  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shut up and shoot that RED (NSFW)

So the tool doesn't have the same focus it used to have for me.
Now it is more about what we can do together.

And i don't care if there will be a better cam "tomorrow" because this is what I have "now".

I guess THAT was the original purpose of this thread...

That I think dissatisfaction can be a very negative, distractive and devaluating emotion in itself. Rightfull or not. It just eats time, life, happyness and creativity. The drive for better gear, is just that, not a reason to be unsatisfied with what you have.

I think anyone with a tool that can deliver something like an Epic or Scarlet should be gratefull. I remeber dreaming of PD 150, PD570, HVX200, Varicam and eventually RED, but the only thing that actually made me better at anything, was using those tools I have and try to master them, not the dream of what I have not...

Coudn't write those thought in a better way.

+1

B.

Ok.

Still thinking about this.

The sound of silence compared to the pagehits is... Amusing :-)
Guess that is a good argument for a new thread!

I'll give you a couple of oldies from a project which is about to finnish...

Problem is...
This is a tech forum with a lot of great artists on it...

And I would like to discuss with those... Hahahahaha

Anyhow.

Still in the box

Come to think of it... I think the last one I used was broken too...

Who would have thought a price change would affect image quality sooooo drastically? Time to find a new camera....

Hahahahahaha

There you go DC!
The cams become totally unuseable after a move like this!

I think you should use that image as an argument for a full Epic-M refund, no matter what cam you have...

merci.

Not many threads these days are allowed to call themselves exciting to read. This one is. (As a matter of fact - a lot of yours are. ;) )
Your pictures are inspiring and also just plain wonderful to look at and dream with.

Thank you so much for sharing. Makes me want to grab my camera and go at it each time I open it up. This weekend is some spare time finally! ;)

And one more thing: do you mind sharing the setup for your "footwork" with us? Handheld/Monopod? Lenses? Carry Strap? Bag?
Or did I skip something on here?

takk!

Thanks Patrick!

I am a simple man.

Body, sidehandle, redvolts, lcd, lenses (for stills).
Lately playing with canon optics.
Not really comfy with that yet, but working on it. Still have a bigger love for crappy old filmglass and high-end filmglass. Sharpness isn't all in my book.
But kinda gettin' the hang on stills optics lately.
Just not real friends yet.

For film setup, it is the normal "beast" depending on production.

Usually just handheld. I walk around with the cam a lot and I am not really a bodybuilder. The slimmer the better.

I am a huge fan of "using what I have instead of what I have not"

Which means.
Natural lights are welcome
So are 12k hmi's

It is kinda "all good", i try just to use whatever is there for me and try to not be limited by conditions, rather try to adapt to conditions.

THAT does not mean I am opposed to huge rigs. Rather the oposite.
But if I don't have the infrastructure, I try to not sit down and do nothing.

And I am a bit lazy...

Often I just use Preview to finnish stills...

I am not huge on retouch.
Worked with compositing for a couple of years, and found it boring and tedious. So I try to shoot for a finnished image instead.

Mind you...

This is how I work myself, not advices I give neccesarily as a consuktant or workflow manager on large scale productions with set technical goals...

Just how I enjoy to work myself...

If I have Masters and HMI's I'll use them.

If I have a crappy 40's zoom I'll use that.

The images will not look the same, for sure. But then again, I have no set definition of "perfection" besides being happy with what I do...

Frank Zappa (whom I am a fan of, alongside Becket, Havel, Chaplin, Kubrick and others) ... Anyhow...

In 1981, he released a (totally unusable, when we look at the tech available back then) album called "Shut up and play yer guitar". Really a bunch of albums.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_Up_'n_Play_Yer_Guitar

I heard somewhere that it was a slight response to some comments about his capacity as a musician....

I kinda like that attitude...

"Shut up and shoot that cam"

Maybe that could be the name of this thread...

Thanks Gunleik! Do you have any carry strap like the one from VF? or something even simpler?

Well, whatever you have in mind for the future, I can't wait to see it. In the meantime, please keep showing off. :-)

I had no idea you did a camera test. But I'm glad you ruffled some feathers, though.

@ Pat

Updated my last answer a bit...

But nope.

Usually I even drop the handle (not the sidehandle) and carry the cam in the monitor arm.
When on my own, that is.

Ouch.

I realise that it shouldn't be possible to work the way I do with what I have.

Hahahahaha

I have made a living out of "understanding how digital cameras, signalchains and workflows" work for a few years.
And that knowledge has opened a lot of doors, that I am reluctant to close, because I have learned to know so many great people around the globe through that knowledge.
So I am not really closing that. Still am happy to travel, test and advice.

Just not fulltime... As the reason I aquired that knowledge, was to use it myself...

So I try to...

And now, my focus is more on photographic, directing and artistic concepts.
I don't feel like I have so much more to prove for myself as to technical capacity, after the last few years of work... Not that I am "perfect". Just "good enough".

Kinda applying what I have learned over the last 10 years and try to focus more on practical use of it, rather than technical analysis of "what happens if"

I guess a lot of the tech stuff was driven by dissatisafction with digital imaging tools. I came from a music background, where things had settled on 32bit float and the rest was signalchain and competence...

So I was surprised at first with the sketchy state of digital images.

But now,
Time to move on.

The tech is in my opinion going to develop a couple of quantum leaps more, but still, I think the current state is "good enough" to focus more on use than workarounds.

So I try to...

Ok...

Kinda made up my mind.

Will continue to post to this thread, but I really would appreachiate and encourage the discussion of photography and photographics ideas, concepts and realisation in this thread.

I will try to answer tech questions as well as I can, and I do not mind others posting images in here...

If Martin could rename the thread to "shut up and shoot that RED", I would appreachiate it.

And of course this is a promtional move.
If you wanna work with me, please just ask! :-)

Cheers

G

Thanks Patrick, that'd be lovely!
