  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The First Komodo Out in the Wild

Phil is there any difference between your Angelbird CFast cards and Arri certified ones? Can i use regular Cfast cards from Angelbird on Arri cameras?

I hear they are same except the Arri version has a chip inside to say its certified.

I don't even think there's a chip in there that differentiates it, but I'll ping the bird and ask. It would be good to know. As far as I know it was mainly certification to denote which media people should be purchasing which happened around the same time of the Lexar fiasco.

Trying to figure out the Redcode RAW bitrates based on settings. Maybe I missed some details in the thread. Here's what I figure at the moment:

- Uncompressed 6K 17:9 16-bit 24 fps is 795 MB/s
- Phil's sample footage in HQ 6K 17:9 16-bit is 264.38 MB/s (let's say 265MB/s), which makes almost exactly 3:1
- On a 1TB CFast card formatted to be about 930GB, that's 59.89 mins (let's say 60 min)
- If MQ gets you 70 mins, then the ratio would be 3.5:1, which doesn't make sense.

I would think that MQ would be like 6:1 and LQ like 12:1

Any data to support/refute this?

Yeah the MQ didn't make sense to me either. I'm hoping for the same:

HQ = 3:1
MQ = 6:1
LQ = 10:1

Thanks Phil..Im planning to buy Komodo and sure i would like to use CFast cards on all the platforms that i can.

Do you guys think Komodo will have a 3rd party Flushed V-Mount Battery adapter attached to the Sony Dual lock system so that it looks as part of the brain camera and not detached as shown on Phil's pictures???

That would be dope with the Mini Red Bricks and the GDU batteries...

Cheers RED Fam!!!

Cant wait for my Komodo to come...

... the Sony Dual lock system ...

Canon NOT Sony!!!

The one Phil showed is much more versatile, but I can see how something flush with the body may appeal for a more compact setup.
Perhaps someone will make it happen.

Does anyone have the power draw specs on komodo? How many watts per hour on standby vs recording?

*snicker* Don't ask me about what I"m using in the photos below. Yet.

I've been tested lots of gear now for about the last 90 days, gah I can't believe that, but as is the way of the pandemic. Some stuff I can show, some I cannot. This week a few more announcements will allow for breaking of the embargo. Next week too!

As of this second I haven't noticed a truly discernible power draw difference between rolling and not. If it is there, it's slight. A 98Wh batter gets you about 4 hours of runtime. Bare in mind this is before Stormtroopers and Vaders enter the fray.

Two quickies tonight.

I am indeed testing and essentially announcing the SmallHD Focus SDI Pro. Was allowed to finally chat about it publicly. It is similar to the current Focus lineup, but has a couple MAJOR differences that will be relevant to those who ride on the backs of Komodos:

I've been also further exploring getting sound into this little bad boy. Today's exercise in creative rigging was the Sonosax M2D2, which is a tidy and powerful pream/mixer. No recording features, so similar in some ways to the Beachtek stuff, but a significantly upgrade in quality and features. The audio in my first sample clip was fed through the line out of a Sound Devices Mix-Pre 10 II. I've tested the Internal Mic as well as general on board microphones. Some of those could use a decent clean boost in gain, Komodo does that, but a dedicated one allows for far more freedom.

Outside of that, I hope to show the breakout I/O box shortly. It allows for jamming and sending of Timecode and other good things.

Oh, and in the above two workflows I'm exploring off the beaten path anamorphic setups. Using the SmallHD to Desqueeze to monitor as well as a frame guide as I'm using the full 6K 17:9 image from Komodo. Useful to roll this way for reframing.

Looks sick Phil. Can't wait to see more. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing Phil!!!
Your insight is always valuable and appreciated!
Needless to say I scoured the internet looking for any mention of a SmallHD Focus Pro but there's no mention, yet.
Hopefully they will open preorders soon.

Interested to find out how bright and heavy it is.

Thoughts on this vs the Portkeys BM5...?

sorry Phil maybe I lost the thread on the prores format ..
Can you tell me the prores formats available?
2k, 4k max hq? at all frame rates? or is limited.

Hello Phil,

Thanks a million for all the Komodo testing and posting about said camera. Very gratifying and exciting indeed. I hope you and those close to you are fairing ok given today's climate of uncertainty. I had a simple tech question about the Komodo. I think I saw this posted before in another thread but it got lost in the ether. With the beta version you are using for said tests, what are the available frame rates when shooting .r3d at various resolutions? Thank you, in advance, for your time.

Here's what Phil said before:

Yep. ProRes is in there. In HQ and 422 for both 4K and 2K resolutions. I'll dig into it a bit, but it looks like Komodo properly scales the footage to the appropriate delivery res. Nice for fast turnaround work. I prefer the REDCODE RAW Workflow, but when you need to be super damn fast and deliver right then and there, here you go. It is an either or situation, so you pick REDCODE RAW or ProRes and go from there.

I would like some clarification though because DSMC2 does 422 HQ at 4K, but you can get 4444 XQ in 2K. I wonder if Komodo can do the same or if it's just doing 422 HQ max in all resolutions. I'm also curious to know where the ProRes framerate limitations happen as well. In DSMC2, we could only ever get 30 fps in 4K ProRes and 120 in 2K ProRes. If Komodo can do 4K prores above 30 that's good news for feeding 6K at 40 and 5K at 48 into it.

Nice setup Phil. Thanks for the picture.

I was wondering if it could be set horizontally on the right side of the camera?

Thank you and thank you Patrick. Yes it absolutely can, but in this case I needed the ribs to mount a handle. Horizontal or vertical orientation or facing towards or upwards is doable, upwards might be nice as the cables run downwards. In this case since it's an arca qr situation, it's more about how you orientate the plate.

I have this setup mounted to the Wooden Camera top handle which interestingly can be fully taken off as it's quick release as well. Basically allowing for me to slide the M2D2, mic, and monitor off in one go.
