  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

shut up and shoot that Scarlet

Some Scarlet-X point-and-shoot tourist-style stuff.

5K hand-held, available light.

Leica 135mm Tele-Elmar M, with polarizer.

Colours tweaked in Redcine-X for the most part, so no windowed/localized adjustments.

I was mostly going for variations on a 'normal' look with these, inspired by memories of things I used to see when shooting with disposable film camera's.

Liked the results, thought others might as well.

Just got my first extension tube. Love macro photography / video. It needs to warmup outside, so I don't have to keep shooting my sink. haha

Nice picture Adam, even if a bit, umm, excuse me...:puke:...aesthetically challenging in some of the details.

Have you actually tried getting some icy/wet/winter macro shots while you can, rather than just waiting to shoot the usual fair-weather stuff? I've seen some macro shots of snow-flakes for example that were fascinating. No chance of getting those sorts of shots here where I live.

And no joke, just by coincidence I got a macro adapter myself just a couple of weeks ago. Did some quick test shots too (books on table in available daylight) -

Not very interesting I know, but still, I can see how easy it would be to spend a lot of time exploring that macro-world.

Yeah, good point. I will try and get some snow flakes. :P Macro is a whole other world imo. I like your book shots.

I looked ridiculous with a flashlight in one hand, and trying to get the camera in position. haha

Thanks.

I was wondering how you lit that. Was it a Tungsten or LED flashlight? It looks alright in any case.

Of course, it does mean you can do freezing cold exterior macro shots at night too, right? You know, just to add to the degree of difficulty.

Although, seriously, when going macro and framing tight, that would effectively give you 24hrs of 'daylight' to work with...

Christiopher, nice shots.

Do you use OLPFs with the Scarlet Dragon?

Thanks Scott. It was the Leica-M 135mm Tele-Elmar again, using a 'Novoflex LEM/VIS II' adapter. That lens has a minimum focus distance of about 5ft, which the adapter pretty much halved. So it wasn't giving a huge macro effect as much as just allowing the tele lens to get closer to the subject, if you know what I mean.

Thanks Justin. Love the light and low-con pastel kind of grade you're using there...

Edit -

Thought I'd add some more macro shots from when I was having a look at some things the other day.

Scarlet-D, STH-OLPF, Leica 24mm Elmar-M, fluorescent light.

First shot is just auto-white-balanced in camera, second is the same thing after being adjusted a bit in Redcine-X (and tweaked in Irfanview for the stills).

Some of my favourite kinds of colours, and a nice example of the different coloured CA on either side of the focus point.

Nice amount of detail I thought, without even using the macro adapter to it's fullest possible magnification. I like too the way the knife here looks like it could be made out of some kind of precious metal.

Again, the colours.

No big deal or real surprise, but I liked the way the camera handled the flourescent lighting. Was also nice to see the dreaded purple vignetting this lens usually shows is greatly diminished when shooting macro.

Anyway...

Wow, really cool Macro shots! I have been going back to some of my old footage, and applying DragonColor2 and using RedLogFilm instead of RG4. Really liking the results!

Both of your shots could be confused as originally shot on a dslr. They look amazing. DMSC delivers as always, except on these pictures emphasis on the 'S'.

I'm starting to think now about just dumping my dslr(5d2) for good. Only time will tell I guess but for now I am part of the 'Soon(tm)' for the DMSC.

thanks for sharing.

Dumping my 5DM3, thats a thought i have every time i look at footage from my Scarlet.
Keeping the 5DM3, thats a thought every time i use my Scarlet in handheld/run-a-round mode.

Weight, size, power-usage, memory-usage aaaaand auto-focus.
Scarlet on Lemo-strap is something totally different than a 5DM3 on a Blackrapid. ;)

Actually that are the reasons why i bought a DSLR after Scarlet.

Can't wait to see what Weapon brings.

Yes, it's the Scarlet Dragon. Two city shots are frame extracted from 24p 5K, and the ice shot is 6K 2:1 compression. (All STH OLPF)

There are times where I think about "should I have spent $18,000 on the Scarlet Dragon, or just have gotten a A7s, and rig that up?"

You can't exactly take the Scarlet with you everywhere, like you could with a DSLR. I use RED Brick, and AC7 monitor, so the size and weight can be barring at times. However, I came from a RED One MX, and I would have never been able to take that bazooka to Chicago, so it's definitely more portable than the RED One.

I am looking forward to what the Weapon is, but I have a feeling it's going to be another 10K jump, and I can't put that kind of money down again. :/

Thanks Adam. Your pics look good to me.

I think of the RG2/3/4 RedGamma's as being like presets that can give me convenient shortcuts to a certain kind of look, while still allowing a range of finalizing adjustments to be made once there. Whereas RedLogFilm provides more of a neutral palette that gives more options overall, while also resulting in just going the long way around if I'm only going to end up with something like what the RedGamma's would have given me anyway. So, yeah, I think it just depends what you've got to work with in the original image, where you want to take it, and how you want to get there.

Thanks too Kalulo. The way I see it, when it comes down to the final results alone (the pictures themselves), for most purposes the RED DSMC system is a valid and viable alternative to the DSLR options. Not saying shooting DSMC and DSLR is or will ever be exactly the same, but imo, it's just a choice now people can make for themselves about which means they use to get to (pretty much) the same end. Of course too there are different sensors with different characteristics and image-processing methods involved (and so different 'tastes' preferred), but I think at this point, the main differences between the systems are just the different physical characteristics of the camera's, and the different workflows required to get those final results. Which of course means, in the real world, most people will still use a DSLR for stills most of the time, but that doesn't change what the RED DSMC camera's are also actually capable of.

Edit - Added some more pics, same lens and lighting as before.

I really like how sharp the 24mm Elmar-M is, while still rolling so smoothly out of focus. Love seeing colours merging into over and under exposure too, which I think the Dragon sensor does well.

Not sure if I introduced the banding by pushing the saturation and contrast too far, or if it's just an 8-bit viewing thing that can't be avoided, might have to look into that.
