  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

I have the 32mm APO and am VERY impressed with it. I have the full set and they all punch above their price point. I'm not able to lens tech/talk out as much as most of the folks here, though I love the way they look and am happy with my purchase. If anyone is in Vegas, I'd be happy to do a side by side test shoot. cheers

How do you I have the 32? Is it a pre-production model?

Did anyone else notice on the Cinegear video posted of the new anamorphic adapter Andrew mentioned that it would work with the APO lenses? That's the first mention I've seen of that, and I'm wondering if it works with all the APO 's or just some.

He also mentioned that it have a more clinical look than his own full anamorphic lenses.

Anyone tried those?

Anyway it's nice to see Andrew working with Fujinon.

The new adaptor will work with all the APO Hyperprimes. He designed it around those lenses and also did a lot of work with Fuji to make sure it would be compatible with their zooms. I don't think it's shipping yet, Cinegear was the first announcement / showing.

I hope they make it single focus. Dual focus lens is unusable in any REAL shooting scenario...

Following up on Jake's question - does anyone know when the 32mm will be available to purchase? I heard May/June but no sign yet.

Saw that post - I've been checking local resellers like B&H and Hot Rod Cameras since the beginning of June and no one has them even for preorder yet and we're a week into July...

They emailed and said my 32 is about to ship

Hey Jake - thanks for the info. Did you order from SLR Magic directly? How did you get in contact? I can't get slrmagic.com to load and slrmagic.info is for EU only...

I am at the Neversea festival in Constanta, Romania with Laszlo Kun. We are using his 50 and 85 Apo's on my Monstro- fabulous.

So it's been a while since i've contributed to the thread but i have a bunch of stuff now. Just been busy

So i've had the 32mm for a little while and been able to use it and the others on an actual real production recently.

Long and short, it's awesome. But then you know what a fan i am of these designs.

Physically it matches the others, same feel, size and general weight. It has a closer minimum focus, around 15 inches and on a wide 32mm that's a fun thing to have. Performance is excellent, like the others and they all match as a look.

We shot with all 4 lengths on a moving train in heat all day, the stills i'm including are the 32mm ones, although i think there's a 50 in there too. We also shot nights as well and i'll follow up with some images from these in a later post.

Shooting on moving train is tough, there's around 4 stops of difference depending on scenery outside (and that's *with* lighting in the carriage) and it was very green anyway most of the time. The frames are just off the R3Ds except for a couple which are closer to a final grade. All frames are in motion so there's probably some motion blur in some - i tried to find fairly static frames to export.

The lens has the same lovely out of focus areas and control over CA. It flares like the others although i would say perhaps a bit more controlled. There are a couple of frames where you can see the effect of a huge amount of backlight and the veil that adds (pretty sure wide open on these shots actually).

I think the 85 is still tops for absolute smoothness but the 32 is such a compelling focal length.

Here are some 32mm from the shoot, these are out of camera

First shows wide open against very bright backdrop.

Just a reaction, but nice fall off

Again, sunlight from the back, pretty intense and wide open with the glare

32mm is fairly wide even in close quarters

These two shots have a grade on it, closer to what we're heading for, there's is an abundance of green foliage outside and so we mitigate that. It's tough to see from a single frame. I ended up writing a whole system in Nuke to reduce the extremes of lighting from the RAW files, so it adjusts the exposure linearly on a frame by frame basis to compress the lighting extremes. Gotta love RAW and Red for allowing me to get away with that!

And a 50 because i do love that length too - you remember your first!

Also to show close focus here's a test shot with my super patient son. This is wide open, T2.1

I have some additional images i will post in the next day or two, performance at night and so on. And of course i can post some other focal lengths as well. The production gave them a really good work out and i'm really happy with the results. Can't fault them.

cheers

That 32mm looks gorgeous.

For God's sake... Currently selling my Sigma cine primes and starting a new Contax collection (for the 4th time!). Really want this now.

Maybe I should just rent them off you down the line :)

Why you selling them?

Just had a bit of a health scare and need to make some changes for the short term - part of which is going to be not carrying as much kit so some smaller lightweight primes required.

The lenses themselves are great but I can't afford to have them gathering dust.

Oh ok. Well these SLR magics should be smaller and lighter than the sigmas....but def not comparable to contax ziess still lens size and weight. Hope you doing better now.

Wow..those frames looks really good. And CA is hella controlled in those backlit situations....can't wait to get my set sometime later this year.

Thanks, i chose ones that showed off difficult shots. On a lot of lenses that would be CA hell, especially on Red.

Firstly awesome to see you getting better, sounds like a total 'mare.

Secondly, yes, you come come across to the APO side :) and sure, let me know

And thirdly i have some contax you might be interested in, i'll drop you a line directly.

Just to add more fuel, here's a Leica R side by side with the APO (both 50s)
