  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Great Gatsby Trailer

Hey Sergio, the post was finished at 2.5K. I'm trying not to imagine painting/projecting digital matte paintings for 4K finish. Every film project that we have worked on that was shot on Epic has finished at 2560. We can always pull the 4K/5K r3d for the extra definition with VFX though.

Would love to see it at full 2.5 res directly from post!

I loved the look but can't say I liked the modern music. I give credit for trying something new (not necessarily fresh now that he's done it a few times) but it becomes distracting.

Also, I'm not a fan of the dialog. He's also used the typewriter storyteller trick already (so why do it again and not choose another method). The story was entertaining but a bit slow. I think the worst part was the choice of having a voiceover. It does possibly clean up issues but it is truly a last resort in my opinion. Voiceover seem to work well when the thoughts of the person is so slanted from reality (which the audience sees) allowing it to be fun and to poke fun at the situations.

Anyhow, good acting. Visually stunning and beautiful. Not a fan of 3d and even chose to take off the glasses a few times just to enjoy the brightness and colour.

Still, enjoyable if you don't expect something more then just fun.
Don't expect this to be titanic.

That's Baz. He comes from the point of view of "make it approachable to a new generation." I think he does it quite well. Not like A Knight's Tale, where the medieval crowd was chanting "We Will Rock You."

Romeo And Juliet was where he did this to perfection. How many 14 year olds could sit through Shakespeare and be happy on the other side?

And I recently rewatched Moulin Rouge and it's still think it's a masterpiece. Love the music and visuals!

Bring on the spectical I say! :001_cool:

LOVED this film. One thing I noticed and I wanted to see if anyone else did. I saw the 2D version and there were some weird shots were the skin tones looked funky. As in normal skin tones with patches of blotchy yellow hues. Almost as if someone pulled a bad key in the secondary. At first I thought it was just part of the old 3 strip process look.

Anyone else notice this?

I loved it too and also saw exactly the same phenomena you're describing. My partner described it as poorly applied fake tan.

The cinema has 4K Sony digital projectors, so I'm sure the presentation was as good as could be expected. Some of the skin tones, one shot of Daisy in particular, looked very washed out, whereas everyone else in the same shot looked fine. I was debating with myself whether that was an intentional treatment of her character. Regardless, it had the effect of pulling me out of the story rather than drawing me in.

On a similar note, one of my bug-bears with 3D is the cut-out look that the depth separation gives. In the 2D version of this film, it looked to me that some of the 'in-depth' elements were made even more sharp via the compositing process. Some of the keys/rotos on the actors were so tight that there was no edge detail whatsoever, resulting in the same cut-out look in the 2D version.

That said, I felt that the high points of the film, both in terms of storytelling and visuals far outweighed these personal niggles.

EXACTLY. I saw it on Sony 4k projectors as well. Even went a 2nd time thinking it could have been a calibration issue.

That being said i really did enjoy the movie. There were some beautifully lit and executed scenes. The party scenes in particular were incredible.

Saw it tonight in 2D.

What a great film!
Great classic story.
Great actors.
Great direction and DOP.
