  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Testing new native RF mount 1.8x Anamorpic lens

No response to my request email when I sent it

The 40mm T2.0 Anamorphic 1.8x in native RF mount is now available for sale!

Will Cover RED Ranger 7K in 6:5 mode and most other s35mm RF mount cameras with a RED to RF mount (not sure if these mounts are available yet) , and Cover Komodo in 6K 16:9 mode when cropping the left and right sides properly for a 2.39:1 coverage. (when Komodo firmware allows for an Anamorphic mode, no post cropping will be needed).

If Komodo could get to 48p using the cropped 4:3 center of the sensor at 6K this lens would be a match made in heaven!

As far as I know sensor height is the only factor determining frame rates. This COULD be different on a global shutter sensor, but I doubt it.

If you look at DSMC2, no anamorphic option gives you more frames. Shooting spherical and widescreen (2.39) does.

I would love to see something similar, I just don't believe it's possible.

Hey all,

That RF lens looks like a really good option! My only tough choice is deciding between the PL since it’ll work on all my cameras or buying a Komodo and this RF lens for a similar price

Reached out to Vazen and inquired about EF mount line in the $3k-$4k range. Hoping they come up with something for folks using Kippertie RF/EF Revolva. $8k for the 85mm is too high. Anyone else hoping to see this?

Why go with RF mount? The mount is not sturdy enough so you will likly need rods and lens suport. Feels easier / better then to use a suported PL mount, no?

I have one more annoying request - probably waaaay unrealistic for price point but...

Like many folks, I mostly shoot Arri. I sometimes shoot RED. The last thing I directed that got us into festivals was on a Canon C300 mk2. Then for scouting and personal stuff I own Sony and Fuji DSLRs. The only mount I haven't used is L-mount... which ironically has the best anamorphic support!

So:

1. Could they just pick some adaptable mount (PL or EF or I guess even M mount) so we can adapt to many cameras? Unless this doesn't work optically...

2. Any chance of getting some kind of deal with them where we can get mounts changed? Even if it's not user-swappable, can they do it at factory, or just give us a deal if you trade in our set? Though I guess the realities of industrial mass production may make this unfeasible.

User swappable mounts would be ideal!

But of course PL or EF Mount is impractical for their lens designs, but if Lecia M Mount could be done then that would be awesome! As then all the Mirrorless Mounts (including any new ones that yet to be announced?) would instantly be compatible with an easy simple dumb adapter.

And the Leica M Mount is already quite a shallow lens mount, thus I'd be holding out home that Vazen could make their lenses compatible with Leica M Mount? (unlike EF or PL Mount, which are too deep)

And finally, yes we already brought it up to them about Sony E-mount options, and mentioned some design options too. They agree, i told them moving forward they need to stop locking themselves into the M4/3 mount, since optically they cover the center of s35mm perfectly. Sony is a BIG player in cinema cameras and E-Mount is a no brainer to sell more lenses.

How about support for Sony FZ Mount?

Vazen emailed me saying a new PL 50 T2.1 is coming in 2 weeks. In that email they said RF would not be as sharp as PL -could anyone weigh in to advise how this would be?

The price? I think their PL versions are 2.5x the cost of the mirrorless ones (they're also FF)... ~$3250 vs $8k. That said, it'd be great if they could make S35 PLs at a cost closer to mirrorless versions (like $4k instead of $8k).

Maybe being FF vs. S35 means it's using the best part/centre of the glass (and/or it handles the edges better just by virtue of the larger coverage)? Also pretty sure 50mm is typically an easier focal length to design, so that might be part of it too (not so much the mount, but the focal length makes it their sharpest yet). You think they'd respond if you asked them directly (it certainly seems counterintuitive)?

I will put it to them.

That said, the one Orion versus Vazen video I saw was PL FF so it was using best glass against Orion glass...some said the test was flawed and didn’t produce the best result. But methodology seemed understandable to me...?

I love how the vazen 40mm renders but went for the FF ones to be more future proof...
