The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Big thanks to you and your team at Gates for everything you do for this industry John!

I first met Jim in 2006 when RED made a big splash at NAB. Since that first meeting it has been, and continues to be an honor collaborating with such a dedicated, inspired team. Recognition of Gates as an Approved Third Party Accessory is humbling, and a celebration.

Thanks to our many friends and colleagues at RED for everything.

Congrats!

Gates and its staff have always been a worthy and honorable competitor.

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback about the secure jumping hight with the housing. At the end, the Director decided not to do it :-)

Thanks,

I've jumped with my camera on every dive I've ever done. This is one reason a small housing is important to me.

FreshDV did this a few years ago... Had they asked, I'd have said not to. The exact same port and housing closures are in your system.

UPDATE: That frame grab was white balanced at the sand, without any lights. The resulting WB was 9106K @ -79.678 tint, showing the lateral bands.
Minuts latter I did a second white balance mesure, this time with lights on (and at a slate). The resulting WB was 8406K @ -43.267 tint, and the lateral color bands were gone!!! (see the second frame grab)

So, it looks like that a heavier white balance (that is needed without lights) is causing the issue. With lights on, there is no need for a such heavier WB and no color bands appear.

UPDATE 2: To further complicate de subject, the WB of the image in my original post (with the Magic Filter in the lens) was 6960K @ -86.569, which is the lowest Kelvin of all three (due to the filter presence) but have the highest tint shift (maybe this is what is causing the color bands)? But then why just at the edges? Could it be due to the angle of light projected by this fisheye lens and a combination of the STD OLPF characteristics?

Thanks for taking the time to share - this is definitely valuable info. I too have had very good luck with Sigma 15 on a variety of DSLR systems where this has not been an issue.

RT47 External Monitor for RED TOUCH 4.7" LCD

RT47 External Monitor for RED TOUCH 4.7" LCD

I just posted details of the new RT47 on Facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/gates.underwaterproducts/

The RT47 completes a trio of External Monitors for DEEP WEAPON and Pro Action housings. It is interchangeable / plug and play with RP5 (RED PRO 5" LCD) and RT7 (RED TOUCH 7" LCD).

Compact, low profile. A glove fit. And neutrally buoyant, so your rig stays balanced, not top heavy.

RT47 includes Gates proprietary Pass-Through cable design. No connectors between camera and LCD. Robust, reliable. The cable is also manufactured to our spec with a tough outer jacket and water block material inside. Should the worst happen -- a cut cable -- water is inhibited from flowing through the inside. Your investment protected.

Incredible news John! I can't wait to try my 5" monitor with the Pro Action. This will make a huge difference nailing focus in difficult conditions.

BIGGER IS BETTER
....I have been using the 7" monitor for a few years now and love it. I can never go back to my 4.7" monitor now.
...now that more years have passed, the eyes are not as good as they used to be...BUT, more importantly, pulling off proper focus at 4k, 6k and 8k is a challenge. And a larger display sure helps with addition of focus tools on that same larger display. In fact i'd probably by a 12" display if Gates were to make them....I had the pleasure of using a 12" display while using the Gates 3d rig....and what a great tool that was...

....when is the 9" housing coming ?

PS: i have a 4.7" monitor housing and monitor to sell if anyone needs....i've kept one as a spare for years and now it's just an extra weight in my travel kit

I want to pull the trigger on a 7" touch/RT7, but keep reading threads about ongoing issues with that monitor. Any insights?

I can say with personal experience that I have jumped in to the water on numerous occasions from a height of around 3 metres, holding on to a Gates HVX200 housing, courtesy of some of the more adventurous dive sites we have in Sydney and not a single drop of water inside :)

Can anyone recommend a very good place to rent a housing here in the States that will be pretty affordable? SPL Housing said they charge $500/day, and only make housings for the 4.7" monitor (I only have a 5" and 7" Touch, so I'd have to pay even more funds for a 4.7" rental).

I have a personal project I'm filming in Chicago, and just have some scenes where the camera would be partially submerged focusing on a character floating on a raft.

I have:
RED Weapon MG
5" and 7" monitor (can use either)
Sidekick
Wooden Camera Cable-less v-mount
Dynacore and Switronix Hyperslim batteries

Thank you!

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen,

Any of you who are in So. Cal, would consider participating on a 8k end-to-end project that needs u/w cinematography that has probably 5 ~ 7 minutes of u/w screen time? We are doing this pilot (25 to 30 minutes max) on spec. A few companies had shown interest including one of the largest studios and the largest online streaming services. Primary camera at this time is our Epic-W (this may change if we are privileged to get access to a Weapon Helium [hopefully, we'll thank RED and Jarred for this]). If you have your own that would be awesome!

Both the director and the DP are NAUI certified divers. The director is a NAUI Rescue diver & the DP is a NAUI Instructor alumni.

We prefer a Gates housing but we'll work with whatever your housing preference.

Please PM me or email us at your convenience.

Please contact the director of this pilot Abbey Abeynayake (my daughter) @ abbey@abstractdigitalcinema.com or me the DP @ neil@abstractdigitalcinema.com

Thank you ladies & gentlemen,

Neil

Brendan:

Give me a call: Our Rental housing accommodates DSMC2 and can be setup for either the 4.7 inch or 5 inch touch. (We can even support the old Redone LCD with the backplate from the Redone housing)

We have a RED lemo adapter but will have to see if it fits with the cable , if not we can include my 4.7 with a pogo to pogo cable if you don't have one of the pogo to lemo cables.

I'll work with you to get a price that fits your budget. (one of my local customers used our Scarlet-W for that very same raft shot just a few weeks ago and it's nice because our PVC housing is about 8 pounds positive without the lead ballast weight.) 954-937-6600.

All,

Some advice requested please.

On a NetFlix shoot that requires over/under work, my go-to for those shots has always been raw potato rubbed over the dome port to sluice water droplets, got this amazing tip from Mark Thorpe in Bali a while back, works a charm. Not sure though about the DP, getting some pretty raw comments about lugging tatties around on a professional shoot, before I get the 'French Fry' call sign appended to my function on set, does anyone know if a 'pro product' containing professional potato juice exists?

Or some other solution?

Cheers,

Tom
