  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

I think MOST will use 10:1 for TV and DVD because Graeme and team's 10:1 Wavelet Compression is sexy as hell, and with a 4K FULL Debayer (5K in EPIC case) the results are stunning. Very few people need to shoot 5:1 much less 2.5:1

That´s me! There is enough Terrabytes in this world already, the biggest miracle that RED ever performed was getting rid of those huge unmanagable amounts of data, reducing the size of a good looking 4K file to a size even managable on a laptop!

I still to this day love RC28 the most, I only use RC36 on rare instances when superstition gets the better of me.

I still am surprised the Alexa modules works out to $7400.
Really!!??

$7400 to SxS?

there is no way that RED storage is expensive....RED storage is great, for a great price...

And Eirik, I agree, I also shoot RC28 nearly all the time, and it does look great...and uses much less space...

No plans for that.
Honestly, the side module is the better and proper way to do it.

Don't want to sound like a whiner, but at least in this aspect it looks like a step back in modularity going from Redone into Epic. At least in the redone the CF card module is "self contained" and cheaper than the Epic, and because of the Epic design having to build the CF card or SSD module with the LCD ports, it is basically sending me the signal to go into the SSD or die.

And in my opinion no matter how you look at it, whether you can easily get the extra cash to move in the new-future-and-better direction Red is heading with the SSD, flushing down the toilet the investment most of us have done in CF cards and Red drives is if not painful, at least a bit disappointing.

And I am getting a little bit tired of the kind of sentences like "even if they give SSD for free, people will complain" Some people here made a lot of valid comments and points, and I don't think there is a need to be condescending.

We can all agree that SSD brings a lot of possibilities, but having more options and easily swappable between them is great, like the Red one used to be. (The discontinuing of the RED drive, oh well, not comments). I dont see this in the new Epic direction. Dont get me wrong, SSD is great, but CF cards can be great too, I have to say I love using them and dumping the footage with my Nexto Drive on many projects without even the need of a laptop on set. But I get it, things change and we'll have to adjust.

At least one good thing I've learned from this post is that at it seems that with the latest 7D upgrade I'll be able to at least recycle my 16GB cards and shoot on the jobs I get offered to shoot with my 7D. What an irony.

I think you might be mixing cameras up here. Deanan is talking about the RED One. I haven't heard anything about RED discontinuing the SSD module. Just get Epic with CF reader on the body and then add SSD module at will to the back. There are plenty of possibilities and you shouldn't have to dump your CF cards down the toilet, they are still a very worthy recording option.

On Epic you can have the Side CF module and the Rear SSD module if you choose. Additionally there's now a media option that's smoothly compatible between Epic and Red One. How is that a step back in modularity?

If that's the case, my apologies, the way I understood it is that you have to choose between the CF card module or the SSD module in the epic.

Very sweet :)

Here's one vote for making the SSD graphics a little more... well subtle.

Seems we should be seeing RED/Epic branding dominate and the storage device less so...

OK, so I can't help myself.

And BTW, thanks for taking care of my Red drive upgrades so promptly. Had a few dropped frames, got in touch, and boom! Taken care of. No Charge. That's good service.

A happy camper,

M

Dear Red team,

Congrats on this new development, it is very promising, and certainly the way to go on Epic. I understand and share some of the concerns of my fellow Redusers.

While I think great this new media option is Red One compatible, I wonder how much use our Red One will still be getting once we, and others have Epics, therefore I don't plan on investing too much in our Red One. I really liked the idea of a 64 GB CF for the Red One. I already have the module, I already have a CF reader, all I need is a high capacity card. And, I can also use them either on an Epic, if I get a CF module (which I probably won't considering the current development) or on a Scarlet.

So please, don't abandon your CF card development. I understand Red Drives are to go the way of the dinosaurs, it's logical, they're big, heavy, prone to failure (although mine have been very reliable).

Can't SSDs and CFs co-exist ?

Cheers,
Damien

Very few people needed to shoot 4K also. 5:1 will be the sweet spot with Epic.

Another vote for smaller module tagging.

Looks like Redmote evolved.

Will these ship in large quantity or is there an expected backorder?

I like how the media sticks out to the back of the camera instead of the side like on the rear module. The user buttons will also come in handy since I wasn't planning on getting a Side Handle right away.

One thing that I just thought about - is the more robust outer SSD shell waterproof (to say 10m depth or the pressure equivalent)? That in itself could add a lot of value to the drives, knowing they were able to withstand a reasonable amount of punishment and keep on ticking.

Any closeup photos you can share, Red Team?

Cheers,

Paul

These new products are nice, but the pricing is a huge, unexpected, and painful hit.

Like many, I had to make a budget for my Epic-X very early on, I never expected current record media to dissappear and be replaced with new far more expensive media (I was a RED-Drive person).

I'm a little scared right now. Too many more surprises like this, and... well.. I dunno...

Sorry for being a downer, but I don't have the huge slush fund you all seem too.

Now I worry what else will change and increase before Epic's release...

Jay

I know this post is not too "pro RED" but I've been on here long enough for people to know how much I love the company, and the camera.. That's why this is so exciting, and frightening.

My only hope at this point is that Jim comes out with some sort of upgrade program, but it's hard to envision a program that would make this affordable. I had a buget of $2000.00 for two RED Drives. That does not even cover the new SSD module now, let alone the drives.

I think you spoke the minds for many of us. We now have to spend a lot more, because Red no longer makes Red Drives. A "Painful Hit" is being polite.

I understand that some of us like or need the RED-Drives because of price and/or capacity. Maybe RED can give them a final call for RED drives.
But it was always clear that RED-Drives and at least in the near future CFs are not fast enough for higher fps. So when you want higher fps you‘ll need EPIC and SSD. Otherwise Scarlet makes more sense. Higher fps cost real money that is what Jim always told us.
I like the Camera SSD module. CF module plus Rear SSD module cost $2000 ($500+$1500). $500 more and you‘ll get the Camera SSD module. Easy choice.
Hopefully we can change our EPIC-X order, pay $2000 extra and get the package with Camera SSD module (without CF module !)
Just my 2 cents.
