  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

perfect, i was wondering how fast that would actually be. The bottom grip will be amazing when it comes out. Did you guys get anything amazing today?

Also, maybe jim or jarred could answer this, are all of the cameras going to be shipping with a case like that? my guess is no but, just wondering.
 
Thanks again for all the kind words on this thread for our crew! We had another super-mobile day pushing M8 to the limits. The camera performed flawlessly.

We're now checking out the day's still photos, BTS video, and M8 footage. Its going to take a while - but its great to check through this stuff!

To continue the thread on an upbeat, the bomb is truly "the bomb". I've been wanting to get a peep through it and while we were out this morning, I got to. So crystal clear and sharp. Wow. What you see is what you get...
 
Thanks again Joseph. Also, I'm sure this is in the works but would love to get some shots of Steve shooting in action. I would just love to get a sense of what he means when he says "mobile" and how he holds/handles the camera.

I was wondering if Steve would go with the lighter Canon lenses or opt for PL's. I would love to hear from Steve about the switch and how he feels it will affect him when working alone. Canon ( or nikon) lenses,especially when zooms will do the job, are much lighter. Steve and Ketch know there lenses. Thoughts please.

I work in a very similar way when traveling light. Gitzo CF spreader-less stix and sachtler video 14 head. Love it, very smooth and very light.

I can definitely say that Steve is the True Mobile shooter, and He does prefer a light set
up, and Still lenses, but I will let him jump in and tell you al about it.

Red Canon mount coming soon, and we will definitely get it, as we both have a large
collection of "L" series Canon Glass, Steve also has some of the best Nikon Glass out
there, so He will be getting also the Red Nikon mount for sure.

For Photography work I will take great pleasure on using Canon glass, however I will not personally
use it for Motion Capture, at list not for most of the work I do, for my Cine Style I have a full line of
RED PRO Glass, with the RPP set recently Serviced by Duclos, and Focus Markings added, lenses
are incredibly Sharp and Projector Calibrated, simply beautiful.

Also the recent addition of a Master Prime Set will work very well on our Epic cameras, for Zooms currently
using the RED PRO ZOOMS 17-50, FANTASTIC AND LIGHT WEIGHT, and the 18-85, FANTASTIC but a little
on the heavy side for any hand held work, but a beauty on Sticks, and a perfect Focal range.

Currently looking at adding SFew Angeneux or Optimo Zooms.

Hey Frank,

I've shot with cine lenses a fair amount over my career, but since my EFP style of shooting for the genres I work in requires a high degree of mobility, then weight and bulk are something I avoid as much as possible.

I bought four Red One cameras in 2007 - and only rarely used a PL mount lens with any of them. My entire lens kit for Red One consists of 16 Nikon lenses (mostly zooms), and one stock Canon FD 150-60 f5.6L with a Century PL mount conversion (mount only).

Its been way fun and like old times to be shooting cine lenses this week on M8. The lens kit we have to use is top-drawer - Master Primes, Red Pro Primes, Red Pro Zoom 17-50, and a Ruby 14-24. Ketch owns most of those lenses. None of them are mine.

I also am way impressed by the Red matte box we're testing out. Its very light, strong, and everything fits like it should. Though long ago used to use matte boxes when I shot cine style, I don't own a matte box and almost never use one with Red one. But this Red matte box is my kind of matte box - like I said its light and strong, and not to bulky. I'm way glad we bought it because others who use M8 who need a matte box will be very happy with this one.

For my personal work with Epic, just like with Red One I'll use 35mm still lenses almost exclusively, eye focusing them, and using good quality screw-on lenses. If the Canon mount would have been ready when M8 shipped , besides the PL lenses we're testing out, I would have tested my other three Canon zooms on the camera - 16-25, 24-70, and 70-200. When the Nikon mount is ready I'll look forward to buying that and using my kit of good Nikon zooms. When the Red Electronic Mount and RE zooms are ready I'll definitely buy them and use then extensively.

Ketch is an excellent 35mm still photographer who has traditionally used high-end Canon lenses on his Canon DSLR. But due to the genres he shoots, he uses a lot more primes. His approach to using Red One Epic will be mobile, but lean much more toward cine primes, cine zooms, and matte boxes. The alliance me and Ketch have formed with M8 covers a broad spectrum of shooting styles, and I think that's very cool.

That's what is really cool about Epic. Once all those mounts are available just about anyone who shoots in any style or genre will be able to easily setup the camera how they want or need for what they shoot. Anyone should be happy with this camera...:)

For my work, form follows function, and mobility is king - but also with excellent cinematic images. 35mm still zooms fill those need perfectly for my work...

I always knew you were mobile by nature. Jay's Red 101 video was a good example. I have 7 RPP's and use them when possible but my Canons are so much more mobile when working alone. Will the Epic be capable of using Canon lenses without the complicated PL to Canon mount transfer. I have the Birger but have not used it since recieving my RPPs. Please keep us up to date.

Absolutely...the new Red Canon mount is a smart mount. It is able to use the electronic features of your Canon lenses. I don't have one yet for M8, but I'll really look forward to getting one when they're ready.

On Epic and the changeable lens Scarlet the changing of a mount takes about 1 minute, then a quick adjustment of the flange focal distance by adjusting the movable sensor block - then you're ready to shoot with that mount. I'll have all for of the new mounts (PL, Canon, Nikon, Red Electronic) and change them out whenever I need to use the lenses for them.

Flexibility, scalability, and utility - that's what Epic and Scarlet are al about. Fun times...:)
 
I still can't believe how so blessed I am. Not just to be with one of the 1st Epics but, more importantly, to be surrounded by these special people who know so much. This has gotta be the best film school I could go to.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Steve and Ketch for opening their arms wide open for me. For those who haven't met them, you are truly missing out and I hope you meet them in person someday. Last April, I first met them in person and they couldn't be any kinder or better teacher/mentor than what they have been to me...

and despite of your young age, you are demonstrating Thru talent, and we
absolutely Love having you here with us, your videos speak for themselves
of your work.

Every one that knows me, knows that I am passionate not only about what I
do but how I do it, and like it documented as much as possible, as well
because my self love the BTS, and I always promised my self that when
shooting I would always have a Professional Videographer and a
Photographer for the BTS.

Its been great having you here Joseph. You do have a great attitude for learning the business. In this industry (and in life) learning is a never-ending process...it never stops if you want to rise to your highest potential.

Your good attitude, passion to learn, and excellent behind the scenes video shooting and editing have seriously enhanced our team effort this week...good stuff dude!

Its also been way cool having Michael Thornton here at the Gibby Ranch contributing his industry knowledge, tech expertise, and data wrangling skills.

Then there's Pam, who has been doing some excellent behind the scenes still photography, mothering the crew with home cooked meals, and keeping us laughing. Thanks Pam!

Hey Hrovje, howzit going?

Don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a side mounting option for the LCD in the works. Meanwhile, yesterday I used the Bomb EVF all day, dumb side mounted via an ET clamp and Red Arm, to a bottom 15mm rod in the ET Hybrid plate. It worked great, and if I'd have want to yesterday I could have side mounted the LCD the same way. That's the way I've been sidemounting the Red 5" LCD on Red One. Yesterday Ketch posted some shots of my camera setup on the M8 thread in Recon.

Being a skateboarder you'll appreciate what we're shooting today. We're at a beautiful mountain resort all day, in 12,000' mountains, shooting snowboarding and skiing in 5k/96fps. Another fun day at "the office"...:)
