  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Great Gatsby Trailer

One of my favourite directors. Moulin Rouge is one of my top 10 favourite movies. Can't wait to see this and how another brilliant director uses the 3rd dimension properly and not only as a gimmick. Scorcese raised the bar with Hugo, I expect this film to do for the Epic what Hugo did for the Alexa!

EDIT- Posted without watching the trailer. After seeing it I have to say I expect nothing short of brilliance from this film. Don't understand the December 25th date, isn't this putting it out of the Oscar race? Is it going to run in any festivals?

I despised ( I know, strong word! ) the book when I had to read it in high school, but I am very excited to see the movie. I will see anything Luhrman does.

And the LOOK of this! Holy crap!

I see they took a page out of the Public Enemies playbook and employed the use of some 360 degree shutter work. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I do like it! Hard to say without viewing the whole film, but looks like it was used for a specific emotional purpose in the film. I wonder how that ill read in 3D... Seems to go in the opposite direction than Cameron and Jackson are pushing for to reduce motion blur.

looks awesome. anyone know if we're looking at final grades, or do they typically do specific grades just for a trailer release?

if i didn't know the story, i'm not sure i would get a lot out of the trailer besides the fact that it's beautiful and dramatic... seems like it would be a good idea to market to people that don't read, as that seems to be the majority of the population :(

course, the first trailer is probably catering to the crowd that's been following it and is already interested.

the real question is, where's the stereo version...?

No 360˚ shutter was used on the entire film. What you're seeing is a post retiming for the trailer.

Really amazing images.

Too bad they used wrong era music with really messed up auto-tune to piss people off.

Exactly what I meant. I loved the book, this seems to have missed the point and has hyped it in order to sell. Anyway, I am compelled to see it...looks too good, sounds like...

Baz Luhrman often re-images his "worlds". He's an expressionistic director, and the "world" his characters live in are more of an expression of his vision of the era- a "romantic" memory and portrait (that's how I see it). One should not expect realism and era accuracy in his films, but if the story, the characters, the music all work together to create a unique "world" and "experience" which is a Baz Luhrmann film. That's why his films are so polarizing, in a way: either you accept this creative liberty and approach from Luhrmann or you will probably walk out in disgust by the lack of the historical (time) accuracy and representation of the real world in his films. A good comparison to what Baz does with history or with "historical landscape" is what Tarantino did with Inglorious Basterds! Tarantino "changed" history in his film, because he assumed it as his "world", and in his "world", in his film, in his "story", that was the way things happened. Same goes to Luhrmann, but not in such a provocative sense!

EDIT- Ketch, I'm sure that going 3D will make your film get a much bigger attention in the European world. It can have the potential to revolutionize European film. Good Choice!

I was gonna a something about that, glad to hear its just for the trailer. Can't stand slow mo smudges.. Besides that it looks really amazing!

Interesting. Thanks for the information! Probably the only person who's a little saddened by this. Seemed like a good fit to me with the stylized CGI at the head of the trailer. Oh well. Are you able to share the specs of the show? Typical 24 fps 180/172 degree shutter? What about Redcode and Resolution/aspect?

I have a feeling this one is going to be very big..

Shot on Epic in 3D ( the way they have implemented 3D is phenomenal )

After BAZ did AUSTRALIA... I thought he had lost it for ever. Thats was just contrived pooo....

This new movie trailer for great Gatsby looks amazing!!!... I'm so hoping for a BAZ Luhrmann resurrection. He's a crazy genius.

PS: Ill be going to the 2D version. :)) I just watched avengers in 2d and 3d the week before... 2d was much easier, Crisper, brighter, more colourful and sharper to watch. IMHO

The movie was shot 5KFF at RC4:1. 23.976 with 172.8 degree shutter. Looks were set by Brook on his cart and I processed the entire movie on my cart in RCX 501. Special thanks go out to Jim, Jarred, Deanan and Matt Yaeger for making it all possible.

I thought the same thing, he must be pretty nervous after this whole Australia debacle, if the Great Gatsby does as badly as Australia, not sure who's gonna give him funding in the future for his quirky epic productions.

the only thing that kept me in the theatre watching the 3D version was Scarlet Johansons butt in that black leather outfit...god bless costume designers with a sense for drama ^^

Man, December is turning out to be an Epic month. The film looks gorgeous, and surprised to hear Bono sing a new version of "Love is Blindness" from Achtung Baby is icing on the cake.

Love it love it love it !
I'm a big fan of mister Luhruman's work.
The image in this trailer is absolutely... Yummi ! Crisp, a lovely color grading, nice texture... I'm in !
