The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

....Oh, and before I forget, DO NOT USE ANY OXYGEN IN CUBA!!!!!!!!!

BTW: Love the avatar Ross

I think he pointed the business end of the camera in the opposite direction and pressed the Record button. Very clever!

Rudi, what problems you had with O2 there? I know a few folks that routinely use pure o2 there. They don't have it filled by someone mind you....they do this themselves with my friend's brother. I suspect this might be what you mean though...not to have any unknown source fill o2 for you? There's plenty of pure o2 around.

Thanks Frazier,

I'm still overwhelmed with what happened.

With huge number of impressive and innovative products brought by large multi-national companies and shown at NAB 2013 like Canon EOS C300 (finalist) or Canon EOS C500 (also finalist), or Blackmagic Cinema Camera (finalist) and Sony NEX-FS700 (another finalist), or F55, F65 or even the RED Dragon Epic... it was an underwater housing designed by a small Tasmanian company: DeepX and 3Deep that was selected as the Winner in Innovation.

Yes, I'm very proud with such prestigious recognition and happy to bring another choice to fellow underwater film makers.

I created these housings to make much better quality films. That's my passion. I never expected to win awards for designing equipment!

Johnny,

Agree with you I do, in that there is plenty of pure of O2 all around, it is one of the easiest gases to "manufacture", the process basically having remained unchanged for 70-80 years. BUT, and there's always a big BUT in places like Cuba (btw, Cuba will help you appreciate Mexico :-) standards, procedures, rules and the like mean absolutely nothing, cylinders get filled up to 60% capacity and diluted with other stuff to which I can only refer to as shit, pardon my French, or tanks that get used for a bunch of other gases get reused for O2 without ever getting completely drained, etc, etc, etc. You know, back in 1986, when Castro signed a deal with the French government for "cooperation" on different subject, Comex, the French firm that is probably the largest commercial diving entity in the world, came to Cuba to explore new diving frontiers, or that's what they called it. They were testing some new Heliox tables that were considered "tres agressif" (very aggressive) and they felt like testing it first on us Cubans, so down to 200 meters/660 ft we went, and many of us got bent, including yours truly. BUT, we came in contact with the concept of Nitrox and pure Oxygen and a group of us, the ones that were not just diving to get chicks at the resorts, fell profoundly in love with it, and from that day on, tried to manufacture our own nitrox in Cuba. All I can tell you is that the gases were so contaminated, from a group of six of us, five got severely damaged from "pure" O2 that was canned in the same tanks they packed argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide (yep), etc, etc, etc. We basically had to quit our experiments with gases and go back to air, where we were diving down the wall at Playa Giron (Alfredo must know this place) on air, all the way down to 380 ft, one dive per day, hundreds of times a year, on a single tank and an old SOS computer. Anyway, I digress... So hey, while you may be able to find somebody who understands the vital importance of clean, pure gases, I would not trust the standards and the adherence to said standards, on places like Cuba. It's like eating Chinese food in China, a lottery....

Pawel,

That's all great, but what I can wish for you is that this recognition translates into hard, tangible sales, many of them. The rest, including the accolades, means a lot less than an ever inflating check book, plain and simple. And Black Magic, Sony and Canon have plenty of that, so that's what I wish for you.

You've had a fascinating dive career Rudi, be fun to hear more about it over a bottle of Cuban rum...

And congrats from me as well Pawel.

Rudi, if there is lack of standards just ship full O2 bottles to Cuba :emote_22_yikes: [/dark humor]

Had a look at the BLACKMAGIC 2.5 soon to be 4k camera for $4ooo.oo by July they claim..EQUINOX housing build a neet little housing for it..about the size of a backpack.. airplane size might be a option in the near future for overweight.customs hassles and lower budgets any thoughts

Framerate and dynamic range is a totally different league. It's (still) a totally different market.
Just my 2c!

my .01---i have my doubts about equinox housing. Those guys are truly wonderful and have a different market, but building housings for this pro gear is just at a different level. Last one i saw was a R1 housing in Cancun with fogging issues and finally a flood. Oh...here's an oldy....i had loaned the guys there my Z1U to build a housing around many many moons ago and they gave me a housing...nothing lined up and it came at a cost with a huge 15lb or 20lb weight....took some manipulating for me to get things working....but in the end had a few leaks and it was more of a pain for me...I though i might put my small dog in the housing and take her for a dive...but never made it.....
That said, i hope things have changed...because damn they sure are some good fellas there.

As for BM camera....like Michael says---FPS & Dynamic range which are pretty big deals depending on the shoot however. I find most that hire RED cameras for tv shoots, never utilize the full capability of them. Meaning they don't put in the extra work in post. if thinking of a new camera for Doc work, i'd give far more consideration to Sony F55.....i'm thinking a LOT about getting one for that purpose....and tv.

Jim, the Rouge fits in to a standard airline roller bag, I carried one all over the skies recently without a problem, fit in the overhead bin of even the small commuter jets. So, if stealth is what you need, run n' gun u/w shots...

Yep, for documentary work, it might be a good choice, specially downscaled to 1080p. A DSLR size housing should do for it, so that is also enticing. I very much like the colorimetry of the camera and the way it holds highlights, but the lack of OLPF means jagged edges that become very noticeable on bigger size screens. For stuff destined for the small screen though, this might be a serious contender, we have to see.

I am also actually excited about the pocket camera, a 1080p sensor with 13 stops and for $995. If a small enough housing is built, I might get a couple and replace my GoPros with it, and likewise, for non critical aerials, this sounds like a great choice when teamed with one the Phantom $600 quadcopters. A RAW aerial rig for $1.600, not bat at all.

Congratulations Pawel. The news even made it into a two paragraph article in my local newspaper here in QLD last Friday. I recognized your name and remembered you from that amazing picture of the sea-dragon you posted around here somewhere. Best of luck getting the technology into as many hands as possible and here's to seeing a whole lot more beautiful footage as a result. :cheers2:

Thank you, Les, greatly appreciated.

Yes, much of the mainstream media in Australia picked up the news after the press release from the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings, which was very nice.

My favourite (and a bit technical) article was published by Thorsten Hoffman in 3D Content Hub:

http://3dcontentblog.wordpress.com/...volutionary-new-housings-the-deepx-and-3deep/

I'm very happy! And, the release of the Dragon sensor makes me even more excited because I will actually be able to take full advantage of this increase in resolution!

Thanks Michael!

I'm still trying to figure out how we managed to out-fox Sony, Canon, Arri and others in this race.
It's not that there is a shortage of innovative products at NAB :)

..Have you checked out the 0z government grants and tax breaks available for innovative products?

Yes, I have been so busy working on this and other projects that I had no time to look into this. If you have any pointers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings from sunny Tassie wilderness - the world's centre of camera equipment innovation!
