  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Martian - Ridley Scott + Dariusz Wolski shot on RED DRAGON

I saw Interstellar on 70mm film here in Calgary and while it looked fantastic in some respects, the excess grain in low light scenes and soft focus on some shots was definitely distracting. I know I'll get shot down for saying that, which is fine, but it's all just art and my subjective preference. I very much enjoy the clean look of RED/Arri Alexa digital acquisition and excited about where things are going with the digital medium. I'm one of those guys who won't miss film the least bit. And for the record, The Martian looks phenomenal. Can't wait to see it both in 2d and 3d (at home).

Please leave Matt Demon on Mars

Please leave Matt Demon on Mars

Can they please do us all a favor and leave Matt Damon on Mars? haha

Not very original, but looks really cool. I will be waiting to see this.

Even though I'm not a "RED fanboy" I probably would have chosen the same camera for the film. NICE.

Still they didn't want to try 65mm? or IMAX or even the new ALEXA 65?

Daniel, very happy for you ! ;-)

the movie looks visually absolutely stunning... Ridley knows how to paint a picture...

(as a fan) it just really disappoints me to see him do these under-par scripts over and over... give him a great script and he delivers a classic.... is it the FOX curse ?

I can't wait to see this. I think it's going to be a much better film than Prometheus (which was not bad). It seems that we're all on the same page here.

I also think that there is no way that RED or Arri digital cameras look as good as film. Sorry about that. I'm a huge RED fan and I don't need to explain why. I'm also perplexed as to how anyone thinks that a 2K camera, even with lovely colour, is a replacement for 35mm. But does the RED Dragon look as good as film? No. Just... no. I don't mind if anyone disagrees. You trust your eyes and I'll trust mine and we'll all be happy. :-)

Ryan said, on page 1, "why doesn't Hollywood make movies about these kinds of awesome stories". Well, I know what you mean. I am not impressed by remakes and endless sequels, in general. And don't get me started on superhero movies. Some are great, sure, but if the studios want to get people to watch films, then the solution is easy: make good films and find amazing stories to tell. TV land seems like a much more interesting place to work, IMO.

That's brilliant Todd! I AM that guy!

If you think about it, MacGyver in space/on mars is really a great idea. Why didn't it come earlier? ;)

Am I the only one thinking that the over sharpening looks awful? Like in Exodus. Why this choice?

What does "look as good as" mean? Film looks like film, DC looks like DC (my short for "digital cinema") they are different you can't say one looks better than the other, you can say one feels more organic, or one feels cleaner or more colorful or more pastel or modern or nostalgic etc. etc. but I don't like the generalization of "looks as good as" or "better". I've seen work in digital and film that I love and in both that I hate. They are tools and different technologies. As a digital fan myself, and not a fan just because of the "look", I can say that in most cases digital is just a smarter choice for all the reasons we have discussed over that last 7 years. But if you want to say which has a brighter future then film is out, DC will continue to improve for years, film has for the most part finished evolving.

can you say what was the lowest compression rate used on panoramic scenes?
Just saw comment above about sharpening, but hard to gauge on YouTube cut!

Just saw the trailer on the big screen waiting for Jurassic World. I do hope the final movie does not have that sharpening effect on it. I think it looks horrible and I would be more distracted by that to enjoy the story. Don't get me wrong, I'll still go see it. But it just looks like film grain (which I love) mixed with artificial, digital grain (which I hate)

Thoughts?

When will we be able to see 4K 3D ?
From what I can tell most theaters are set up with 4K-2D / 2K-3D projection. I don't even know if there are any 4K-3D out there...
The Martian and the Hobbit etc all have the footage to go true 4K-3D... But when and where can we see it that way?

Or am I just missing out on the "good" theaters?

I saw Mad Max and although it's an amazing movie, I always wished it had better quality. 3D conversion with 2K+ Alexa Material doesn't quite hold up the image quality I'm looking for in a 150 million dollar movie nowadays. (Especially the establishing shot with max and his car, when he stepped on and ate the two headed lizard, felt soft like dv material. Will go see it again tonight and check on that again)

Some work that we are doing at the moment with dual Epic Dragons is being finished in 4K 3D. I went to a test screening last month and saw it at full resolution in 3D. Looked incredible.

Hi Patrick and hullo Tom!

yes sadly no 4K 3D DCP so no 3D 4K at the cinema. 2K3D @48fps is effectively halving the bit rate as it is so jumping up to 4K is asking a bit too much:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Cinema_Package

(check the 3D DCP spec)

However as Tom says, 3D in the home / exhibition is completely different as your not 'limited' by the DCI spec.

This is what Doug Trumbull was doing 2 years ago re: stereo HFR & high resolution :

http://www.studiodaily.com/2013/06/how-douglas-trumbull-made-a-4k-film-in-120-fps-stereo-3d/

8K 3D at 60fps would be pretty amazing. C'mon weapon! Happy to test some 8K HFR / put a projection system together if anyone (RED?!?!) is interested in lending me a couple of 8K flamethrowers?! A dual genlocked 4K projector system (stacked top & bottom) would give you passive 4K per eye and I saw an 8K TV from Panasonic years ago.

but then you have to ask the questions of "why" and "mass audience".

: )
