  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some new info...

How much more dynamic range can we expect from the new daughter board BTW? Significant? 1/2 to 1 stop?
I have no idea of the new specs. But, if you measure dynamic range the way Graeme did here http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=90299#post90299
then even in theory, it can be at most 0.6 stops better. That's because a 12-bit linear system cannot have more than 12 stops of total dynamic range.

But I wouldn't worry too much about that because in practice, most people also care about the noise level. As good as the Red is, there's still plenty of room for improvement there. Referring again to the post above, you can see that there are several results shown for DNR depending on how much noise you are willing to put up with:

noise level__DNR (both in f-stops)
**________11.4
1.0________11.1
0.5________9.71
0.25_______9.26
0.1________8.05

Since we are all guessing here, maybe, just maybe the mysterium chip can go beyond 12bit? hehehehehe.

I get the sense that full frame 60fps REDCODE is too far down on the priority list. That seems important to many of us. I know it is for me. That's all I ever bother to post about since I'm very happy with everything else and RED has so much work to do.

I agree with Mr Schmollywood. 2k scaled 60fps is important to me for a number of reasons. Please keep it high on your priority list. Nice work so far !!!

Who knows what magic tricks Red can pull. But I believe if they changed the bit depth that would change all the digital hardware and all the firmware and the software too; not just one daughterboard as they have said. Would seem unlikely; as I said there's still plenty of room for reduced noise within the 12-bit level.

3. We have several new formats to be delivered that you have never seen or heard about... the suspense builds.

Jim

Isn't this all happening a little too fast? Moore's Law, you know.

This feature (at both 24 and 60fps), is important enought to me that I don't mind reiterating this same sentiment.

Thanks.

I am now completely satisfied. I built this camera for myself.

That says a lot! We are all lucky that you are such an enthusiast and have the means to pull it off. So many products are not built this way.

Whenever I meet with engineers of CE companies, I usually ask what they are using at home. e.g. I met with a high end display manufactures (CRTs, at that time), and he told me he does not watch TV, he reads at home. A high end speaker manufacturer once told me has a BOSE radio at home. Neither of them used their own products. To them, it was simply a job and it showed in the performance of their products. They were high end only in price, not performance.

I had always wanted to build a cost-no-object DVD player. Given the lack of resources, I simply donated my time consulting with the CE companies and educating them on how to design better products by simply following published video standards. To this day I am still fighting the chroma bug that I documented over six years ago.

Sorry for the rambling. Glad your dream has been realized!

Is the EVF enabled yet? I saw a picture with gibby sporting it, but I don't know if it was just for show or not. Maybe Brook could post an update on what is working at this point and what has yet to be enabled. I'm not sure with all of these firmware updates, what is actually working now.

Jarred - who is just a wee bit more qualified than I - posted all the current [build 8] features in this thread.

I'm very interested in these new formats. I'm guessing it's something along the lines of 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 recording... potentially with higher frame rates or resolutions as a result... but I'm probably way off base.

Jim:

I get that.

Like many on this board, I'm buying this camera for myself. Sure, I'll fit it into my business plan and it will undoubtedly make me money, but I don't do what I do for the money. I do it because I love it. I still can't believe people pay me to tell stories for them. I love gear. I love making great pictures. I've been waiting for this camera from the day I said no to the Varicam and sent my trusty SRII in to grind the gate for S16. I simply can't wait to get it.

Thanks,

How about 2.4K x 2K for shooting with anamorphic lenses or other anamorphic modes? 3.8K for direct match-up to QWUXGA res spec and some digital projection systems like the SONY SXRD "4K" projector? ...Lots of possibilities here.

Good points... and ideas.

It's funny, if the guys ever run out of ideas, all they have to do is post "we're coming out with some new super secret features" and people will speculate all the ideas that RED ever needs! :)

Sandwich maker?

Yeah, and I bet by the time my number comes up it will make fries too. ...Julienne or pickle cut.

#3 in Jim's list is sure a tease.

Always glad to get the good news, it keeps my "Red" heart pumping.
I really have one wish thought:

2K scaled with 60 fps mode; would that be something:)

Very excited about Build 9. It's been a long road. Congratulations.

Maybe anamorphic lenses are unsqueezed on the monitor.
Let's all pray now.

Congratulations once again to the NUMBER ONE TEAM in the industry!!
Can't wait to have our own RED package. "The best just gets better!" It's very exciting! Thanks Jim and team for the pursuit of perfection!
