  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh's " The Knick " Shot on Dragon

Yes, 7" RED LCDs.

I have never had any issues with RED 7" on Epics so not sure what your experience is/was for you to say "don't work well"?

I'm still begging for RED to make a 1920 x 1080 7" OLED Touchcreen (without the insane hinge). But, once we all start attaching the Switchblade-M and rockin' the iTouch / iPhone app ... maybe they should make touchscreen and non touchscreen versions.

That would be sweet.

I had the 7" with red one and loved it, but sold it after upgrading to epic as it displayed weird banding our of the epic.
I will 2nd 3rd 4th adinfinitum a 7" 1080 display. Doesn't need to be touch. Just 1080 and really thin. (iPad mini...)

I'll 5th the need for a quality 7" display. Especially with the side controller coming out this fall. No touch, just focus on an awesome display!

Hi Mark,

Check above, I had the same experience with two different 7" LCDs which used to work wonderfully with the RED ONE but on EPICs they showed heavy banding, rendering them unusable.

I thought the old 7" LCDs were not compatible with EPICs anymore.
Seems I was wrong?

I gotta be honest - I have never noticed any banding on 7" and not had any complaints of that - that said - MOST people do use the 5" - so ... I will take a closer look tomorrow and post back on this thread if I see any difference.

Thanks Mark!

That was the reason I sold off my trusted RED 7" monitor, I would have loved to use it with the +1 Module. It was a fantastic monitor on the RED ONE.

Perhaps some 7" LCDs work well on the EPIC, some don't.

To be honest, I love the 5" Touch LCD!

Let us know what you find about the 7"

Just watched the Pilot. Fun to see a BBC'esque show made in the US. Loved the lighting and grade etc. but not so much the HH camera work.
Def plan on seeing more of the show :)
Super speeds seemed to cover 6k very well, only noticed vignetting a few times, and it looked cool anyway.

On the 7" monitor note. Maybe newer monitors don't have the banding issue...?

I just tested two 7" LCDs - they are pretty damn old - not newer units - and I see no banding on Dragon.

The 7" LCD's work great, they have better resolution than the 5" and they aren't as clumsy big as the 9". I think the 7" is perfect for the Epic.
The only thing more perfect would be, as mentioned, a 7" fullHD or 3K touch screen.

Precisely, but 3K would be even better for focusing, I mean, you can see the difference on an Iphone with the retina display.

So was listening to NPR on the drive home from the Austin Airport today and they had the writer, creator and tech advisor on the show talking about it's creation. The writer specifically made mention of "he uses this camera called the Dragon" and went on to rant about how great it was because they wanted that low light look. Just thought I'd share.

There is a decent write-up about The Knick in Artforum. Written by Amy Taubin.

Quote: "There are gorgeous images in The Knick, but more exciting, they are composed and edited to keep the mind as well as the senses alive. Shot on multiple locations in New York, the period detail is not simply decorative but speaks to basic issues of power, money, science, the body and its mortality. Soderbergh shot almost the entire series hand-holding the RED Dragon, currently the most low-light sensitive high-end digital movie camera."
