If I had the chance to shoot the Dragon today, while still in beta - I would probably not spend much time on comparative testing, but more on what I can do with it and what works well.
Totally agree actually. I think when it comes to hardcore tests such as REDCODE compression optimization and color tests it should essentially be off a production ready camera. Which might be something available soon. We just don't know just yet. However, I'm sensing something. My Dragon sense is tingling. I wonder if that's for any particular reason.
Compression tests in a high detail scene like the woods, noise tests (for characteristics and to see difference in noise levels at same ISO), some DR tests (to get a true DR number of above and below as well as overall compared to MX), maybe some color tests once RC4 is released (So we can see how the sensor responds to color compared to MX), an ISO comparison would be nice as well (I just wan't to see if 2000ISO is clean for sure). It would also be cool to do a sun spot test as well to see if the new IROLPF has reduced the red dots and the need for IR filtration up to a certain point.
I'm getting more feedback from a few folks regarding the red dots. It may or may not be improved. That'll be something I'll look out for. Pretty much agree on everything else. Again, might be more "right" off a production model. We might be able to pull off a side by side dynamic range test. I have a stress test that we actually use on feature films for VFX reference dynamic range, contrast, and lighting reference. No biggie.
ISO I'm pretty keen on testing. I've shot up to ISO 2000 and finished out at 4K with Mysterium-X with textured, but good results. Which is freaky, but that's only under certain conditions truthfully. Past that point noise reduction comes into play, as many saw with my low light tests. However, there's stuff I shot at ISO 6400 with my current Epic and you'd be hard pressed to figure out what ISO it was shot at. With potentially clean ISO 2000 on Dragon and the effect of down sampling from 6K for a 4K finish, we might be able to get away some crazy stuff. All of this freaks me out because I remember what pushing 500 ASA a stop looked like. We're far from that already on Mysterium-X.
Can you take a Dragon out into the field for a couple days? I can host you guys up north in California, with a couple lens options.
Cheers Will. Heh. We've got a good chunk of glass here in LA, we did do that coverage test after all. I don't recall ever driving around with that much glass in my truck before. We'll see exactly what happens in the nearish future. Love me some Northern California and there's some great woods up there.
I have a general idea of what I'd put together in terms of demonstration and test footage coming off the 6K beast. Practical content with a test-like feel. Spent a good chunk of last week looking at my list of exotic and bizarre locations. I like me some weird spots out here in California. A bit jealous of Tom out there splashing around with those elephants. That footage is going to be gorgeous and majestic.
I'm really curious about what we can do from the capture and post perspective. I'm a tinkerer. The extra meat (dynamic range) and bone (resolution) well seasons (new color) appeals to my curiosity. Dragon's going to be the camera I use for the next 3-5 years, maybe longer. The more I and we understand what it's potential and strengths are the better.
We'll see what the near future holds.
