  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anybody knows where can I download a side by side comparison of the same scene shoot with a Red Dragon and a MX? or even better download the RAW frames? I tried everywhere but can't find anything. that would-be the fist thing I want to watch before even considering the upgrade.

Andrey, no such comparison released yet and RAW frames from Dragon are not possible for you to view yet as it will require a new version of RCX.

Andrey why start a thread with this title ? It looks like you have a test to show.

It has been said a few times before.

I am sure we will see comparative tests at once the camera is finished and released and out of beta.

Until then, they have little value other than sparking senseless screaming and discussions...

Have patience sayeth the Lord...

Nothing is out yet. Only three guys I know of have BETA cams now.

I would say five:
Peter Lyons Collister
Evin Grant
Tom Lowe
Mark Toia
just saw Nan from GL glass testing the rehousing
Sigma 18 - 35mm/1.8 in China (?)

I think it is a safe bet that many more have had beta-cams. Not all post here.
And probably a few more will get to run tests before we see a release.

Dragon has been in the testbed for a while.

Most companies would keep all those tests under strict NDA, for perfectly understandable reasons.

Let's not be greedy and just be happy that some are allowed to post and feed our imagination.

So what would you like to see if there was a side by side comparison.

Just out of curiosity. Hypothetically speaking of course.

I have constructed one device to test it out, but I'd be curious what others are looking for.

...one week and they begin shipping, right? Someone should be able to side by side it soon.

I believe the wording was "Customer upgrades begin first week of September."

The test scene for the SALT lens test would be a pretty good start. I think that covered about everything. Color charts, grey scale charts. Light bulbs.
Different skin tones. The dynamic range in that scene was pretty crazy if I remember correctly. I'm sure that would show the differences between the sensors for sure.
Also it'd be cool to see some side by side whip pans to measure the difference in rolling shutter... and a strobe light test.

Just out of curiosity, I'd be interested in seeing -

Where the Dragon and MX compression ratios match up visually.

If there's a difference in the character of the grain-like noise between sensors.

A basic straight 4K & 5K Dragon to 4k & 5K MX frame size comparison, and the same thing but with the comparitively wider Dragon frames zoomed in in post to match the tighter MX frames.

An over-exposed and an under-exposed scene, both shot at the same stop and with the same perceivable degree of noise and clipping, matched up visually via ISO differences alone. (ie. to see where the Dragon and MX ISO's differ at the same visual extremes).

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

I would greatly suspect that this thing is not done until it is done...

If I had the chance to shoot the Dragon today, while still in beta - I would probably not spend much time on comparative testing, but more on what I can do with it and what works well.

Cheers

Compression tests in a high detail scene like the woods, noise tests (for characteristics and to see difference in noise levels at same ISO), some DR tests (to get a true DR number of above and below as well as overall compared to MX), maybe some color tests once RC4 is released (So we can see how the sensor responds to color compared to MX), an ISO comparison would be nice as well (I just wan't to see if 2000ISO is clean for sure). It would also be cool to do a sun spot test as well to see if the new IROLPF has reduced the red dots and the need for IR filtration up to a certain point.

Phil,

Can you take a Dragon out into the field for a couple days? I can host you guys up north in California, with a couple lens options.
