  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

What about 5K at 120 FPS and 2K (or is it 2.5K?) at 250FPS?

Frame rates, resolutions and REDcode limits vary much like R1.
ie. REDcode 2.5:1 at 120fps is way faster than even sata can handle.

We don't have the detailed tables of resolutions, frame rates and redcodes finalized yet (if you're thinking about asking :).

Well obviously not at 2.5: 1... I meant at even RC42.

Right now we need the Red Drive (which is EOL) to achieve 120 FPS at 2K
only 100FPS on the 16Gb CF Card.

Most of know better than to ask for detailed specs! ;)

Deanan, I'm confused as to whether you answered my questions or not.

Are these 1.8" SSDs that we're discussing going to be the main media for Epic? Will they support the majority of modes? I just dont want to somehow get a small fortune in them only to discover that 2.5" SSD is what you really want for Epic.

Last I heard, 2.5" SSD will be for OFF LOADING only... not recording. Search seems to be really squirrley lately... but its somewhere in the 5000 post Red Station Thread

Let me ask again, any thoughts given to create an external SSD bay that would be in the shape of a Reddrive and use the same cable port on the Red?

side SSD for scarlet?

side SSD for scarlet?

Epic is much more complicated of a module... it has a monitor board+port, plus user buttons and a record button.
Does this mean that the scarlet SSD side module is $2,500 also?
Being that the Scarlet is based off Epic...can someone clarify?

Would it be possible to add a buffer to the SSD module, thus allowing off-the-shelf media to be used?

That would help a) the frugal user b) the user concerned about media availability c) the user who suddenly finds himself in a tight spot where he needs more media yesterday d) it might help opening the door to the ENG market, as one could simply hand off (and invoice for) a standard SSD disk when the job is done. e) make it possible to hot-swap SSD drives, thus making eternal (well, multi-hour) recordings possible

Alternatively: like with the R1 and non-RED CF cards, maybe it would be possible to record to non-RED SSD disks with limited data rates? Especially in HD mode this would make sense for the above mentioned reason.

Lastly: Isn't it amazing, no: AMAZING, that two freaking hours of 4k footage will fit into one tiny little card?

i got into this thread 30 pages too late it seems....i skimmed it for words from the red team but there is something i need to be sure about

epic/scarlet side ssd module - $2500...yeah i get it

but is the rear ssd module originally announced for $1500 still available?

Thats what I want...I never wanted the side CF module anyway.

Where you able to test at low temperatures?

If so, do you have any idea what the operating temperatures might be?

I hope I am not repeating a question.

Thanks.

No plans for that.
Honestly, the side module is the better and proper way to do it.

The SSD option is brilliant - but there are a lot of Red owners I'm sure who would like a cheaper media options to be retained, even if at lower res/frame rate. And hope legacy Red Drives will still be supported too.

If I understood correctly, Jarred said yes

1.8" SSD sounds like a great idea - Could someone @ Red clearly outline the costs for stage 2 and 3 users ?

I thought I'd post some numbers I went through to get a better idea of the value of the new media options. A lot of people have been have been going on about the price per gigabyte, but what I really care about is the price for the amount of media required for a day of shooting. I've worked this around 250GB as an average high load day which is what I believe a kit should be sent out with to handle.

16GB Cards
17 Cards (no recycling of media) - $4800
5 Cards (recycling of media as you shoot) - $1500

RED Drive
2 Drives (with or without recycling media) - $1800
1 Drive (no recycling media, but no offloading as you shoot) - $900

64GB SSD
4 Drives (no recycling of media) - $3800
3 Drives (recycling of media) - $2850

128 SSD
2 Drives (with or without recycling media) - $3600

256 SSD
2 Drives (with or without recycling) - $6400
1 Drive (no offloading as you shoot) - $3200

Now my preference is to not recycle media during a shoot day and I also think you should be offloading as you shoot. Right now the clear winner is the RED Drive which is what I currently use mostly, but I think the SSD shows itself as being clearly superior to the CF cards for how I like to handle data. However, it doesn't really replace RED Drives in terms of raw value.

Currently I send my kit out with 3x RED Drives (two to shoot on and a spare) plus 4x CF Cards if they need to do something that may require solid state shooting, or often people prefer to go cards for steady cam or handheld due to less weight. That costs me about $3900.

With the SSD option I would look at having the kit consist of either 5 64GB SSD drives or 3 128GB SSD drives, these would cost $4750 and $5400 respectively. But it does give me the benefit of being all solid state and lightning fast download speeds that should speed up onset workflow. Plus, it looks like this is the media I need if I want to get the full value out of my Epic.

In short, I'm welcome our SSD overloads and get ready to say good bye and thanks for the memories to CF cards. I will mourn the loss of RED Drives but I already have a set which will still carry on. Of course, I am now tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to squeeze this into my budget. ~$5000 for media, $1500 for the RED One, $2500 for the Epic, probably want to have 3 RED Stations as I can't just grab a new reader locally so that's $750... this will get interesting.

Probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway...

Is it possible to connect the Epic / Scarlet directly to an external hard drive in order to transfer the footage from the SSD into the external hard drive?

I know you can't record to an off-the-shelf hard drive, but can I dump the footage from the SSD without removing it from the camera body?

SSD looks the goods to me but I add my vote to an intermediate adaptor between the SSD drive and the camera so we can use off-the-shelf drives without the risk of wearing out connectors. Just something with hardy connectors that would be screwed to the drive and left on it.

Sounds like a kludge to get around budget issues. Those are legitimate, but I'd think this would be a good candidate for a 3rd party solution...not Red. Likely there will be many 3rd party work-arounds...

you can always get the cheaper rear ssd module.

its fantastic to get these options, just look at what r1 is now with mx, bomb evf and the ssd module

this is inmho just a taste of the modularity that will come in the future.
in 5-7 years you will probably updated all parts and still its your epic x
