  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Great Gatsby Trailer

Baz Luhrmann is without a doubt an artist and visionary. A very rare bird, especially in big Hollywood filmmaking of today. I'm probably in the very small group of people, that actually liked Australia over Moulin Rouge. His works always looked glorious on 35mm film and as far as I can see in the available clips and trailers, The Great Gatsby looks at least as good.

Kind of off on a tangent, but when I see Dicaprio in this trailer I see a future Charles Foster Kane.

I'm really looking forward to it. The approach is definitely going to be challenging for fans of the book (I'm a huge fan), but I think (hope) it may work. I have to admit to thinking the Redford version was flat, it failed to line up with the vivid scenes created in my mind by Fitzgerald's imagery. How do you convey (in media) the hyperbolic lifestyles of that era when most of us frame the 20's as black and white with scratchy mono audio? I think reframing with a contemporary soundtrack... and pushing a lush saturated view of the era may break us out of our mental images and in the end do a better job of conveying the picture Fitzgerald was painting. We shall see (soon).

Interesting thought Bob. I feel just the opposite. There is NOTHING about Gatsby's world that is even remotely attractive to me. Full of heartache, unfaithfulness, shallowness and ultimately... well I won't spoil it. It strikes me that Fitzgerald was trying to paint a picture of what was wrong with his culture, a culture that has gotten even more desperate since. Like Solomon, Gatsby had it all and yet, he had nothing. Reading the book left me feeling numb. But Baz is an artist for sure.
 
Ha ha. Watch it again with the sound off. Makes me want to get on my best suit and jump into that convertible.

First, congratulations team Red for supporting this great film. One of the best films of the year, and in my opinion a big, big candidate for this year's Best cinematography - and best lead actor in Di Caprio: its about time he gets a nomination and a win. Congratulations, Jim, Jarred and the Red team. This film is a great cinematic achievement. Any chance this one was mastered in 4K?


Here's a more developed review I posted in another thread, but think its worth sharing here:

"Saw it. Loved it. A fine return to form from Baz Luhrmann after "Australia".

People complain about the soundtrack and about certain over the top visuals- common on Luhrmann's films. The thing is, this is HIS film, HIS world. The story is about the characters, the 1920'ies is a "background" to it. The music "connects" the main themes of the film with our current times. Lavish parties in the 20'ies, bordels exist in our days, probably in different forms, but the music "connects" the times.

Loved the dialogue, the acting- Di Caprio and Mcguire where flawless, and LOVED the visuals. This is the best looking 3D Red shot film so far. Loved the skin tones, loved the detail, the colours. Excellent cinematography and editing. Not a big 3D fan, by the way. I can count on my hand the number of 3D films that impressed me- or that 3D made any sense or improved the film: Avatar, Hugo, Prometheus and The Great Gatsby. Its that good. The 3D added to the film. Could it be shot without it and be as compelling? Lurhmann could pull it off, sure. But the 3D actually adds to the film here.

All in all, make sure you're ready to accept Baz Luhrmann's "cinematic world" at the beginning. If you do, you'll be on a cinematic journey full of intense emotions. Go see it!"
 
Hey Sergio, the post was finished at 2.5K. I'm trying not to imagine painting/projecting digital matte paintings for 4K finish. Every film project that we have worked on that was shot on Epic has finished at 2560. We can always pull the 4K/5K r3d for the extra definition with VFX though.
