  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

The Dragon was offered as a free upgrade for a short period if you bought an Epic-X (or M) and the invoice was higher than $50K. When they dropped the Epic price, they also cancelled this free upgrade-path.
but true, all underwater Epics/Scarlets should get free upgrades ;-)

well, that sux, I purchased my M at full price!!!

I think the whole thing started as a result of some undocumented species of mushrooms that grow near Johnny's house in Baja...

Just a quick share of the latest teaser for our documentary series, this one from our trip to the caves and springs in Northern Florida: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFVPXO_pOK4

Well then I'll just have to head on over to Baja to try some mushroom soup!!!

Great stuff Rudi!!! Wish I was able to work with you on that, maybe next time. Those caves are amazing!!!

....I look forward to your videos Rudi.....i think your wife is getting even better at presenting. Are these on any public or cable tv in FL? Are you making them for television with sponsorship then?

....oh, and these are the mushrooms that fell off the truck...not sure what truck, but they are scattered all over the road time to time somewhat like what we call out on the water the floating square grooper...known to most as 20kg of marijuana in sealed bags....

See attached photos of what we know as "floating grouper" They are quite common here and if we run into them, best to keep moving. This from many years ago we picked up 3 pales not knowing if we would find cash or what....we of course (as you can see) tossed them over the boat....

I completely understand Jim.
Same goes for me: I bought the Epic-X at $38K... a few weeks before they drastically dropped the price.
It's a different angle I know, but it did make me swallow a couple of times ;-)

I often come across these floating bricks in the sea when out on my boat for a week or two trip. Well, often enough to say it's not uncommon. We like to open them up, then toss them just to see the reaction on friend's faces...most can't believe we tossed some $30k to $50k bag.....but not much you can do with it as the consequences far outweigh any upside. I have a photo some place surfacing in a cave with a 26' panga anchored off at four corners full of bags of cocain. Got a photo and got the hell out of there.

Well.. Today was interesting :)

This is only very small amount of what happened yet was the most exciting. I did not manage to capture it flying at me only after it broke off from me and went to my buddy.

There's a TV show in that Johnny!

BTW: Love the avatar Ross

And, the nomination for 2014 Oscar Award, shot in breathtaking standard definition 3D using the biggest underwater housing in the World, goes to "Dope Afloat" by Jonny Friday....

sorry, had a really good day today :)

Couldn't you put it in your scrubber Johnny? LOL!

Would anyone know where to get nitrox in Cuba? Either premixed or diving oxygen so I can mix my own?
Thanks!

I have just gotten it from welders....Need to be sure they don't have a mix of something else in it though. But it's available.

What is the purity of the O2 available from welders Johnny?

Well in the USA, Mexico and any place ive ever travelled the welders O2 tanks are all filled with same exact O2 as the hospital bottles...Only difference with the hospital bottles is that they are of course not as bad looking and also have a back-flow device so as to keep from back-flowing into the system (this at our local station in La Paz & same in San Diego)...Not sure how it would be different anyplace else. But O2 here is just all the same...and bottles are what to be concerned about...if say they have acetylene in them or something else.

Thanks all for the comments on the springs video, a few RED shots in there but really impossible to take that big housing into some of the restrictions there. Gotta say, once again, the resolution of the RED is something special but man, in terms of color rendition, it cannot compare to the breathtaking colors of the wimpy EX-1 with its 3-chip design. It was really tough to match the RED shots to the EX-1, go figure.

Jim, it was my loss not having you there with us, I do hope we can eventually work together and I can afford to bring you on.

I like those "square groupers" Johnny, and having found a couple of those myself and almost having gotten killed by everybody else on the boat when I threw them back in the water, somebody told me that although monetizing them was not only illegal but a big pain, all I had to do was pay my crew with little wads of the substance every time :-) Yeah, because that's the type of crew I want tending my mixes and housings, right?

Anyway, as I had told some of my friends here earlier, Sony is serious about a full frame 4K camera, and it is coming out this year. Here's a look from NAB:

http://www.eoshd.com/content/10004/...re-camera-range-based-around-full-frame-dslrs

For what I know, the camera will be 4K and will record onboard to XAVC compressed 4K but it will have the 3G-SDI spigot enabled so it can be used with either the Sony RAW recorder or even the new Convergent Design recorder. This camera will be on the same quality level as the F-5, but actually, will sell cheaper as a way to entice full frame users. Later on, they plan on releasing a higher end version comparable to the F55 that will use the same 36 mp sensor as the Nikon D800. Sony is determined to make a push for FF in their future, as a way to blaze a trail no other company seems interested on. For me, personally, I cannot overstate how important this is (and I suspect our dear Pawel will like it too) as I am a firm believer in that format. I love RED but I am convinced that the implementation used for the MX sensor for the Epic is not really good for underwater, so I'm waiting for the Dragon with baited breath to see if the new color science solves the Epic issues underwater. If it does, well, it may be a toss for me between a Dragon and one of the FF Sonys. Still, just as I will remain a Red user for a long time to come, I think I will jump ship to Full Frame for all of my underwater stuff, and that road seems to be paved by Sony as of now. Anyway, just rambling out loud...
