  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh's " The Knick " Shot on Dragon

...that said, HBO isn't in the habit of making gimmicky shows, so it'll be interesting to see how The Knick develops over the first season.

+1 on that. So much beauty in the world and I have to see stomachs sliced open etc. It gets your attention but what you lose is way more important than what you win at the end. To me the better the director the worst it is in these cases as the main object / idea at the end can be told in a much better way.

I watched the premiere last night, and was totally drawn in. The tone is so earnest/deadpan, you don't notice the surgeries...as much. Also, the show is mercilessly optimistic. Amidst the squalor and disease of 1900, the lead doctor is trying...under brutal conditions...to prolong patients lives and invent new procedures. I was completely seduced by the show's tone and mission. Very, very cool. And Clive Owen is amazing.
 
Yeah I mean Clive Owen did well, and the show did maintain my attention the entire episode... I'm just comparing it to shows like Entourage and Game of Thrones (which is also really violent, but not so... realistic/non-glamourized?) To be honest, the doctor trying to prolong patients lives is marred by the fact that he's blatantly experimenting on people... But I'm guessing that's where a lot of drama is going to come in. Music was goooood.

I do find it ironic that when people shoot super shallow with a 5D or something, the pundits say it's 'gimmicky' and 'flash in the pan', but when Soderbergh does it, it's totally legit (I seem to recall him saying something like, 'I shoot wide open because it looks so much more cinematic' in a Side Effects or Haywire article.) Same with Fincher and House of Cards (which I think is shot wide open at t1.3 too)... I'd say both Soderbergh and Fincher make some of the best looking RED footage out there (and Soderbergh sometimes does it with Natural/Practical lighting).
 
Brutal, but I couldn't look away. I blame the excellent cinematography most ;)
 
Viewed episode 1 a moment ago, and loved it through and through. The show looks fantastic, and I love the choice Soderbergh made music-wise; resulted in an eerie, almost creepy atmosphere. Skintones did not call for attention which means they were quite alright. (Unfortunately can't say the same for The Last Ship, also shot on Dragon, afaik.)

This show looks fantastic, the Dragon works fast and efficient, lots of coverage, jib, dolly, steadi, sticks all in the same scene. No time for DIT, just slam 10 pages a day and dump the drives, do it all over again.
 
great first episode. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The promos didn't really do the show justice.

Shot almost entirely wide open at T1.3 for cinematic depth (they often ND'd on interiors).

No DIT. No monitors on set with the exception on the 7" RED on-board for operator/ACs and only TWO 17" SONY OLED's (one for each AC to pull focus via wireless video via Teradek Bolt Pro's)

Really enjoyed the first episode. Beautiful images captured by Señor Dragon (congrats RED) and a series with a lot of potential. Clive Owen is also outstanding IMMO.
 
Saw it on demand last night. I paid attention to the low light scenes (and there were plenty) and I was impressed. Show looks awesome, but cast is great. Looking forward to more episodes.

Thanks for the info.

Are you sure 7" RED LCD on board and not 9" (or 5")?

In my experience, the old 7" LCDs don't work well with Epics…

P.S. Lenses like the Zeiss Superspeeds or the Canon K35 Superspeeds (which I like even better but I'm probably biased) are simply gorgeous on the Dragon sensor.

Yes, 7" RED LCDs.

I have never had any issues with RED 7" on Epics so not sure what your experience is/was for you to say "don't work well"?

I'm still begging for RED to make a 1920 x 1080 7" OLED Touchcreen (without the insane hinge). But, once we all start attaching the Switchblade-M and rockin' the iTouch / iPhone app ... maybe they should make touchscreen and non touchscreen versions.
