  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

hope you all like screengrabs. Here are some off my last job.
Looks like that my 25mm has a colorshift. Maybe it was a ND filter Problem, i will test it without filters.

Hey Everyone,

How are these lenses still holding up? Read through the whole thread and briefly got to play with these lenses at NAB. I am really impressed with them. My concern is when something goes wrong. I had a few of SLR magic's older stuff and as others noted their website is just awful. It was hard to get any service. So if you don't know their founder directly, how is their customer service? Usually I bring my stuff to Duclos but I don't know if they'd service these.

Sorry i've not been around much over the past few weeks, i will post some moving stuff this weekend like I said i would.

Marcus, great shots and thanks for contributing.

They're really well made. I didn't know anyone there before i got mine so really i feel its the opposite, you get very good customer service. Sure their site could be a bit more 2.0 but the people and service are excellent. I just had to get a rear element swapped on a Xeen - that took around 3 months and multiple suppliers and was difficult to get any details at all - too far from the manufacturer- so that's an example of the opposite.

All the lenses skew to green slightly, i've not really noticed the 25mm doing it more. There was a blog post on lens rentals not too long ago where he empirically compared the coatings and casts from various manufacturers - it's interesting reading and contributes a lot to the look of some lenses. But these days dialing out in post is a no brainer and also i'd say that i much prefer skewing green to magenta.

cheers

Question. Do these lenses come with proper cinema lens push on caps or do I need to buy this separately? In a very early video with Dan Kanes they came with silly stills lens caps.

no push caps. personally I like the silly stills lens caps. push caps fall off too readily. if you add push caps, they may not fit in the handy case cutouts, which I think is another advantage of the kit. it is incredibly light and compact.

I would like to be able to purchase the lens box from SLR Magic separately, if they read this thread. When I buy the 32mm, I'd like a matching case.

So I can add the 18mm and the 100mm, when they make them.:hurray::hurray: Having 2 3-lens boxes would be convenient in its own way. I already own a pair of beastly 6-lens boxes. But I like the idea of mixing and matching these in two cases with a smaller, lighter, more compact footprint.

I'm getting a 4 lens case when I purchase my 4. It's not available (currently) from bigger retailers. But boutique outfits like hotrodcameras (which is where I'm getting it) can accommodate it. When the other 2 (18 and 135) come out i'll just get a case for those 2.

In regards to push on caps. I have push on caps from duclos lenses for my Rokinons which i currently own and they stay snug. Rubber push on caps.

The Leica 95mm ones work wonderfully. There are some smaller or deeper ones. Summicron replacements, kinda ironic...

cheers

Made the plunge and purchased a brand new set from Adorama last week. Took delivery yesterday and needless to say I'm disappointed in the condition (see attached photos). Multiple cosmetic damages on the 25mm and 50mm. Anyone else receive new lenses from SLR Magic in this condition? Prior to my purchase I was assured from Adorama this lens set was brand new and not a customer return or demo set. I was a bit skeptical because they had the kit in stock whereas everywhere else has it available as a special order item only.

Is this typical of SLR Magic given that they are a smaller company with less stringent quality control requirements, or did I receive duds?

Worriesome indeed. I hope this is not the case with mine. Mine are coming straight from SLR magic . I would contact Adorama AND slr magic about this.

I bought a 25mm and 50mm from Adorama about a month ago and was skeptical since other companies didn't have them in stock. But mine didn't have any cosmetic damages (at least not that I'm aware of. Now I better check in detail.) I really hope I didn't get demos. My 25mm is def tinted green. But that seems the case with all of them?
