It's pretty handy. I've used it on a few scouts the last couple months.

Check out this application on the App Store:

Douchebag is as douchebag does... While the ol' four finger finder isn't grounds enough for me to make a douchebag declaration, it may alert the early warning system in the presence of other factors. A beret or ascot would qualify as contributing factors for sure, and if it isn't cold a scarf counts as an ascot. You have to have genuine ultra-style going on to pull off any of those things. ;-) Ultimately it's all about attitude though.

It's just a way to communicate a complex idea. I never do it, but that's just me.

There's one I downloaded for 23 bucks called Viewfinder CINE. Pretty nice, they have a preset for EPIC, Red One, and Scarlet, 2K, 4K, 5K, 4K HD, etc...2:1 aspect ratio etc.... 4 presets to program different lenses crop factors etc.... The widest you can shoot is 21 mm after that you need to use an adapter.
