  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

hi rudy I have OLD AQUAVIDEO HOUSING WITH BIRGER MOUNT...IT WORKeD BUT HUGE..I HAVE ALINE ON A OLD GATEs RED HOUSING IN CANADA FOR 3500.00..CAN YOU BEAT THAT..HOWS YOURS SETUP FOR WHAT LENSES......SAD REALLY I JUST SOLD 2 HOUSING AND CAMERAS FOR 2500.00 FOR CAMERA.HOUSING..GATES AND A AMPHIBICO FX1 SYSTEM...ZERO MARKET FOR OLD STUFF I GUESS..kozmikunderwater@gmail.com....416-705-4174 cell

Thinking about switching to V1, it lets in more light. There is a waiting list to do that though. Also, there were rumors of a dedicated u/w OLPF, have not heard anything recently.

Hi Nuno -- This is a known problem. It is inconsistent and unpredictable. Try Johnny's suggestions, please let me know the result. Also try manually setting the frequency channel, that sometimes helps with consistent connection.

I can't reveal details right now, but a wired Epic-REDMOTE solution is in the works, and will eliminate the problem. Stay tuned to this forum and your emails....

Only verrrrry anoing set back so far is problems with the REDMOTE. So far it happen twice: it will simply loose connection and go besurcs. Both the times after it lost communication it would not power on or off and just not respond to commands. The second time it happen before the dive as I was assembling the camera with the REDMOTE fully charged: wouldn´t power off and would recognise the camera or commands. Planned to drop the dive but realised the parameters of the last footage where ok so jumped on to the boat anyway to just shoot as it was (ISO 800, 25 Fps, 180º). Got to the dive site powered up the camera and the REDMOTE woke up, connected and worked fine and has done ever since. But wondering when it will go crazy next.

It's funny you say that John, I was shooting with a guy recently that had actually done that with his redmote personally and hard wired it to the Epic, worked like a charm. That being sad I have never had any issues with mine.

Opinions requested on the Nikon 14mm and 16mm Fisheye for underwater.

Thx.

Thanks once again Johnny,

Yes I using the RED Epic x Mysterium x in a Gates Deep Gragon housing.

I will try what you suggested but what is really anoing is that the Redmote lost the connection both times in the middle of a dive after working fine for the first 45 min and then simply would´t power off to reset or recognise any commands. But the advice you gave me of connecting it to the camera might work as the previous times I had to let it drain the battery to reboot and start working again. Anyway very anoint for a professional camera but I am upgrading firmware and testing today so there is the possibility that is the issue... and truth is thats the first thing they say on the users manual - upgrade firmware ;-)

I am based in the Azores where most dives are in high seas and smallish boats so reopening housing to try to solve the issue usually isn´t an option.

Also trying the black shading tip today ;-)

All the best, Nuno.

I have a question to anyone who has made the upgrade to dragon are you shooting with V1 or V2 of the OLPF. My camera is at red at the moment and I am wondering if V1 wouldn't be better for underwater work.

I have V2 and like Tom I am thinking of switching V1. Seems like most of my work lately has been in dark waters with limited vis and I could use a boost in low light capability. Actually looking forward to the modular OLPF so I can test them both out, and any others that are suited to UW. I am curious if any of the bubble blowers have had the opportunity to shoot with both OLPF versions and what differences they have noticed.

Just so you know Nuno, no one housing manufacturer has the ultimate solution, many have tried, many have failed. We go round and round here on this thread.

Really depends on what you want to capture.

Johnny has his specific shots, but he can't do it all, too many critters out there, no one single shooter can claim it for themselves.

??? - Tom, did i miss something? I hope i did not come across offensive in my post about blackshading and redmote procedure. I don't believe i claimed anything other than a good work practice which i follow and is just my way of keeping myself in line and from making too many mistakes. if i missed something about your post, please feel free to let me know...

No, no, not at all Johnny, was just commenting on the general difficulties of shooting underwater, how many different scenarios require different techniques, the different solutIons that various manufacturers have, and so on. Sorry for the wording, have deleted the post.

underwater OLPF is still in development...
The Modular OLPF kit is going to be amazing. Really looking forward to all of you having the technical and creative freedoms that it will introduce.

Gates acrilic dome reflectioins, any solution? (Looks like I only come here with problems, hope I can contribute with some more positive news soon ;-)
So after 3-4 weeks of getting using the Gates Deep Dragon housing and the Red Epic Mysterium X the 2 final major prolems are:
1 - Reflections of the dome when shooting against the sun - I have been doing a lot of near surface stuff (Blue Sharks, Devil Rays, turtles ect...) and am just starting tomorrow withy the Sperm Whales and I would say about 25% of my clips are not usable because of a circular reflection that shows up as soon as I am shooting in the direction of the sun. This is anoing as hell and very unexpected as I would not guess a top notch housing to have these kind of "ruining your footage" problem. I wrote to John at Gates (fast replie as always) and he says only the glass domes have a Anti-reflection treatment. I am guessing there must be some kind of solution of a material you can cover the inside of the dome with to prevent reflections??? Other wise I guess no one would buy an acrylic dome that would ruin so many clips?
2 - The redmote losing connection and "freezing" issue. - It is happening in about 20-30% of my dives and the only thing that works is what Johnny described - open the housing - connect redmote to camera (physicaly) and it restarts. Gates is working on a solution for this that will be very appreciated.
The rest works fine but both of these issues can and will very easily ruin "the" clip after a lot of investment in time, boats, dives etc...

Nuno: welcome to the wide wide world of u/w shooting where there is NO perfect 100% solution. Sometimes you must compromise with either equipment or also know the limitations of each piece of gear. I'll see if i can appropriately address your two questions from my perspective and knowledge.

Acrylic dome port: This is a known limitation of acrylic dome ports. You can minimize reflections by taking a marker or using black tape and covering up all reflective areas of your camera...such as tape over anything shiny inside of it. Also you can make an cover (i have used a black velvet material) to cover everything inside of your housing and only leave the lens exposed.
>>>>However, you will NEVER eliminate all of the reflections you can get from the inside of the optics at just the right angle and time. They will show up. Another thing i've done is take a black marker and color the inside of the lens--any WHITE letter writing or rings from screw on threads--those that might be silver from wearing of any screw on filters.
.....Why would anyone buy an acrylic dome port? You can buy usually 2 or 3 of them for the price of a glass port. You can also easily buff out your acrylic port in the field---but scratch your glass port and you better have a backup at a very hefty $$$. And face it....most work is not shot into the sun directly up.....but those shots that are are far better with the a glass dome port with Anti-reflective coating___ONLY on the inside of the dome.

....is there a material for inside coating of acrylic ports....yes, but none that last like those on glass ports.

As for loosing connection with your redmote---sounds like you better get a new one from RED or they need to send you a kit to change out your antenna. Mine works 95% of the time and if it is not working...i can usually just re-connect it. ALSO---try going into the camera menu and PAIRING your redmote---something that i find works very well.....

Lastly, there may be a new tether coming to connect your redmote to the camera....John at Gates may know more.
