  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The 007 Thread

Well... Now that the pixel-peeping drama is over...

It's nice to see Mark posted some shots of the Optimo zooms on the Epic. I'm kinda surprised that the 24-290 and 17-80 have to be as wide as he's saying to get full 5K coverage.

Yeah, well that was always one of the selling points of RPPs is that they'd be better for Epic! I'd love to start renting mine out more.

I notice Mark talks about an "adaptor" to get 5k coverage. Must be some sort of magnifier optical block. What do you imagine the light loss will be?

I just cropped and slowed down the Offhollywood EPIC 007 test from 96 fps to 192 fps (-50%) in Motion

that was before output at REDlogFilm in RCX, then color corected using GenArts Sapphire Film Effect and add music background in FCP.

Negative Film: Kodak_5218: Kodak Vision2 500T, tungsten light balanced, fine grain.

Print Film: Kodak_2383: Kodak VISION Color Print Film, rich blacks.

Music by DJ Pippi: Ibiza A Touch of Class 1, song 12: Ghost of Dalt.

Best to watch @ full screen in LOOP mode of your player.

Not cool, unless you asked Mark and let him approve it before you posted it.

Even if you did, the title of the video is misleading.

Its quite possible that this could result in less R3D's being posted.

I hope I am wrong and this was posted with Marks blessing (and for that matter Red's too)

I think you are over dramatising the situation Ivan. The r3D's were put up for us to play with. What is wrong with seeing what it looks like when a post motion effect is added. Sanjin clearly states in the description in vimeo what he did, and here on Reduser. Its no different that really crushing the blacks or heavily manipulating the image in another way.

Should not need much magnification. Full aperture S35 has a 30.8mm diagonal. The 5120x2700 sensor area on Epic is a 31.26mm diagonal. So it seems to reason it would only need to enlarge by about 1.5%, maybe 2% at most.

That said, there could be a decent market for a 1.02X PL magnifier to make use of a lot of S35 lenses that just don't quite cover. Seems as if Mark is on top of that one.

Edit> Mark says 1/3 stop.

I think it's fine - he's clearly saying how he manipulated the speed/image.

Well thats all right then,

I still think the the title on vimeo:- "RED EPIC 007 @ 192 fps test" is misleading, this can easily result in someone telling a Cameraman/DOP that the Epic shoots 192fps

Thanks Mark.

I'm sure you give us to download that file that we can play with it later...

Just noticed on the pictures Mark posted that "BOND" seems to be engraved on the side by the SSD Module.

Jim / Jarred will this be an option we can pay for to have the name engraved on the EPIC-X? Also will the red screws also be an option that we can pay for on the EPIX-X?

Thanks

Steve

Was that shot on Red 01, or Epic? It's REALLY slick either way.

I was wondering, is it just me or does the Epic footage seem to have even better color definition than Red MX?

Something, also, that no one mentions is that the Epic will give you a LARGER sensor, not just more resolution. In Red One, the outer portions of the MX sensor are not used to create the image. A larger sensor means that lens sharpness is better optimized, among other things you guys all well know. Also, people worry about data throughput, but you will be able to shoot at 4K just like now, and without HDR, and so it will be possible to use up exactly the same data you do now, if ever you wish this for long interviews or long remote shoots (i.e. wilderness) where media recycling is not possible for several days, but in a smaller package with, it seems, even better color.

Btw, next week I'm getting a helicopter that can carry GH2 with 14mm lens (500gr) for shooting a short aerials.

It's gonna be a a lot of fun.

Stay tuned.

Sanjin... I'm sure many will have interest about the GH2 shoot. Everyone can look forward to your post on DVXuser. BTW... have you looked recently at the title of this thread?

Jim

Jim,

I'm sorry and have got it!!!

Mark, don't forget to test the coverage on the 18mm RPP. At only $3,000 for a Battle-Tested lens, it has to be the best deal on glass anywhere. It is actually the only lens I own at the moment so I'm very curious and hoping the different 5K modes are all covered.

I think the thread is working.

I like this whole idea of 007 thread and then, The secondary thread called "The...(insert thread name here) Thread

It's cut down on noise and made for worthwhile discussion with plenty of thread views.

Im not sure, but maybe this can be a way forward, for a little while.

David.
