  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shut up and shoot that RED (NSFW)

Last couple of shots(from #185) are not with canon glass.
I like the textures in the old film glass a lot more, generally. Richer ad smoother (not neccesarily sharper...)

Dunno why I spend so much time on stills right now, really, but I guess there's a couple of reasons.
The nude thing, is something I've liked to work on for a while, but just haven't really dared.
And that has developed into something where I actually have a few set goals.

But the other stuff...
I guess it is kind a practical. Quickly being able to work on framing and image concepts, that I can use in moving images later on...
That's what I am thinking, at least.

And it's fun
And the turnaround is refreshing (starting another film-project today. Won't be finished tomorrow)

Thanks Phil!

Thinking a lot these days, and fiddling with some shoots I've done the last year, is a good way to make things fall into places.
Pretty much a learningprocess.
And I am kinda unsure why I put all the stuff out that I do.

I find different reasons as I go.

Hahahaha

Trying to get in dialogue with other shooters on concepts, ideas and how they work is one reason, methinks.
Tomorrow I'll assist at a fashion stills shoot. Just to learn from a photographer I think does very good work.

I guess I am in a comcious state of transition, on many levels.

Hahahaha

Philosophical again.

Shut up and shoot/post that RED!

The whole session was shot at 6000 ISO...

Still I find I have to add some grain, but that - I guess - is because i prefer "real" gritty, to somewhat reduced noise...

I find that adding grain usually makes for a more unilateral/even looking image, which tends to look nicer.

That being said, 6000ISO works for stills but in motion it tends to cause the image to dance way too much in my opinion (even when downscaled to 1080p). That said, Toia's recent 4000ISO monochrome stuff looks to have little-to-no grain, which is kind of what I'm expecting from Dragon (even though it's rated at 2000ISO).

Gunleik is this all for your L&L project?

I find your work takes me back to pushed triX from the 70s. I am quite fond of this aesthetic. Back then we had no where else to go to shoot in low light situations. I am very curious to see how it would translate to motion.

Hm...

I saw a short that was shot in 2k on a R1 M under tungsten.
Underexposed a stop more or less all the way.

Shot on Cooke s4's

Noisy, but extremely beautiful, because it was shot with that look in mind.

I don't care too much about the analoge comparison, but the 16mm word turned up quite frequently.

These are shot for stills, so I don't really have motion of these.
I will shoot a musicvideo, probably before christmas, where I will underexpose some of the sequences to get noise, though...

And
Nope
Not all is for L'nL, and the cooperation didn't really go to well, so I am a bit at loss as to what to do with that specific project...

Banging my head a bit... :-)

But it will get an outcome...

I will however continue to shoot along the same theme, though probably alone.
And it has been an extremely important learningexperience to me... :-)

I guess what I am trying to say is that noise can be cool if you want it. Even in moving images.

Problem arises when you think that you can get noiseless images under conditions where that is not øikely with the equipment you have.

But THAT is not really the fault of your equipment. That is the fault of your expectations...

BTW... A bit about that last pic...

Shot on an old 18mm Zeiss B speed at 3200 ISO and ran out of rcx with flat settings/redlogfilm, and slightly adjusted in... Eh.... Allmost embarrasing...

Preview

Hahahaha

Still I find I have to add some grain
That's one thing I could never do. Just because I think, "WHY?". But then again, I'm happy to mildly tone down luminance noise and completely get rid of chrominance noise in post (I'm talking about stills). Some people are thick-headed enough to want to completely eliminate noise from high ISO photos. The result is a smooth buy yucky looking image. Blech. BTW there's nothing wrong with using Preview!

You mean that you were limited to b&w? What about Ektapress 400? I know you could get decent results at EI800 with that film. Maybe you could even get usable images from EI1600? Then there was always cine film which usually gives a stop more latitude.
