  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

Nothing, nothing interests more than a S35 sensor. With F3 and AF100 nearby, all the rest is useless to us.

I don't know about useless but definitely "2/3" and "fixed" aren't where things are at right now. But i'm sure Red knows that and more

I suspect (and hope!) you're wrong about the max frame rate for Scarlet 2/3". That would be a step backwards from previously announced specs of 120fps/150fps burst, and other than dates, things don't ever seem to step backwards at Red!
Plus I hope he's wrong about Epic Light's price. That would double Scarlet S35's price.

Here's what I like about the 2/3 Fixed Scarlet, why I want one, and what I hope will not change:

  • The price is within range of individuals like myself to purchase. Having been spoiled shooting with RED ONEs owned by the company I work for, and grading that footage, I can't settle for owning a lesser camera anymore. 12-bit (or better) redcode raw please and thank you!
  • 3K makes for a nice 1080p deliverable, the most I'll need for my personal projects.
  • 2/3" would give ideal DOF for what I want artistically, and technically as a Steadicam operator.
  • The fixed lens is perfectly matched to the sensor size. It's otherwise impossible to get a zoom lens that covers that useful a focal length range on 2/3", and with enough resolution for the pixel density, at anywhere near the price, size, and weight.
  • The total size and weight are ideal for the Steadicam rig, tripod, and other support gear I currently own.
  • 60fps at full resolution would be enough, but I'm sure 120fps could come in handy every once in a while.

S35 Fixed Scarlet 3K ??? Maybe Not

S35 Scarlet 3K interchangeable lenses ??? Who Knows.

I remember reading a while back that a 35mm 3K Scarlet was not a runner; but as we know everything changes... 35mm is really taking hold of the ProSumer market with the F3 and AF100.
Maybe producing a 35mm Scarlet with 3K would blow the competition out of the water.
Also it would create a uniform product across the board, no 2/3 lens's to manufacture and divide the market. All Red Cameras would be full 35mm products. This would be a huge cost saving plus
all cameras could be base around the same sensor technology.

Who Knows !!!!!

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. You still have a market distinction 3K versus 5K with different redcodes and features, frame rates, plus you have a uniformity across the entire product line.

Just my 2 Cents

As to the idea of a S35/3K model, I doubt we'll see an entirely new sensor design this late in the game.

Stephen - my thoughts, pretty much exactly. Well said. As an aside, what Steadicam are you currently using that you will use with Scarlet?

I said the same thing on the other Scarlet S35 thread. We agree here. This *could* lower the price of an S35 camera if it didn't need as many boards, and people would eat it up. :}

The Pilot, which I expect will be fine for the Scarlet and my personal work, with a Zephyr on order for the company and their RED ONEs (stripped down) and EPIC.

I really want the 2/3 Fixed option. They've been talking about a FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm. That would be quite useful, and an S35 equivalent would be quite big, heavy, and expensive. And I don't mean a still lens with that range, but something with limited or no breathing, proper tracking, and is parfocal. Those are all much easier to do when you're covering a smaller sensor.
Oh, and not to mention that the much shallower DOF of an S35 Scarlet would mean I'd have to carry a lot more lighting gear on my personal projects for the DOF I'd want, and hire a really good focus puller if I wanted to shoot Steadicam!

Speaking of which, wireless focus with a REDmote is something I'm very much looking forward to.

I wonder where the "lightness" will come from.

If it's only the slo-mo then I think few "Full Epics" will be sold.

120fps is fun and all, but in my entire career I've shot slo-mo maybe 10 times, maybe less. To me slo-mo is a bit like curved dolly track - one is always surprised by how often curved track ends up staying in the truck, and then one simply stops renting it.

Slo-mo is not why Epic is super-cool to me, nor perhaps to many others. Redcode higher than 42, also, is not so important. Redcode 42 has never broken, ever (in fact none of the Red compressions have - I've never even spotted a problem with 28 - maybe I've been lucky, but...)

If the light is shooting 4K, like Red Mx only with HDRx and in an amazingly light package, again, that's a frighteningly similar feature set, that might make charging extra for Full Epic shooting very hard to justify, and might make us rethink our buying plans.

I love Red and eagerly await Epic, but these are valid concerns, I think.

Thanks for the input on the Steadicam. I have been thinking about moving in this direction and it seems the Scarlet Fixed is ideal for this. The weight issue is a very key characteristic since, as you know well, a heavier camera can push you way up the cost scale for the Steadicam.

Again, you are channeling my own thoughts on the characteristics of the Fixed. Recently I have been shooting with a RED ONE M. It's an indie film and we have a small crew so we are always struggling with the trade-offs of enough light vs. pulling focus at f/1.8. I would love to be shooting with smaller sensor in many of these situations. It would be a nightmare if we were using a Steadicam.

I don't see RED producing a 3K S35 camera with the current MX sensor.
What are they to do to drop the rez to 3K? Half Debayer? Crop the sensor? Line Skip?
Thats not how RED rolls.

I have to echo the requests of many others I've seen as I glance through the posts- Please don't remove the fixed lens option- I don't think you will (you've already engineered that sucker and are too proud of it to eliminate it).

But I'm looking forward to your announcement. I hope you dont sacrifice a further delivery date for new improvements.

Im delighted to hear the end of what I always called "the EPIC Killer" in the Scarlet S35

I think that camera cannabalized EPIC and would be bought by the "good enough" crowd and would make it difficult to push the frame rates of the EPIC-X. BUT now as EPIC - Lite it makes the EPIC-X that more valuable (perception wise) and this is a good thing for those of us investing over $150,000 in future cameras.

THANKS JIM!
This kind of comments are a shame. It is right the opposite what Red had promised in the beginning. Or perhaps what we thought Red actually was.

Even though the Scarlet S35 has just changed to EPIC Light....I am a big Scarlet fan and am excited at what we are brewing for the Scarlet program.
Jim

By mis-spelling it LITE you have already diminshed camera perception wise.

As Jannard wrote it is as of now known as LIGHT. Although your dig
proves a good reason for changing it.

If you have a problem w/ the price/features of Epic X you can

A. Not buy one
B. Figure out the cost difference for how much it would cost to put
film throught the camera at it's max. rate vs. Epic Light max. rate.
The price difference is a relative bargain.

If they call it "Light" I expect a lot of people will misspell it "Lite" both accidentally and intentionally.

Nothing too unusual considering there are nearly 500 instances of "Scarlett" on REDuser.net and Scarletuser.com, and very few of them are about Ms. Johansson.
