  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Has anyone used Fool Control in their housing via hard wire?
......
Does it mean you have to have Red link Bridge or whatever its called installed on the rear of your camera for DMSC1 bodies when hardwired? I dont have the space for that in my box...

I was really hoping this was just something that connected to my camera without any accessories and would be my new best friend but it seems its a bit more than that. Still a killer app!!

Will let users of the system chime in but you do not need a REDLink module since this will only provide wifi access... For harwired you can use DSMC ethernet port directly into a macbook or into a gig-e router to use with iOS app...

On DSMC2 you either need the upcoming sdi jetpack for GIG-E connector or can use some cheap ethernet to CTRL (rs232) inside the housing with ethernet going back to the surface (up to 150m, longer distance can be achieved with fiber optic like Gates / John used for the Alura project).

Sounds super interesting Mikael,

Especially with EF lenses. Controlling Iris and focus from the surface would be fun. Motion mount too! With the Alex family there is access to the WCU-4 control but this is also a hardwire and not as feature rich as Fool Control, as far as I can tell.

repeating myself here but i was kind of hoping that my assistant could be on the side of the pool or boat and as long as I was on the surface he could control my camera settings via my phone wirelessly as sometimes being tethered sucks but seems I would need that wifi thing which is bulky!

How does Redmote communicate with my camera remotely? Could we not hijack that system, only make it better???

I have both Foolcontrol OSX and iOS on a DSMC1 underwater system. I had a marine cabling company make up a water blocked wet connector Cat5e ethernet cable which goes straight into the Ethernet port in the back of the camera. I works like a charm. I used it exclusively on a project with penguins where they would not even allow us near them on rebreather

Hi all,

Apologize if I'm returning to the same subject again.

Regarding the use of the H2O OLPF underwater, is it still needed for the Weapon? Until now I've used the Standard OLPF (in temperate waters) so don't have any real comparation to decide if I really need to buy it or not.
My question is, with the new 6K Weapon and new Color Scince in it, is there a setting that can avoid the use of the H2O OLPF altogether or is it always the best option, regardless water clarity and using (or not) underwater lighting? Reading some older posts, I got the impression that the H2O was made for the Epic cameras, but I can be wrong.

According to Graeme post (in 06/09/2015) the color with the standard OLPF and dragon sensor looks really good...!

Thanks for any feedback.

Best Regards,

Sorry to insist, but anyone with the Weapon can compare colors using the standard and H2O OLPF, while using the new color science? With the Weapon do you feel there is still the need to use the H2O to get rid of the magenta issue? Any comparative shoots?

Thank you very much!

Best Regards,

Hi Rui,

I do not know exactly how it will be the performance of H2O filter with the Weapon. But I do not think it's worse than the Dragon.

I love the blues with the H2O filter. All this video is made with the Dragon and H2O filter with and without lights OrcaLights.

I hope you serve something my comments... :-)

Thanks for your comments and for the teaser, Rafa.
Yes the blues look good indeed. But it would be nice if someone have a side by side comparation of standard vs H2O. Or at least if someone had made extensive tests with both. Anyone?

Since the Weapon uses the Dargon sensor, I guess it should not be any different from Epic Drangon in this regard, am I correct?

On a side note, I wonder if all this issue about the uw excessive magenta (without H2O OLPF) is only a problem if we only use the RCX to color correct. But how about if one uses the DaVinci Resolve, will it not be easy to remove that unwanted magenta from the water without affecting the other colors/subjects?

I do have a watch this space regarding OLPF's for underwater work. Love him or hate him you cannot deny that Pawel is a clever chap, he has just given me to test an OLPF which supposedly has fantastic colour science and also has been designed to improve corner sharpness when shooting through a dome. I have a job on this week and next then head to Tonga for two weeks which I will test the OLPF and will have comparison shots with my Zeiss 15mm....It looses just less than a stop in the blue channel but next to nothing in the red channel so could be really nice for colour balancing, it could also allow for lenses which would struggle to be used underwater due to close focus distance to be used without diopters.

and also has been designed to improve corner sharpness when shooting through a dome.

That's pretty neat. Since he has apparently figured out a way to defy physics I have some other ideas he should tackle.

Now I'm confused. The inability of a lens to be used behind a dome port is due to is not-so-short focus distance in the virtual image created by the dome. To solve the problem one can add diopters, increase the dome's distance or use a bigger dome. I don't see how a filter can solve this.

