  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The 007 Thread

I agree with what your seeing. I think the color temperature (white balance) is off.
I thought so too. So I tried doing a white balance in redcineX on the teeth. No matter what I do the teeth always end up having a skin tone to them...do you think maybe its the lights that he used? He did mention that they were using halogen lights.

My guess is that the color temp of the lights was very warm. In a case like this I'll just let my eyes and experience (result of trial/error) guide me.

*Also, I should point out that I did a quick CC on my MacBook Pro, so I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is the same as what you see.

Hehe, I don't even trust that my CC looks like what I think it looks like and maybe the color is off a bit there too.

can someone point me to the R3D Files, i think i got lost not following a week.

thanks
Manuel

The teeth should not be white, nor should the whites of eyes. I don't have the extensive film/video experience many of you have, but I do have an extensive background in color science. I haven't seen the R3Ds yet (but will as soon as I get back home), but images y'all are posting and the grades look great, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Maybe Mark will throw a grey card into the background next time to provide more information to the pixel peepers.

The issue looks like a REDCINE scaling problem. I'll talk to the boys and see what is happening. Good to find this now.

Is it possible that this is simply the limit of resolution coming into play? Lloyd Chambers writes about this with the Nikon D3s here: NikonD3s/resolution-limits. Given that it's pretty much only red in that bit of the frame, it seems possible. At 5K the resolution should be only a bit higher than the resolution of the D3s.

Just a thought.

While I have to admit, I am a bit of a pixel peeper. Its only because I think Red is absolutely a revolution in ever way possible. And I hope that this camera alone changes people's minds on converting to 100% digital. To me it's the only way to go. But, I was just watching Inside Man, and i was looking at the intro monologue with Clive Owen. I know that teeth and eye's are not perfectly white. But there is a very large difference between skin tone and teeth. And its very apparent in that scene. I noticed in my CC trials I was unable to reproduce such a distinguishable difference. and noticed the same issues in other peoples CC. To me it seemed like an issue that can be discussed and addressed, if it is indeed an issue....

I wasn't criticizing the question at all, just providing an answer—sorry if it came off rudely. The colours you get out of most cameras and the types of lighting setups for most scenes (not to mention post-processing/grading) paint a deceptive picture. 99.9% of people would be very surprised to see the actual color of teeth and eyes (in most situations) isolated and out of context. I know this from experience… not just general experience with colour, but specifically this teeth/whites-of-eyes issue as well.

As for producing an image where the teeth and whites of eyes are in fact "white" (chroma, not luma), I imagine if you had different models in a different environment it might be easier to do. The point I'm trying to make, though, is that I don't think anything is wrong with the camera, and in fact I think the images it is capable of producing are more natural than anything else I've seen. Again, sorry if it seemed I was criticizing. I am a pixel peeper myself. :D

Thanks for sharing Mark.

These 5.1K frame grabs are SICKENING! Shit is near IMAX quality.

Did anybody else notice this? This is from OffHollywood's posted A001_R016_0119IO.0000117F.R3D

This is Full debayer 1:1 crop. No scaling of any kind.

The left side of the frame has a similar case where her hair is in front of another light but of different colour and seems to be OK.

Could this be a codec weakness with red colours?

Looks strange...

Export it to tiff or DPX and open in Photoshop... no jaggies. Looks like this is internal Redcine-X monitoring issue

I always knew EPIC-X/S would be my dream camera....

BUT HOT DAMN THAT'S SOME DETAIL! :drool5::drool5::drool5:

Okay, get these out there ASAP! :incazzato:

This is interesting but the crop i posted was from a Tiff also. Didn't try it in Photoshop though.

Also, there was no scaling in REDCINE-X as the monitoring was done at 100% zoom.

I have no Photoshop on my Mac but i have on my PC. I will do some more testing.
