  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steadicam Air

It was designed and engineered by the genius Jarred Land and the somewhat sometime smart cinematographer Francis Kenny, ASC. Two years in the making but it's been field testing for 6 months under the most rigorous conditions and I honestly feel you'll love it. Like anything there is a small learning curve. But it allows for freedom which reduces response time. More later and call me anytime. Francis Kenny, ASC. 000-000-000

Cheers Francis. I'm looking forward to this a whole bunch. I'll give you a ring next week if that good.

P.S. from a moderator perspective I edited your post to remove your cell #. You'll get a fair bit of spam as bots comb threads for numbers and email addresses. Always good to Private Message stuff like that if possible.

I'd been looking for this for ages and it popped up on my facebook feed, so ordered and should be with me this week.

I do use monopods a bit, with a ball head so i can keep it level at arbitrary angles but the up and down is going to be really interesting to see - i really hope it works as i imagine!

Now just need a big ball inflatable wheel on the bottom to move it around :)

cheers

And then the air monopod like a windsurfing mast ontop of it :)

Can see me lasting about 4 seconds on that before totalling it, complete with loaded camera.

Think some kind of pneumatic ball under the pod would be cool. Must be possible right? Inflated so it can absorb bumps. Or even have a simple suspension on it. Sounds like a kickstarter waiting to happen...

cheers

Thank you Phil for the kind words and also removing the number. The entire project came about with Jarred to find a way to shoot several cameras in small spaces. While shooting Justified I couldn't fit in dollies so I went to monopods. But the monopods weren't adjustable on the fly. Jarred and I worked on it together and came up with the Steadicam Air. Tiffen reps it but we also sell it out of our store at mc4.la Wait on the head because new things are on the way shortly that will help solve the pan tilt issue. I've been shooting Helium at approx 25 lb. It floats if you keep your foot on the pedal. We use three of them on the show SWAT and the operators love them. The set ups are quicker and we can get cameras, especially Red Cameras, into small spaces. I think you'll like it. So far the response has been great. More products are coming soon. Our goal is to help cinematographers and photographers create their art with more ease and speed. I hope people learn that it's a good tool but like any tool it has it's purpose. The pods sold out within an hour at B&H and Samys but are now back in stock. I'd love to send you one to get your feedback. Best, Francis

Wow have been waiting for a good monopod for a while... While some systems out there look cool, for each one I tested there were personally too many cons... ended up suffering with the tripod sometimes on one feet.

Glad to see that I did most likely not wait in vain. :)

and Thanks for the heads-up about the head. :)

Hi Francis, am waiting on delivery of mine and have just ordered the RED Mini Quick Release as per Phil. Will I still need this once "the more special head" is released? Thanks

It seems interesting... What about the gas capsule ? Is it necessary to have it replaced after some time ?

Thanks,

Kristin

I've used my Steadicam Air 25 every weekday for 3 years without issue. It still has maintained it's force. All I can tell you is that both Jarred and I researched nearly every gas spring maker and choose the very best in the world. No kidding. We insisted on it. My guess is that with proper use it would last 10-20 years or longer.

I was lucky enough to somehow stumble into getting the Steadicam Air 25, and it is amazing. Even it it only lasted for 3 years, I would be happy to buy a new one -- but it looks indestructible. It takes some practice but It can easily float a rigged camera with very little effort. Also looking forward to the Air 15 for lighter setups. Thank you Jarred and Francis!!!

I picked one up and I love it. As excited as I've been for a tool in a while. Planning on taking a trip overseas with it in a couple of weeks and wondering if there are any concerns in regard to safety or airline regulations.

Hi Francis, are you able to say when the Steadicam Air 15 will be available for purchase?

Can't believe this is the first time somebody's built one of these, my sports and photojournalism friends and I have been talking about the need for this for 15 years. Super exciting! Sign me up!!

Agreed, while it's been forever and a day since I've done long lens field work, I think literally anybody shooting monopod in sports is going to grab one of these. Too versatile to ignore.