Dear All,

Here is a short film I recently shoot (i.e. UW shoots) for San Miguel and Discovery channel I thought some of you Red Users might like. Short gig but Neptune was generous.

Shoot on Epic X, Gates housing.

Best fishes, Nuno Sá.

buncha folks shooting some great stuff (especially with those h20 OLPFs in the wild & updated color science), as i promised about two years ago (got caught up in some other stuff, my b) here's a start on some basic training for working with difficult underwater r3d files in post; to be continued...

subject to peer review here & i'll make some adjustments (and i'm sorry i can't remember whose image we're looking at, please remind me!)

Hi All,

Anyone have used the BigBlue vídeo lights? Reliable? Customer support? Are they completly according to the specs, namely in running time and power output (lumen)?
In general how are them compared to other well known brands, like for example Light & Motion?

Thanks!

Do you guys know of a rental house in Atlanta for underwater equipment? specifically cases or splash bags

Hey Paul, welcome back! Thanks for the info, color grading UW stuff is difficult, at best, may have a project just for you mate. Looking forward to more tutorials!

Rui, Big Blue lights are reliable, so much so I have found customer service unnecessary, never had a problem with them. Big batts to take on an airliner though, caution there. Also, please verify CRI, they don't publish color specific data in that regard, although the stuff I have shot has worked out very well. See attached pic for a general idea of color render with these lights, in this case, BB 25000 lumens X 2, Anemone shot in Sudanese Red Sea, for Cousteau project currently in post production.

Jared, Graeme, if Pawel promises to be a good sport, and all of the Oz guys are top shelf in this respect, can we invite him back? He really is brilliant, and I think the entire underwater Red community would benefit from his input, that is a proof-of-concept conversation that needs to happen.

Best

From the outside looking in, I think this is a great idea. I think on any forum, tone can be easily misread and people quite easily get their knickers in a knot. People should not be banned unless they are really offensive, harassing or similar. What everyone needs to remember is you guys are all pretty passionate about what you do underwater with your varying products and when someone has an idea or something new to add, and is willing to provide evidence as to why this idea might work as well or even better than the current technology it should be embraced. In regards to Pawel, he copped a lot of aggression (As I read it) and yet many underwater housing manufacturers followed suit and ended up modifying their designs to accept Nikonos glass. It may be old tech, with those lenses but it took a one man operation to invest his time, effort and personal money into engineering his housing to work with Red cameras and those old lenses. That kind of thing should be embraced. He could have kept it all to himself and let his images do the talking but I guess he was proud and excited and happy to share his findings. It could be seen as promotion as he does sell his housing but who isnt promoting their own product any chance they get?

I say he should be invited back. He may not want to bother but its the right thing for the community to do.

i think if any banned member apologizes at least privately and definitely purely they should at least tentatively be given seventy times seven chances...

i've said some fairly arrogant and rude or annoying things in the past, my apologies. people can change and otherwise sometimes people just have bad days or get rubbed the wrong way and start taking out their frustrations unduly online.

there is a place for maintaining order and the 'rules' written and unwritten of the forum, like respect for one another and respect for the red team.

Hey Fellow UW shooters:

Tom Campbell is selling a couple of his Keldan lamps. The batteries are getting a tad tired, so you'd need to get a couple of new ones, but we're still getting a dive's worth of burn time on these.

This has actually been a slow Nauticam design project, we have had Forged Carbon Weapon #26 since August. This has given us lots of time to refine, field test, and improve the housing. This is a camera specific design, which allowed us to further reduce size and weight (to 5.5kg) from our Epic LT housing, and improve ergonomics. We believe that a dedicated, camera specific underwater housing design offers the ultimate user experience and ergonomics.

Just before NAB we finished the monitor back for DSMC2 REDTOUCH 4.7, which I expect will be a popular configuration. The form factor is perfect for surface swimming, free diving, and other situations where low drag is important. Even if a primary top mounted monitor is used, redundancy is a good thing, and these four assignable keys come in really handy.

RPV_6597.jpg

I find myself continuously perplexed by the LT range.

I thought the Weapon LT did not offer the Red Touch window at the rear of the housing. Is this actually an Epic LT housing? Or has there been some development going on?
