  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some new info...

I'm sure this has been around, but I can't seem to figure out what the max. frame rate is in 4k REDCODE RAW?....at least currently.

Thanks,

Jason

I'm very interested in these new formats. I'm guessing it's something along the lines of 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 recording... potentially with higher frame rates or resolutions as a result... but I'm probably way off base.

Brook, what do you mean by 2.35:1 recording? you mean true 2.35:1 and no crop?

I mean cropped in the same way you would do it with 3-perf super 35. Just that the camera wouldn't record all of the extra, unused pixels, thus reducing data rates and possibly increasing horizontal resolution or frame rates.

I'm sure some people would like that. I dunno, I'm not much of a 2.35 guy.

Speculation.

Jim you mention films "Shot on Red" are you planning on trademarking that and putting it at the end of films like Panavision or Avid?

That's because a 12-bit linear system cannot have more than 12 stops of total dynamic range.

In one word: No.

In more than one word: No you could have 128 stops of latitude in a 6 bit system you wouldn't have any accuracy between those stops but you would have 128 linear stops. You could have a 1bit system that had 100 stops of latitude. Either you are on fire, or you are not, but it won't clip until you're on fire. Gasoline would be a good example of a 1bit 100 stop latitude emulsion layer. :D

What Graeme was probably saying was that 12bits is the maximum *useful* bit depth for about 12 stops of color information. That anything past 12 stops simply recorded noise more precisely.

...and possibly increasing horizontal resolution or frame rates.

Hmmm... what if we could use the full 4500 pixel dimensions in a widescreen mode. That would be interesting. Assuming your lens provided sufficient coverage and RED doesn't overlook sensor defects in its QA outisde of the 4k area.

Hey wait a second that just got me to thinking. If the maximum refresh rate of the full pixel array is 60hz ?and we see a framerate increase equivalent log2 of X where 1/X = the percentage of pixels scanned shouldn't we see a little better than 60fps as the maximum possible framerate from 4k on the order of 6 or so FPS? Along these same lines... could you with say a 2.35 4.5k image still extract a good deal more than 60 fps or do CMOS sensor refresh rates depend on lines and columns vs individual site reads... aka... it can read 4096 columns at 60hz?

I don't know if that's possible but that's my prediction. Ultrawide and more framerate options based on our aspect ratio.

P.P.S are those new images on the RED gallery page?

I agree you can map an arbitrary dynamic range into (n) bits, if there is a nonlinearity in your sensor and/or your post-sensor signal path. 8-bit scans of film negative can capture a very large real-world dynamic range due to the very non-linear nature of film. However for the definitions of "linear" that I'm familiar with, 12 bit linear system => 12 stops (at most).

I DARE someone at RED to put on blackface and say "You ain't heard NOTHIN' yet!"

Or maybe, given RED, it should be "You ain't SEEN nothin yet." Blackface optional.

I see you named yourself well "Dorkman"

Blackface? What the hell?!? Figures. The Jazz Singer, and D.W. Griffith can kiss my black ass.

Oddly, your comment is both funny and infuriating.

edit - No, i'm not saying Griffith directed "The Jazz Singer," I'm just thinking back on cinema's racist roots.

ability to overcrank using all of 35mm sensor is vital.

please please make this absolute priority - i'm certain that it is for many of your customers. i don't want to have to keep on using a varicam with pro35 adaptor forever....

2k, 1080p - whatever.

cheers,
david

We are on hold for a few things as I said in the last schedule post. Not going to ship until they are done.

Sorry to ask, but will this delay by any chance allow you to ramp up production faster than initially expected? Say you're waiting on updates for the software or details on the new sensor board. That would allow you to have even more bodies, electronics, sensors and accessories produced by the time you start production up again.

It's propably just wishful thinking, and hopefully I won't be killed for asking :umm:

I think it is currently at 25fps. but I don't have a camera. All but the most recent build says "29.97 and 30.00 fps recording not supported in this release."

Hey Jim,

I don't normally post here (but I do follow on a daily basis) I was just wondering if you were refering to "The game" directed and written by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor?

Jon

I can understand you being totally satsified, but I hope the improvments won't soon stop. I've heard that RED will someday might have a complete intervelometer. That's what I'm waiting for.

I admit my heart rate jumped a bit when I read and re-read post #1 of this thread. RED has a long way to go. There is and will be much competetion with all the trouble RED has stired up.
