  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tattoo 2(k)...

Sorry for chiming in on this so late... However I do have a question though regarding the bar scene.
There is very noticeable flickering going on in the key of most close ups. I'm not referring to the refraction light effect but the high frequency strobing that's going on.
It is pretty apparent at around 5min28sec. Does this relate to inproper shutter speeds or what am I seeing here?

I wouldn't expect such a mistake from experienced people doing quality work so probably I am missing something else that's causing this. Is it intentional?

I would be really interested to hear David Devlin talk about this. My guess is he's busy shooting some awesome stuff instead of hanging around here.
Well, looks like I will have to wait a bit before I can get an answer in this old'ish thread

Hey Steve,

thanks for pointing out that Link - will check that out later.
I was aware that he does post here. I was mentioning him because I saw he had already commented on this thread.
However, I am really interested to hear about the strobing in the key light as described in my earlier post above.

Hi Joris...for some reason the links go bad...I corrected it last night..but it's off again today I see.
Just go back to any of devlin's posts and click on his name and the option to "View Forum Posts" will show up.
I reread his 4 tattoo posts and there's alot of good detailed info. on the shoot in them. So search them out.

yeah, those don't really answer my question though. The closest I got was the mention of a flickerbox which confuses me even more since this isn't a candle or campfire effect I'm seeing. Its pretty much like shooting at wrong shutter speed as I said earlier. Guess I'll just have to PM David and ask him directly

the flickering is a magic gadget shadow maker controlling a 575w hpl lamp in a source four leko
because of the scr circuit in the device and the hpl lamp, it makes a slight high frequency strobe effect.
i like it. I use it all the time. it jumps out a bit to the viewer. if I want to tone it down, I add a ghost standard tungsten light to the circuit.
in lincoln there is a scene with ddl and tad beside the fireplace and it has a similar effect, but since it's cut using more medium shots, it's less noticeable. what you are seeing is the harmonic of the bulb filament. I like it. a general audience will know something is going on but won't know what it is.

when we shot tattoo, I asked jim and jarred if they wanted me to stay away from this effect because someone will surely blame the camera . jim said 'shoot it however you feel' they were truly the best to work with. it would be great to make a dragon film with bill directing, jim and jarred producing.

While we're on this thread, it would be great to see a 4K REDRAY distribution of the Tattoo short… Just sayin'

Hi David loved your work on Tattoo and have just seen Tropico which i really enjoyed.

OK... will try and give you REDRAY guys a link tomorrow.

Sweet!!

Thanks, Jarred!

Ask for it @ RED Germany in Berlin, next time you're there ;) I know I will....

Oh man. This made my night. Just knocked out a calibration on this display and Tattoo looks great. Clearly the way it's meant to be shown.
