  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SICK of all the [FS:] thread noise. Totally fixable.

Just exclude the for sale section from the new posts search... Problem solved. They do make the new posts feature much less useful.

The problem with this is that it will exclude the marketplace from *all* searches, not just new posts. Vanilla functionality is that you can include a forum in searches, or exclude it entirely. Which, is silly I know.

Unfortunately, the plugin posted in the first post will not work for our version of vbulletin.

But, I do agree with the sentiment here, and will see what kind of solution I can figure out to alleviate this concern.

(edit: for starters, the prefixes don't need to be bold... so that should help at least make it not so dominating compared to other threads in the list in the meantime :) )

Just thought of something. Give FS posts a use-by date. That is, a new FS post stays active on the "New Posts" page for x number of days before it is relegated to an archive file that keeps it active for anyone wanting to just check that from time to time.

That solves the problem of too many bumps and still allows see-it want-it shoppers to see the sale item and another solution for those seeking specific items for sale.

So I guess my suggestion would require human intervention to move FS posts more than x number of days old to an archive file?

Most likely. But, I don't think it would help address the concern of marketplace threads dominating the new posts search. There is a seven day bump rule in place for the marketplace. (Perhaps it is not enforced well? And, if not, maybe we need a dedicated marketplace section mod to help keep the place tidy).

There are over 1300 people viewing the marketplace right now. On the one hand, that means a lot of threads showing up in new posts. On the other, it's a lot of people that would no longer be able to search within the marketplace forums.

I'm fine either way as a short-term solution (leave-as-is, or temporarily remove marketplace from all searches). Just let me know if there is consensus. And, I will prioritize finding a more elegant solution some time in the next couple of weeks.

For the sake of putting together buyers and sellers, I say leave it like it is until a better solution is found. It would really help though if the FS posts were at least a different color.

But not Red... that should be reserved for RECON posts.

That's pretty impressive!

Well, there wasn't really much to it, so I just went ahead and removed the marketplace forums specifically from "new posts" search for logged in users. But, you can still search within the marketplace.

So, let's see how that sits with everyone, and I will still look for a way that can possibly offer simple opt-in/opt-out functionality for seeing marketplace threads in the new posts search in the future.

EDIT: small bug with it at the moment... I've noticed that it properly excludes the marketplace sub-forums when you click new posts, *except* if you click new posts while you are already viewing a search list (i.e. "new posts", or a manual search you have just done, etc). In this case, it fails to exclude marketplace posts from "new posts". Maybe we can call it a feature... If you still want to see marketplace results returned in new posts, just click "new posts" twice :)

Very nice improvement Jason!

As far as the "bug", that may be just what is needed to satisfy people that want both options...

For now, I love the change - makes the site feel more professional and readable!

Someday, I would propose adding a tab next to "New Posts" titled "New Marketplace".

Sweet! The double click works.

It really helps when you change the FS to normal from bold. But some threads (this one included) don't think to choose bold when started. It's easy to include them in with the FS threads.

Is it possible to change the FS to a different color? Like green to denote the color U.S. currency used to be? '-)

EDIT: Just realized that once you've clicked on a thread, it automatically resets as normal instead of bold. Never paid much attention to this before.

Also, I second Brian's suggestion for a "New Marketplace posts" button.

Bump!

Just bumping this thread to keep it at or near the top of New Posts. Everyone should read this.

Jason, maybe you should start a thread with the fix in the title?

Thanks Jason... That was a nice and fast solution... Altho it might be a bug with the post showing when we already have a search result loaded we got in the end exactly what was needed :-)

Yay Jason! I love it. I don't think it'll slow down any sales either. Thank you!

Thank you Mr. Ramsey, I think this change will do a lot to help with the tone of the boards overall...the first page of New Posts used to be filled with threads selling gear and the current troll/flamebait threads on this form. Unless something was "hot" it fell deep into the general churn.

I think having more informational and general discussion threads stay visible on the 1st page will definitely help expand discussions onto broader and more generally useful topics for all users.

Thank you!

It's so wonderful I'm almost giddy. The idea of a "New Marketplace" button sounds great if it's possible to implement.
