  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE M8 (008) Discussion thread

Hey Ketch,

Question for you since you have shot a fair amount of medium format and also worked with the Epic ... what do you think about the using the Epic on a monopod like many of the MF shooters do? And note -- I'm not just talked about for stills, also possibly for motion capture (moving around set or even outdoor location) giving you the ability to have lots of mobility yet also more stability than handheld .... Grazi :)

P.S. -- For stills, I think the R90 can even be attached to the monopod, right?

Hey Anthony,

I think that already EPIC-X has a great capacity, beautifully designed ergonomically, and the grip fill s just so
comfortable in your hands that is a joy to hand held Photo style, but will surely get the Bottom Grip as well.

However I do believe that once the EPIC 645 comes out, I will no longer purchase any MF Still Cameras and
can't wait for that day ;)

Yes I don't see why the R90 could not be attached to a Monopod, however the Monopod is really more for a
standard Ball Head type of mounts.

Wil be doing a High End Fashion Shoot with EPIC M8 on a Gitzo with Ball head in the next few days in California,
so you also get to see the EPIC in Photoshoot action ;)

As all answered before me Jeffrey, "NO" RED STUDIOS and KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS are entirely and
completely different entities, and even so I would absolutely have to think of be to be fortunate if it
was, I am an Independent FilmMaker Founder and Sole Proprietor, even so they are both Professional
Individuals and Corporations with Interests.

Hehe! Although doesn't Rossi mean Red's (or plural of red) in Italian. Predestined maybe is the word Ketch!!

Loving the spirit of the shooting so far. You truly look like you are having a blast.

Much love and respect to you all.

Looking forward to some breath taking images.

Wind and snow is slowing you guys down?

Do I need to send out my ET weather protection for the camera?

Just kidding. Good stuff guys.

Nah...minus 20F to plus 120F, rain, snow, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, no matter what - we roll :-)

As you might guess I already have the ET weather protection - and about everything else ET has made for Red.

It feels good to slow down for a few hours, check the images, do some posting - and get ready to head out for some more shooting this afternoon.

Fun times...happy to share

Haha, thanks Ketch yes I agree and can't wait for the 645 as well, with nice MF lenses ... yummmmm. Also, very eager to see your fashion shots with the Epic-X. And I agree, having held it before, I can say the ergonomics are AWESOME.

Btw, what does S35 come out to in terms of megapixels (though I know it's misleading to think just in terms of MP) ... just curious as I'm also thinking of how effectively the images from the Epic can be printed. Thanks for everything :)

Anthony

Light weight

Light weight

I can not wait until we fly the Epic with a Helicopter.

The Epic is so light you won't need a $450,000 Head like before.

The Red One battery last us the whole day.

I estimate that it's about 3 hours of continuous operations even in cold weather.

I love Epic.

:)

Jarred has stated on numerous occasions that the ventilation holes do not have direct access to any electronics and that the fans in there are user replaceable. While I don't think it's entirely safe to just pour water in there - a little rain hopefully won't blow up the camera. BUT - as always - take good care of your gear and get a rain-cover for it. I'm sure some 3rd party accessory-maker will be fast to provide one that is custom made for the Epic. Also - remember that the camera has ports all over it - and those certainly won't like to be drowned in water!

Wow - thanks for sharing Michael. Still, its a very nice setup.

I take it with the Mobile RED Rocket using the PCI slot on the MacBook Pro, you are backing up to FW800? What sort of time is it taking to off load the footage from the SSD cards to the G-Tech Drive (think thats what I can see? - correct me if I'm wrong!http://reduser.net/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif)

Thanks for sharing.

Steve,

I use Maxx Digital Drives exclusively for all critical data.

We did over 10 movies in 2008-2009 with them drives.

I usually budget for 12 to 24 of those for every movie.

They go on set but they also become permanent archives drives.

The drive can do FW800 or RAID eSATA for really fast off loading. (Do not use USB 2.0 unless it's your only option)

The protective carrying cases are a must, but the drives are the best on the market for Mission Critical Data.

Tonaci also use them in VietNam where it's really hot.

FW800 is about 2GB per minute with Red Station.

The G-Tech drive are for non critical triplicated data.

The Mobile RR run at 1x on the laptop "Express 34 Slot" and PCIe 4x on the desktop.

I can get you special pricing on Maxx Digital Drives if you need to.

:)

Michael, I totally agree with what you are saying. Problem is, when will these new heads come to be? One thing is to have less load to worry about in the design, but you also need GPS and other fancy type of tracking, uber-smooth action in the motors, a well designed gyro system, great control boards, etc, etc. I am just trying to make myself clear --I don't disagree. Just wondering how long it will be till we see more affordable heli head that can compete with the Eclipse, but at a more indie friendly price point.... cause I want the number to that rental house!! :)

And since you'll still want the Optimo 24-290mm or other large zoom on it, all the lens control stuff, and a big battery, bottom line you only shave about 10lbs. give or take a few.

I really hope you are right.

There are going be a ton of new heads on the market this year at NAB.

You will have many options for smaller and less expensive heads.

Between $50K to $250K is going to be a lot of options.

They might even have automation build in too.

:))

We are very lucky to even have enough internet bandwidth here to even do what we do so far.

Uploading one .R3D clip would probably take a week.

Please stay tune, the journey is just beginning.

Haha. "Journey" film... :)

Michael has definitely grown into a great friend these past 3 days I've known him. Thanks Michael for everything you've been doing. You don't get the credit you deserve, so let me start giving you a bit right here... :hurray:

Thanks for the support guys...much appreciated by our crew. If the roles were reversed and you had this opportunity to get Epic M8, I believe that most of you would do the same thing our crew here has - hook up your friends and associates with insight, BTS video and photos, and finally stills and short clips from the camera. In essence, I believe we're not doing anything you wouldn't do if the roles were reversed.

We'll try to get some rest this evening - but it will be way hard because we've been through such an exciting four days :)

More info, pics, and video to come shortly...
