Hey Guys,

I'm preparing to output 4k Masters of a couple shorts I DP'd. I want to make sure I output the correct resolution. Is there a listing or table anywhere with the appropriate formats? One is 16x9 and the other is 2.4:1.

I would assume a container of 4096x2160 padded for my given format ratio?

Hi Christopher,

I was in the same boat as you a couple of weeks ago. Here's a list with the appropriate formats:

SMPTE (JPEG 2000)
  • Flat (1998×1080 or 3996×2160), ~1.85:1 aspect ratio
  • Scope (2048×858 or 4096×1716), ~2.39:1 aspect ratio
  • HDTV (1920×1080 or 3840×2160), 16:9 aspect ratio (although not specifically defined in the DCI specification, this resolution is DCI compliant per section 3.2.1.2).
  • Full (2048×1080 or 4096×2160) (Official name by DCI is Full Container)

Hope that helps.

We are looking to announce the finalists in the next couple of days - we received over 350 submissions and some amazing work.

Wow. Impressive number of submissions!

I suggested to a few different people with short films, that I had worked on or assisted in some way over the past few years, that they should submit. I don't know if any of them did.... I hope you guys do this again! Would love to submit something of my own, but I gotta break out of this cycle of corporate and commercial work I'm in and make something first. hehe. :)

I hope the airline will keep my booking

I finished watching the lot last night.. some really impressive work from you guys. I've been doing these film festivals for along time now ( DVXuser etc ) and usually there is a really clear winner every year... but not so here. Pretty incredible guys. Well done.

Agree with Jarred - simply some amazing work done by you guys. Narrowing down to what the finalists were was hard enough. Picking a winner, yikes.

Just an idea for the next one (since so many submissions came in - and this number should only grow in the future) - perhaps some categorization would be nice (aside from the length):

- genre (fiction, documentary, music video, TVC, others)
- budget (large, medium, small, no-budget)
- camera (separate price for Epic / Scarlet)

It's hard to objectively compare high-budget TVC / Fiction shot on cine-optics with full cine-lighting crew shot on Epic in 5K HDRx (including slow-motion), which was finished in a dedicated post facility, with a no-budget doco shot on Scarlet with still glass and available light and minimal crew, finished on a laptop...

Just a thought...

Peter

Edit:

Having said that - I am personally really proud that I was even able to finish a 4K piece worth submitting to this festival. This is the single most important impact RED had on me and the whole industry. The fact that an "underdog" on no-budget can master 4K piece on a laptop that has the chance to compete with the best of the best is simply mindbogling...

Regardless of any price it would be amazing to receive some constructive feedback from Jim and Jarred. But I know thanks to the email overload this is not likely to happen, not with over 300 entries...

Thank You Jim and the whole RED team...

Peter

Can't wait either. Are there any more details on how the festival will play out? Any other events etc. going on in the intermissions, awards ceremony etc.? Just trying to plan my travel accordingly.

Cheers.

As Jarred and Brent testified, we had an amazing group of entries to the inaugural Shot on RED Fim Festival. Over 375 submissions led to a tough judging and resulted in 35 short films chosen - we will screen them all over two days at the Downtown Independent Theater in 4K. Due to the quality and quantity of the short films we have decided to postpone the feature portion of the Festival to early in January, details will be announced soon.

Finalists are now online at http://www.red.com/shot-on-red-film-festival-2012 and registration for the festival can also be found there. We will have the order of screening in the next 24 hours.

Thank you to all who submitted, we will have many ways to showcase the talent of your films in the coming months.

Great news waking up to!
It's 14 degrees over here. Hopefully the LA weather is warmer...

*cheerful mumbling while packing bags*

See you there!
