  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE M8 (008) Discussion thread

Steve the area you are shooting in is very beautiful and is a great place to test. When will you have a small sample of footage posted up in this thread?

So far we've just posted behind the scenes photos and video of the crew in action. Our first mission is to capture as many high quality images as we can. Once we collect al the images, and have the time to analyze the footage and make some selects, we'll post some short clips and raw stills.

Meanwhile the work is way fun...:)

Thanks for all the supportive comments everyone. Our crew is way happy to share our M8 exploits with all of you. Hopefully it will give each of you some insight into the camera, its accessories, and some alternative ways to put it all to use.

This camera is way, way, way cool :)

Me too. I would love to hear more about Gibby's story and how he went from War veteran to the film industry, and how he first became friends with Jim. I've had the unique pleasure of speaking a lot with Ketch, but not Gibby and I'd love to know more ... such amazing characters and stories here in the Red movement :)

Thanks Anthony...as soon as I get a chance - probably Wednesday when I get a chance to breath, I'll post up a quick summary of how I went from a Viet Nam war veteran to what I do now. Life has some way interesting twists for everyone - forks in the road - and I've surely had my share of those :)

Jim and I have been friends since 1985. when I get a chance I'll give a quick story how that happened, and how I ended up jumping aboard the Red train back in mid-2005.

Thanks for your interest and your contributions to this Red User family!

Ketch Rossi shows just how happy he's been this weekend. I think he speaks for all of us...

The Snow was so beautiful and at the end of the days shoot I had to roll ;)

Thanks again guys, this forum is so kind to us, love it ;)

This is truly what pushes us so hard to bring you all that we do, in pictures and videos,
in the hope to share a little of what we are experiencing with Epic M8!!

PS: Thanks Joseph for not mentioning that after that roll, and been taken back to base by the Snow Cat ( a Ranger on Steroids)
I had to be taken back on a Snow Mobile to recover my iPhone he he.

I love hearing from Gibby. There is obviously something very grounding about his approach to photography. I always feel like I am learning about the intangibles when reading his posts and it makes me wanna go out there and get lost hunting for natural beauty with a camera. I get the same thing from Tom Lowe.

Thanks for those very kind words Roberto. Oh yeah...its a big beautiful natural world out here - fresh air, wide open spaces, great views, interesting critters, fun people, cool things to do - and then also some great chances to document these things for others who may never get the chance to see and experience them for themselves in person.

Being out here makes you feel really alive, uncluttered, unhurried, and at peace.

Many here share those same sentiments....and I think that gives Red User one more dimension of breadth and diversity of approach.

Everyone's passion is valid...

Hey Guys!

By the latest pics in the other thread it really looks like you are cranking out the high frame rate images in the mountains!

What aspect ratio are you capturing all of this at?

Also would like to reissue my appreciation for all of the updates. It feels like you two are representing the heart and soul of REDuser.

David

Yup - having some real fun here :)

For those slo-mos of snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobile, I shot 5k/29.97 project frame rate/96fps in Varispeed/shutter speed 144th, and ISO 800.

Footage came out excellent...:thumbup1:

Thanks Steve,

I can see how the 29.97 project TIMEBASE would add a some crispness to the slowmo. 800 ISO protects the highlights well.

Couple of questions:
Have you rated at lower ISO's at all?

Have you been able to compare HDR and "regular clips?

Impressions:
To the eye, How are you finding the DR on EPIC vs. R1 MX?

Thanks again. :)

Hey David,

So far, due to the light and subject matter we've been shooting, I've rated at some higher ISO than 800, but not lower yet. As Red has posted, the sweet spot for the sensor is 800, and I'd concur with that.

We're getting ready to shoot some HDR today, but it will take a few days to slow down from the field production schedule we're on and analyze our results more closely.

Same thing with DR - we need time to check through footage. DR of M-X is excellent, as is Epic definitely.

Packing up now for another day of mobile production :)

What's that CF tripod he's using? Looks almost like a stills tripod but it's not a Gitzo or a RRS...

Miller Arrow 55 head, Miller Solo 1505 CF legs (spreaderless). Head is rated for 55 pounds, and I've had 55 pounds on it before - fully loaded Optimo 12x rig. The head action of the Miller 55 head is excellent. The Solo 1505 legs are way strong, rated for over 55 pounds. The whole head/tripod rig weighs just 13.5 pounds - a nice comfortable load for mobile production where I carry my stuff in with a small crew or by myself.

The Canon FD 150-600 f5.6L lens, Epic M, Red Battery and Bomb EVF, setup I used yesterday only weighs 23 pounds - a super easy head load for the Miller 55/ Solo CF legs combo I was using.

Is Ketch Rossi Studios Part of Red Studios ?

As all answered before me Jeffrey, "NO" RED STUDIOS and KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS are entirely and
completely different entities, and even so I would absolutely have to think of be to be fortunate if it
was, I am an Independent FilmMaker Founder and Sole Proprietor, even so they are both Professional
Individuals and Corporations with Interests.

Ketch, I admire you. Thank you and Steve for all the good advice you gave us here on the forum.

Don’t forget you are at 12,000’ high.
Don’t push it.

Andrew

Yes, I agree ... please take good care of yourself Ketch. You mean so much to the community, and I know of all your plans to do help others, so the world really needs to you to be healthy for a long time :)

Then again, all this joy excitement and fresh air could be the best thing that happened for your health in a long time. Just be sure to get plenty of rest, lots of vitamins and eat well (which I'm sure Mrs. Gibby is helping you with) ... best wishes buddy and glad to see you so happy.

Anthony

Thans for the concern and kind words Andrew and Anthony,

we actually went only up to 10,000' ;)

No to worry, other then filling lightheaded at times, it was great, also I am in great Company.

Steve / Ketch
These days are getting better and better.
Three questions:
1. How long is a RED Brick lasting you on EPIC and how many are you going through a day?

2. What DIT setup are you using whilst out in the field?

3. How much footage are you getting on the SSD cards?

Keep up the great work and thanks for all the interaction, BTS, etc

Thanks Steve,

working on a new Photo gallery and BTS Video as there is a bit of a Snow
Storm, so delaying going out today, so lots more fun stuff coming out later today ;)

Do to current Run and Gun, and I really mean that, we are not testing Battery duration,
as far as DIT set up on field, we are using none, just plenty of media to
record on, and we just take care of it when back home at the end of the day.

A DIT or should I say D.A.M. Cart is in the works upon our return to California for the other planned shoots,
so will be able to go in to details then on what we will be using.

And what's new? :-)

;)

Ketch,

Beva molta acqua quando siete nelle montagne.

Il tuo peso diviso per 2 in ounces.

Take care!

Steve. Thanks for the answers.

I love you all. You are good people.
