  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The First Komodo Out in the Wild

This doesn't work... I tried the file in red cine X and premiere and doesn't work... Are you able to upload the original file? I tried downloading the original but always got stuck at 99.9%

I am re-uploading to my main site as well as a shorter itty bitty one because apparently not everybody "needs a long clip".

Software stuff.

- Current REDCINE-X Pro
- Current Resolve
- Beta Adobe Premiere Pro (you likely don't have this or access to it..... just yet)

Jason,

Sorry, I deleted the original after I extracted the R3D files from it. I believe Mike and I are using Redcine-X 52.0.49422 which I believe supports Komodo Footage.

Spent a bunch of time playing with the footage this evening, and it looks fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to share it, and congratulations on breaking Dropbox ;)

Sorry Phil, you’re a meme now.

Phil,

If this helps,

After I downloaded the 26 GB file and tried to unzip it, It tried to break up the video into about 7 or 8 R3D files. Of the 7 or 8, I was only able to get 4 and the other 3 or 4 R3D files gave me a "Checksum Error" at about 98% completion. So of the 4 R3Ds that did unzip successfully, below is a 9 second clip that's 2.33GB if anyone just wanted to try that until you're able to upload your original file on another website or server.

Thanks Rand!

Trust me. When I decided to do this at 3am, yes this was shot in darkness, I knew what I was getting into. I committed hard to provide plenty of meme-able expressions.

But like seriously. Have you heard about the ocean?!

Yes! The ocean is amazing and we should definitely investigate it and the alien creatures within!

Seriously though, thanks for putting this together and uploading it.

Jeff, I have to say, with a post count of 16,962, I am a bit surprised. :-)

I got to the Phil download party late and look forward to the followup party.

If it's alright with Phil (feel free to delete this comment if not), I've trimmed it down to the last 18 seconds of the clip to keep it under 5 GB and re-uploaded it. For those that are chomping at the bit, this will help tide them over until you get the full upload figured out.

In order to avoid any bandwidth/request limitations as others have had with their Dropbox links breaking, I've uploaded it to Zippyshare. However, Zippyshare has a 500MB file size limit. So in order to unzip this, you'll have to use 7zip or some other archive extractor to piece it together. Make sure you have all 10 parts and then unzip the first file (001) and it will automatically unpack the rest.

In the folder you'll find the trimmed .r3d as well as the full length .wav audio track. To re-sync these, just line up the endpoints of the two clips.

I saw a video with the menu system on the komodo, and the UI was very slow to respond when pressed (and sometimes it wasn't responding to the same way we'd expect). I understand that this is pre-production, but coming from the software development world myself, not having a more spiffy touch operation by this time in the game is a little bit concerning. The benchmark in terms of usability right now is modern smartphones, that's the spiffiness people expect from touchscreens. But from what I saw in that video, the performance was as if from a 2009 non-Apple smartphone. I've never seen a product having a bad touchscreen experience in the past and that got really better with firmware updates. Some did, but not as much as I needed them to be. I hope RED devotes time on this issue, even if it might be difficult to optimize it drastically (I consider RED a hardware company mostly).

RED actually did just that on DSMC2 bodies about a year or two ago. My camera got a huge QoL improvement when they beefed up the snappiness of the menu system.

Interestingly I think the touch screen is actually pretty damn responsive, but I will say one thing about it. You can operate purely through touch on the top screen or you can use the buttons, or much more excitingly, a combination of the two interfaces. You have to keep in mind that this camera is brand spanking new and most people at the moment are really unfamiliar with it despite the menus being simplified and responsive.

After a week of beating on the camera I use the touch and buttons and I'm zipping in and out pretty fast. Interestingly I have tested everything with thick gloves as well to see if you can do that. Something I had to deal with when working with NASA and the ISS a couple years back was that general concept via a fairly robust manual.

Oh, and for those up at night here, I've exported a 9 second trim of the longer clip I uploaded due to some not being able to grab the full 30GB one. This one is 2.5GB:
