  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SHOT ON RED Film Festival Submissions Open

Question Brian: Is this going to be a Private Invitation Only Film Festival or Open to the Public?

IF the latter, then people may lose their "World Premier" Status that many Major festivals covet/require.

If its not open to the general public... then it should not affect that status.

Thanks in advance

Anyone can attend as they just have to request tickets. http://shotonredfilmfestival2012.eventbrite.com/#

There are some issues with the submission form - easiest solution is to print, sign, scan and email it to us. Sorry for the extra steps.

Or import it to Photoshop and export out a PDF version.

I finally uploaded a 2K screen of one short. Emailing over the forms today.

+1

I think this would negatively affect me as well, it'd honestly be a bit better if there was some sort of workaround so it could be considered "private invitation only", while still allowing the same registration process. You know, log on to request an invite. It would be disappointing to lose the chance to get in other festivals in the spring because I've already had a domestic premiere.

Follow up question: Does this festival also accept international entries? Would that then make this an International Film Festival? That, too, is a bit of a deterrent, because some festivals prefer International Premiere.

That said, Tim, I guess we could just wait til the next year, because by mid-November all of the major festivals would've happened.

It is definitely International - about a third of the entries thus far are from outside of the US. Registration is open to the general public - if there are concerns about eligibility for other festivals please weigh and confirm those before submitting. When we contact the finalists there will certainly be an option to decline participation/screening.

Final day for the file submissions is next Friday, the 16th. The FTP site is being hammered right now so USB drives are preferable.

FINAL QUESTION(S): Obviously we are all expected to shoot A Camera with our Reds and master in 4K which was (to me anyway!) the major dream behind mastering with a Scarlet (when I bought one!). BUT (considering the editing process!) does every single frame of our entry have to originate R3D or can we use our time lapse JPG/PNGs/RAW FILES as EFX transitions etc., establishing shots? The form is a bit vague (I actually like this but have to ask!) about what will disqualify us? I personally would think it a bit "artistically restrictive" to insist every single frame be original R3D since quite obviously, it is the dominant format required and shooting time lapse or animation with a RED is simply not a very smart or efficient use of this amazing tool... I'm sure no one would like to be disqualified because they threw in some animation or time lapse (and what if it was a just a super imposition over R3D?) so it is good to ask this one in advance of sitting down to edit "some" form of artwork as this situation is with me, LOL! Thanks for doing this! It was a great idea!

Submitted!

I've uploaded two shorts so far. One of them showed up with a message after it was 100% uploaded and the other looked like it changed the name of my title in the middle of the upload. Is there any way to confirm that they were received and are playable? Thanks.

We will check the submission forms and let you know if any of the matching footage is not viewable.

Humm... If there is so much trouble with the FTP uploads, should we upload a private youtube, vimeo or private server MOV?

Is this normal language for festivals? I am no lawyer, but this appears to be assigning all rights to RED in perpetuity.

Not sure if this was answered before, but when do the drives have to be received by and will we get our drives back?

We need to receive the drives by end of business on Friday and we will return them after the festival.

Hah! Just finished overnighting a USB 3.0 drive and two Blu Ray copies. Thought they needed to be there by end of day Thursday. Oh well, the time cushion makes that money well-spent.

EDIT: This may be overkill but I put both an encoded (MPEG2) version and then a Blu-Ray image of the short on the Flash Drive. Also, a copy of my submission form and a MS Word copy of the Presser on the drive plus an R3D image of the female lead that could serve as a poster for the movie. And, a couple of paper copies of the Press kit in the package as well. Did I leave anything out?

Thanks Brian. Do we need to supply a return package with pre-paid shipping?

I assume this means notifications will be pushed back past the 16th? Two different shorts I DP'd are in the race. Honestly, I'm just happy to get that material in front of you guys.
;)

My thinking exactly. I'm hoping the content gets a look. If it's a good story someone will take notice. If not, then it's either not good enough or the right people haven't seen it yet.

Agreed. There are so many festivals and screenings where DVD is the highest resolution that they display in. About a year or so ago, I was talking to a few people about starting a 4K festival or at least an all HD festival. It will be great for all of these high-quality works to be shown in the highest possible resolution.
