  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

Paul, Thank you very much for posting examples from the 32mm.

Thanks for posting Paul. How do you find the 32mm compares to the 25mm? Also, it looks like you have SLR Magic EF adapter... do you notice any difference between that and the cieco7 adapters? And just to double check the ef mount version you bought is the same as the PL mount version, except an adapter is included right? Thanks

I love the 25 but the 32 is a better performer overall - closer focus, slightly less distortion and the flares on the 25 are quite funky but unlike SLR lenses these all match in colour and character. I used both on the show. But it comes down to the focal length, 25 to 32 isn't huge, but it is a difference. I would love to see an 18 or similar at some point.

Yes, the 32 is the PL mount with their adapter. Seems pretty similar to the c7 version and bought together it's cheaper from SLR Magic, so a no brainer really. I have not checked them side by side on the same lens to see how accurate the c7 focus is - something that i will try when i can and also something i'd trust is right with the SLR Magic one.

cheers
Paul

I own their anamorphic lens kit and quite like it, for the price point. I just picked up the hyperprime 3-lens kit from B&H.

Where do I get this 32mm in the US? The SLRMagic website only lists European distributors. Google turns up nothing....

Would also like an 18mm and a 100mm in this kit, if you are listening, Andrew.

32mm PL will be shipping at end of this month, I was just updated a couple days ago

Just ordered the 3 lens kit at cvp.com
Hope that i not have to wait that long :-) Csn't wait to shoot with them

Hi Guys,

just got my 3 Lens Kit. Can't wait to take it to the next jobs. One question, what follow focus system you guys are using when doing single operation?
Because of the 300° throw i think i would need a 2:1 gear ratio. But looks like there are just arri and bright tangerine offering this gearratio. Any others?

cheers
Marcus

Sure, can do, what kind of things are you looking for? I can't post anything from the production yet in this way but i have some other stuff that i could.

thanks
Paul

The stuff with your boy is good... Or anything you have really.

John Brawley talks about the SLR Magic APO Cine Primes:

It looks like I'm going to be shooting my first feature with my personal set of SLR Magic APO's (though as writer/director. I wonder how the DP will feel about being forced to use these relatively unheard of lenses?)

I will add the 32mm, however I'm thinking I may end up relying more on wide angles for this project (which will probably be masked for 'scope). If something wider doesn't appear from Andrew in the next 6-7 months, what do people feel would be a good EF mount wide angle to pair with the APO's? (I do have a cheap Rokinon Cine DS just to play with for when I finally buy the camera bodies)

What about the Sigma 14-24? I'm thinking it could be helpful to have a variable wide to really tune the angle for how much of the set we see the and overall feel of the wide distortion (and on slider moves).

Let him/her play with them and as director if they provide the look that you want, point out why and probably a done deal.

I tried a bunch and felt that the Xeen 16mm was a fairly good match in it's render. I don't know how different that 16 is to the normal rokinons, i sort of remember that there are a couple of versions of the 16 they did.

I had a Sigma 14mm and it was huge! It was okay, not amazing though.

And Darren, i'll put together some of that footage today hopefully, just been really busy

cheers

Hi Guys,

did my first job with the 3 Lens set. It was my first 9:16 job, for InstagramTV... not a big fan of this but hey, it was okay. Here are some scrrengrabs.
Cam was a RED Gemini 5k, shot mostly on the 50mm wide open or 2.8

Was not easy to find some Stills without motion blur because its all handheld. but i really like to work with these lenses. I just need the 32mm :-)

For those of you who are using a set of these with EF adapters, are you keeping an adapter in the camera and just swapping lenses? Or are you keeping an adapter on each lens and swapping the whole assembly?

@Todd S, It's best to have an adaptor for each lens. Since The new aluminum adaptors are only $100, it's not a big investment.

I'm in NYC as well and have a set of the lenses if you want to come by with a camera and see them.

Thanks for the reply and offer, Richard_D.
I'll PM ya and we will set something up.

Somebody posted some concerns about the SLR Magic build and had some photos but the post seems to have gone.

I’ll post some shots of my set once I get home, a set that I’ve had in constant daily use for more than a year. The 50mm I’ve had for a lot longer. The cosmetic scuffs seems worse on those photos than what I recall of mine, but I do have some wear.

Dings in the focus gears are especially worrying as it indicates the lenses are knocking into something, perhaps in they way they’re being stored and carried. Those kinds fo dings screw up a focus motor, and any lens would get those if being poorly handled. Seems to me a sign of poor storage rather than a reflection of poor build.

There’s a story behind that 50mm lens that was being sold “as is” which Andrew asked me not to share. I will say that anytime I’ve had an issue with something with my many lenses from SLR Magic, they’ve been very responsive to dealing with it. (I’ve been using their m4/3 lenses for many years)

The poster also alluded to an issue that I raised with the 25mm earlier in this thread once the focus get’s towards minimum. I believe that this was with the very early copies of this lens and SLR Magic have changed the design and updated the lens for anyone that had the same issue develop.

I was just looking at a set of Leica Summicron - C lenses recently that looked far far worse than the photos from the eBay listing. These lenses are about the same vintage as the SLR Magics. They dind’t have dings in their focus gears, but they had certainly shown similar signs of heavy use. It’s very very normal to expect some wear on any gear in use, but if it’s stored correctly then it won’t affect performance.

Amongst Leica heads the “brassing” and the way it ages is considered a positive trait.

Here’s a not very old digital Leica M about 1/4 the way down this page. Look at the wear.

And of course like getting mud sprayed onto your off road truck....

All this to say that in my personal view with the now three sets of SLR Magic APO Primes that I own, (Yes I purchased two more sets) I’ve not seen issues with the finish being any worse than any other lenses I’ve been using lately.

I do not want to hijack the thread but would be nice from SLR Magic to Redesign their 3 MFT Anamorphot 2x lenses. Focus ring at the end is really bad idea. Also having something wider like 25mm would be nice. So all we need now is Black Magic 4K Pocket Cam with Anamorphic 4:3 frame like GH5.
